A wonderful walk in the woods drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 3, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I played Brewster Ridge the day after the DGPT event last year so the course was in perfect condition when I played. I played from the longest tees which seem to have the best tee pads. The course was absolutely beautiful. Nice benches throughout, beautiful carved fairways through the Vermont woods. Some nice old stone walls throughout. Everything about the course was just wonderful in my experience. The holes are well thought out, challenging and really just gorgeous to play. Some great downhill holes, some really fun wooded holes, and even a few shots that get into more open areas. Not a lot of undergrowth either so you don't end up in nasty rough very often if you mess up.

Cons:

You never really get any views of the mountains around you while playing this course. But you have the other course on site which provides that. There is one spot where the tee for the next hole is much too close to the previous basket, but the course runs on tee times so likely won't be an issue. Hole 18 is kind of a letdown after the rest of the course, but it is a must-birdie hole to finish which keeps it kind of exciting also. It just doesn't have the grandiose feeling that the other holes have.

Other Thoughts:

Amazing place to play golf. Clubhouse on site with tons of discs, drinks, beer, snacks. Friendly people working there. Beautiful views just sitting outside the clubhouse and relaxing. Both courses on site are beautiful and offer completely different experiences.

I highly recommend camping at Smugglers Notch State Park at one of their lean-to's. They are great and it's a nice campground with showers and bathrooms.

Also, Martell's at the Red Fox is an amazing little restaurant just down the road from the course. Totally worth the stop if you are hungry. Make a right out of the parking lot and it's less than 5 minutes down the road.

A beginner in AWE 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

After playing the last 3 months between Center chains(9), Wrightsville beach(2), and White River(1) disc golf courses, i decided to try my skills at the 'pro' level wooded course at Smugglers notch.
I am by no means a 'pro' having started tossing discs in january and learning the game at a local 9 hole high school course for 2 months prior to the last 3-4 months of 18 hole courses. I play from intermediate tees always as it gets me to work on my scramble abilities from errant drives.
This course made me use all of my skills to the max. having developed a servicable forehand recently helped me a great deal and allowed me to shoot a +3 for a first time visit.....

the drive up route 15 is nice and the notch road is always exciting. lots of scenery and just fresh air.
plenty of parking at the pro shop.
pro shop is very well stocked with most any companies disc. staff helped me find a lighter weight fairway driver to help me drive farther. plenty of practice/warm up area close by. think there was a small putter only course near the disc shop(saw on walk back after 18th hole)

the course is very easy to follow. had no problems finding the next tee as there was plenty of markers saying to next tee. abundant seating at each of the four tees per hole. course well was maintained and there was little danger of losing a disc( i lost a few off the fairway, but easily found them for next shot)

tees were gold(pavers) blue(rubber mats) white(crushed rock) red (all natural mostly) and had beautiful signs with distance and tee/hole locations. Again benches/seats at each tee in abundance

beautiful walk overall with little danger of tripping/slipping. plenty of squirrels and chipmunks rustling around. (saw a yearling white tail just off of hole 8 eating quietly in the underbrush)

Cons:

(just information)
there are trails that criss-cross the fairways and you probably will run into hikers and bikers... generally everyone has eyes open and is aware of each other, so just be aware.

Some areas look to have places for being wet, but hey its a ski/hiking area wear good footwear and be safe

Other Thoughts:

took me about 90 minutes to shoot the 18 holes here. longest course i have played on(intermediate tees) i think is 3700'.
The same tees here are 4600'.
10 dollars to play a round is decent, and its 15 dollars for all day both courses. I enjoyed myself very much and hope to play fox run before the GMC in september

i'm 45, a tad out of shape, but was not tired from all the walking and throwing.... trying my first 400' hole (7)was fun

Quintessential wooded course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Literally the best all around course I've ever seen. Well maintained grounds, 4 tees per hole, varied terrain and HARD AS HELL.

I could go on and on about how much this course has to offer, but it's kind of redundant with all the mega high rating reviews here. Instead I'll just echo what has been said before- this is THE example for every other course as to what's possible, and what is proper practice.

Best pro shop I've ever seen in my life. Shockingly nice.

Cons:

Every hole is a variation on a huge tunnel shot. If you don't have your throws dialed, the trees are going to eat you alive.

