Southside

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 21, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Southside is a pleasant, simple 9-hole course. Man, Greenville is getting overrun with a glut of courses.
- Basic, beginner-to-intermediate level course. Outstanding place to introduce people to disc golf. And, with plenty of courses around, it'll be easy to get them hooked.
- In a typical course role-reversal, the four open holes (#1 - 4) were more memorable than the five wooded holes. Interpret that how you will.
- #2 is a fun dogleg left that starts in the open to a blind basket tucked just into the woods. Easy gap in the woods to get your disc close to the basket.
- #3's highlight is the raised wall just beyond, and right, of the basket. It's a cool backdrop. I'd also recommend to add a little challenge to this hole by placing the tee in front of the mound you walk over to get to the existing tee. It'd add just a tad more challenge to an otherwise mundane hole.
- #4 tees off from the top of that same concrete structure. It looks to be the remnants of an old starting gate for bike racing or a ramp for a skate park, perhaps? Raised tee spot will lead to the inevitable want to throw additional discs to park a shot here as well.
- The wooded holes are all perfectly suitable. They just all feel the same. I liked #5 for the slight downhill, multiple lanes fairway the most of these holes.
- The park as a whole seems very nice. The disc golf course is removed from other park activities. And it's part of a larger field for anyone wanting to do some serious field work.

Cons:

Biggest con is going to be the simplistic layout. The four open holes are wide open. There isn't an obstacle between the tee pad and the basket on any of these holes. The wooded holes are also relatively simple.
- Other than a slightly offline tee shot on #7 that took an unfortunate bounce off a tree, every other hole offered me a birdie putt, at worse. This included not so great tee shots on several holes.
- Holes only average 207 feet, so most players can play the course with nothing more than mids. Other than throwing a soft Leopard on #1, it was putters and mids for me the rest of the round.
- The course is lacking a signature, or at least one tougher hole. I'll remind again, this course isn't trying to appeal to those of us who are active on this site.

Other Thoughts:

Southside is a perfectly suitable short course. With longer courses such as Tyger River, Century Park, Golden Grove, and Dolly Cooper in the area, use this course as your ego booster.
- It'd have been nice to see the course have a little more variety in the layout. Rather than all open than all wooded, weave the course in and out of the woods. Grasping at straws, I know.
- If you choose to place this course twice (sadly, some people call that an 18-hole course rather than 2 rounds), #8 has mandos left & right for your first and second (#17) times through, respectively.
- This is a good course for ace runs. I'm not just saying that because I had two near drop-in birdies.
- This doesn't have quite the feel, or history, of Gower or Holmes Park. Give it time, let this course break in, and it'll be a solid member of the Greenville disc golf scene.
