Pros:

On the outskirts of Rock Hill, amid fields and farmland is the SouthTown Wake Park. Then, surrounded by water enthusiasts is the disc golf player. Who's the fish out of water in this picture?
- This is a cool setup here. Two pond/tracks/lakes for water sports - the advanced wake park and the more relaxed aqua park. For water enthusiasts, seems like a great place to spend an afternoon.
- As for the disc golf, it's a simple, pitch-n-putt 9-hole layout that plays around the larger wake park lake. The water really only comes into play on #3, with a slight chance on #1.
- The first three holes are wide open; #4 - 6 are the wooded section, and #7 - 9 are back predominantly in the open.
- This is a short layout. The average hole length is 126 feet, with the longest layout the downhill #7. Three holes are shorter than 100 feet.
- There are some nice layouts here, especially for ace-run purposes. #1 is the most scenic hole. Teeing off just to the left of the water, it's a slight uphill shot allowing players to be aggressive off the tee. #2 is a straight shot, 114 foot with the basket dipping down a hill at the end of the fairway. My shot was dead straight and sailed a couple feet over the basket. A level fairway and it would have found chains.
- #3 is the only nerve-wracking shot with the water coming into play if you sail long. As it is, at only 126 feet, park your tee shot and take the easy birdie 2.
- There's a little bit of elevation here to give the course a little more variety. #1 & 8 are your uphillers. #7 is a decent downhill shot. With some thick rough past the basket, you may be reaching into the mystery box of wildlife as you retrieve a disc.

Cons:

There will be detractors pointing out the course's simplistic nature and concerns about upkeep. This isn't a destination course, but it's suitable for the local scene.
- I think upkeep may become the biggest issue. The rough is tall, as in this was a field and the rough remains field height. If you're playing this course in shorts and flip flops after time in the water, be careful.
- Tee signs are facing the wrong direction on holes #4 & 9. That a simple pickup, dig, and turn them 90 to 180 degrees fix. It's a slight issue on #4 as that's the only hole that's not obvious what direction to be throwing.
- Course could take more advantage of the terrain and/or be a longer layout. The course is in its experimental phase. If it garners enough interest, it could lead to more resources being poured into the layout.
- Lack of awareness. The course had been opened 3 months when I played. Based on comments on the local FB pages (Rock Hill & Charlotte), almost nobody even knows this course exists.

Other Thoughts:

SouthTown Wake has its appeal. It's nice to see they're also embracing disc golf.
- Being a pitch-n-putt course, I enjoyed being able to carry 3 discs and an adult libation throughout my round. Nothing like a lunchtime quick round and drink. The perks of being one's own boss.
- You need to sign a waiver to play. You can do that before arriving on take 3 minutes once you're here. Just don't go directly to the course and start throwing.
- Over time, if the course garners attention, it will be nice if they stock discs. Even if it's only some logo discs, it will be a good step.
- Piggybacking off of that, there will need to be more intentional steps to getting players here. There was a planned grand opening event in April that got cancelled due to Covid. Maybe a monthly singles event - ace race, putting league, safari layout - with drinks and a food truck to bring people here. With some coordination between the park and the local disc golf club, there is potential for this to be a fun disc golf scene.
- I'd like to see the course grow and use more of the land. There could be some fun layouts if the commitment to disc golf (and vice versa) is strengthened over time.
- Check it out for a quick 18. It's not that far from Winthrop and the other Rock Hill courses.