Tees below expert level are not very well maintained

Baskets are not as nice as I would have thought (But were swapped out for Worlds so this is a moot point I didn't deduct points for)

The walkways between holes are easy to get lost on, so PAY ATTENTION to the map and the little arrows they've placed everywhere. If you miss one you could be walking for a hundred years.

(yes, these are the biggest gripes I could even think of, that's how nice this place is)

Other Thoughts:

The Gold Standard! The Smuggs crew is awesome and I take my hat off to them and their incredible efforts.

Beautiful course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 28, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

There isn't much wrong with this course. It's got tight and open fairways, fields and wooded areas, places to relax and sit, a great pro shop, friendly staff and very clean. It's an all around beautiful course. And with the new improved Fox Run pro course added it makes it even better and more challenging.

Cons:

There are a few wet spots on the course but nothing boots or a little sun doesn't take care of. And it can get hot on the Fox Run side, but that's just me being a red head.

Other Thoughts:

This course deserves to be in the top 10 courses in my opinion. But I also haven't played a lot of the top courses in the country but if the pros and the worlds tour come through here it must mean something!!

This spoiled me for other courses. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is gorgeous. It is well maintained, there are fairway placards at each tee and the course is designed so my wife and children (ages 7, 9 and 12) can play with me (this could go in the cons section but surprisingly the kids didn't fight at all during our last visit). The entire family played from the different tees and had an excellent time. As it had rained the previous night, some of the fairways were muddy but considering the number of streams/creeks that run through the course, we were expecting it and actually enjoyed the extra water traps.

We also enjoyed the "hiking" aspect of the course. It allowed us to get the youngest to realize that "hiking" isn't too bad as long as you're throwing discs.

Cons:

This course ruined me for all of the courses by me. The mountain forest views, the size of the course, playing up and downhill surrounded by trees...pure beauty.

Other Thoughts:

Fantastic time and people associated with this course. You will not be disappointed.

Super fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Where do I even begin??

- Beautiful location, set in the forest with views of Mt. Mansfield

- Super friendly staff, gave me some tips prior to my round

- Challenging, fun, and extremely well maintained

- Really nice pro shop with a snacks, bevs, and a HUGE selection of discs and apparel

- Great patio area to chill in before or after your round

- Bring your own beer! Can't go wrong at Brewster

Cons:

Hard to find any!

I did notice a couple tee boxes that could use a little more stone, but looks like that is being addressed currently.

Other Thoughts:

This course as something for everyone. Four different tee locations on each hole means that even if you are a newb like me you can still compete with experienced friends!

Brewster is a must to check out while in the area!

Pros:

I love how clean and manicured this course is. You can tell the grounds crew put in lots of time and effort to get things right! The course itself is challenging, but well laid out with many opportunities to throw those long, sweet shots. Pathways between holes are also well taken care of, making for an enjoyable experience, even if you're just out for a walk. The pro shop is a great spot to snag any new plastic you could need as well, they have a great selection, and carry lots of other DG related items.

Cons:

No complaints here, love coming to play this course!

Other Thoughts:

I heard rumors of an addition to their Fox Run 9 hole course, can't wait to see what these guys put together!

Pros:

+Amazingly well maintained.
+Mowed weekly.
+Wooded nature of course is beautiful from the fruit blossoms of spring, thru the verdant green of summer and right into the explosive colors of fall.
+Despite the proximity to the thousands of guests of Smugglers Notch Resort the course never feels crowded and wildlife sightings are common.
+Surrounding area provides numerous secondary reasons to visit including; restaurants/bars, breweries, distillery, winery, outdoor recreation, stunning natural beauty of Smugglers Notch.
+Separate tees allow for players of different skill levels or ages to be competitive.
+While course is well established, subtle things change from year to year and even within the season creating new and fun challenges.
+Multiple basket locations also keep things fresh week to week.
+Well stocked and knowledgeably staffed Pro Shop ensure that you will always have the disc or snacks you need for your round.
+A diversity of holes and challenges keep a player on their toes.
+After 18 holes, the option of another 9 awaits across the road on Fox Run Meadows. Its open meadow shots provide a different experience and can be played a little later in the day as fading light makes the wooded Brewster Ridge to dark.
+Finally when it comes to events Brewster Ridge starts off the season with the Brewster Ridge Open in the spring, and sets the bar with the Green Mountain Championship in September. Not to be missed, either as a participant or spectator!
+Best $5 you can spend, a "Must Visit".

