Woods Golf at a Big Park

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 27, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Currently a niner in the woods located a large municipal park adjacent to a high school that has ballfields, pavilions and playgrounds. The layout is off by itself in a hilly and deeply wooded area that you wouldn't expect as you drive through the park to reach the disc golf parking lot

+ New DGA baskets, level paver tees on the first half (the remainders are framed, but the pavers aren't installed yet as of March 2023). Very good navigation aids from basket to next tee. Some walks from basket to tee use existing hiking trails, but the trails don't appear to cross any fairways.

+ Well-designed holes, taking advantage of natural features like elevation change, rocks and woods. The first hole requires a through across the park road, but then it's uphill, into a narrowing fairway of woods. The nine finishes strong, with #8 being a 280' slightly uphill that gives you a choice of left or right lanes through the treed fairway, up to a basket on a rocky ledge. Hole #9 is a big dogleg left featuring the widest fairway on the course. It's 251' that rises slightly up to the turn, but then drops away toward the basket - so you can really throw for the green

Cons:

- Good signage with large maps showing the intended throwing lines. The one flaw is hole #2, a long downhill where the sign indicates a sharp right dogleg, but the basket is actually only slightly to the right. This "con" is minor, and obviously remedied by multiple plays or by walking forward to spot the basket the first time through

- There are at least four blind teeshots, which felt unusually high for a short niner. Again, very "fixable" with multiple plays, but baggers need to beware

Other Thoughts:

~ Holes vary between straight, left-to-right, and right-to left. A RHFH or controlled BH turnover comes in handy to make birdies on holes 2, 4, 5, 6.

~ All baskets have permanently mounted solar powered lights at their base, for night play

~ One spot to be careful of trail walkers is hole #7: overthrowing the basket could reach the trail, It's a little dangerous because the woods block the view of any approaching walkers

~ Long walk from hole 9 back to the parking lot. If Spellman is expanded to 18, the holes might be reorganized to finish closer to the start

~ Overall, surprisingly challenging for a park nine holer. The rocky, wooded and hilly terrain is typical for CT courses. Spellman is like a smaller version of Veteran's Park in Bridgeport, or Nichols Field in East Haddam

Far Flung Short Walk In The Woods! drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A very clean, fun layout with clear markings and beautiful new hole signs. All baskets are in great shape. Several holes have very nice brick/stone pavers for tee pads. Some minor elevations changes to make it fun but nothing too crazy. Some fun lines that force you to use both FH and BH. Pretty open and forgiving so not easy to lose a disc (until later spring/summer when ferns grow in thick). Short and fast play make it family friendly. Clearly labeled parking and markings make this a breeze to play. Fast rounds - should only probably take the average amateur 30-40 mins for a round of 9.

Cons:

A pretty short course (all par 3s). For now, there are only 9 holes and only reds. A bunch of briars and brush along fairways in spots (but don't throw your disc in there!). It is over too quickly (need 18 holes please)!

Other Thoughts:

They did a very nice job designing and building. Will be great if/when they expand to 18.