Cons:

-In the early spring before the course opens mud can be an issue.
-On occasion I have had to either wait to get the maintenance crews attention while they had hearing protection on and were working on the course or had to skip a hole do to more serious course work.

Other Thoughts:

Don't feel like I can deduct points for my Con's so 5.0 it is!

Meticulously maintained course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 28, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Extremely helpful staff & well stocked pro-shop
- Staff is always making improvements to course
- Large variety of wooded holes; balanced play
- Gold adds significant difficulty over blue
- Red & white tees are perfect for newbies
- Excellent signage; it's easy to navigate
- As much time as we've spent in the woods there has been no sign of poison oak/ivy
- Course never feels unfair
- The new 9-hole course that was installed for the August tournament really emphasized placement and distance; a different feel for sure. Hopefully this will be back in 2014!
- $5 to play is more than fair considering the quality of this course.

Cons:

- Can get extremely muddy during spring (due to being at the base of the mountain)
- Some hikes between holes can be a bit on the longer side
- Original 18 is missing large open holes to really air it out on (however the new 9 really makes up for this!)

These complaints really are negligible though!

Other Thoughts:

Brewster Ridge is my favorite course to play in Vermont. It's not the most difficult (Black Falls is), but playing the golds will significantly heighten the challenge (I average -2 on blue and +8 on gold!). Takes me roughly 60-90 minutes to play through a round with a friend.

world-class destination 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 8, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I've been playing the course since it was redesigned in the spring of 2013, and it's better every time I come up. The maintenance staff are up there laying down woodchips, adding more signs and walkways, improving drainage, and clearing everything from the fairway to the roughs. I wish every course was maintained to this level!

The course layout makes good use of the available terrain with technical woods, open fairway, and up and downhill elevation changes. Most of the holes have multiple lines of approach lending themselves to different playing styles and tactics.

I've had a ton of fun going up with my friends who do not play. The course designer did a great job making the course approachable to all skill-levels. Each hole has three or four tee-boxes. I run across quite a few families playing with kids because of this as well.

The new pro-shop has the best selection of innova, discraft, and prodigy for hundreds of miles.

Brewster is probably the most scenic course I've ever played. Tucked up in smugglers notch, you play through old growth maple glades, around old stone walls, and in sight of the craggy smugglers notch pass.

Cons:

Some walking trails intersect with the course, but that's rarely a problem as the trails do not get heavy traffic.

Some of the holes really make you work for par. Particularly holes 7 and 10.

Other Thoughts:

Disregard the older comments, the course is night and day better than previous years, and like I said, it's being improved on a daily basis. Also, while there is a lot of mud this year, it's hard to blame it on the course; Vermont just came off the rainiest May and June on record.

Cons:

The only con I would say is there was a couple points where the disc golf course Cris-crossed a hiking trail so it took a few seconds to figure out where the next tee was located. Nothing that would change my rating as a 5 star course.

Constantly Improving 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Two full time maintenance staff make sure this course is maintained. Any issue that comes up is addressed quickly. Through two records months of rain in VT, the course has played beautifully despite the rain and looks fantastic currently.

The design is challenging, but accessible due to the 4 tee layout. I play the Gold tees and though there are difficult holes and birdie holes, each has a unique challenge. Uphill shots, downhill shots, variations in the sharpness of right turns and left turns forcing players to control when the disc turns and fades. At 7,000 ft, you need to be able to throw it long to challenge Par on the Gold layout, but there are also many shorter holes where 2 is very possible.

Benches everywhere! 3 picnic tables on the course. Garbage and recycling. New directional signage looks very professional. Beautiful rock cairns are a nice touch.

Cons:

Not many cons at this course. There are a few holes that need tweaking. Hole #7 could use more definition for it's fairway, but changes happen constantly at Brewster and that green is scheduled to be reworked and moved.

Other Thoughts:

A mountain course is rumored to be in the works, and the upcoming B-tier has over $4,000 added cash. Good things in the future for disc golf at Smugglers' Notch Resort!
