Nice course with pretty short but (for me) challenging par 3s. Not so many trees that you have to thread it for 200 feet but enough that you have to be able to miss them, or at least get lucky.

No real cons except that directions from one basket to the next tee would be nice. I took a couple of walks to tees that weren't where I needed to go! The hole maps can be slightly misleading at times. The map on 3 looked like a dogleg right but when I got to the basket I was shooting at 11! Hole 3 is actually pretty much straightaway.

Technical enough to challenge but you don't need a huge arm to score well.

Spilman Park is easily one of the most enjoyable disc golf courses I've ever played - and I've played courses all around the country. First, the park itself is lovely. It features rolling terrain and a mixture of open space, thick woods, and lightly wooded areas. It's a lightly used park overall so mimimal non-dg traffic. The perfect setting for a course!

The course offers a really fun mix of holes. Lots of well-protected shorter holes with a couple true Par 4's thrown in to keep things interesting. Great Prodigy baskets feature new flags for visibility and wind info. Brand new tee pads with turf-covered platforms eliminated one of the only real concerns about the course.

When the course was first installed, I was a little concerned about the last five holes. After playing a fantastic mix of holes that flow almost perfectly for the first 13 holes, you finish the course with five shorties packed into a pretty small amount of space. All can be birdied, but none are truly "gimmies" - at least not for the average player. Now, I enjoy them for what they are - a fun chance to make up for some earlier struggles!

I think the logical next step for a course that is as enjoyable as this is to introduce a little variety. Multiple pin positions would be easy on most, if not all, of the holes. It would be great to show up and be surprised to find pins in different locations - not necessarily to make the holes more difficult but to simply change the shape of shots required. The good news is that the local parks department is invested in the course and there's a growing population of regular players who can make it happen. Come check out Spilman Park!

A delight to play with a perfect mix of open and wooded.
Two longer holes and many interesting shorter holes.
There are several technical holes, several wide open holes, up hill, down hill.
The times I've been there it has been very well maintained.
The course was updated recently and new turf covered tee boxes installed throughout.
Good atmosphere. There are nearby houses which keep it from being overly isolated yet none of the homes in anyway present a safety issue with the course.

There are a couple spots where different holes can clash but primarily only with an errant throw.
The worst spot may be walking from the 13 basket to the 14 tee as you are backtracking to an extent across part of the previous fairway.
The layout can confuse a bit on a few holes the first time through but on subsequent outings its easy to remember the way.
The Prodigy baskets are not my favorite but that's a minor quibble.

I live an hour away but plan to play this course at least monthly. It's that fun.

Balanced number of open or semi-open and wooded holes.

Long holes 3 & 6 are there to keep advanced players interested. Us newbies are still bogeying the par 3s, but we see hope. Even the potential to improve on the long holes.

Very beautiful property with rolling hills, groves of trees, open and slanted fields, a small creek that is not oppressive, historical landmarks (belonged to a German farming family for centuries).

Easy to get to and away from on your way to/from Shenandoah National Park via Rte 211.

Between May 2021 and November 2021, new baskets have been put in, and several tees have been rehabilitated.

There is a practice basket and large open field (fenced) near the picnic pavilion. If no one has reserved the space, it appears you can use the field and the practice basket together as a practice hole.

Par 3s will feel dumpy after awhile. The best of them (I think) are 1, 4, 5, 10, 11, 13, 14, 17.

For the novice and recreational player, the course can be challenging on several holes. However, it's a fair course IMHO. Even though I managed to lose a disc under fall leaves when driving off no. 17 a few years ago. Just unlucky.

Nice open area to warm-up or practice throwing along with a practice tee.
Pavilion and porta-potty.
Plays well with enough variations in each hole to keep it interesting.
After several rounds, I have noted it is not a heavily played course, so there is seldom a wait to get on the course or a delay by getting stuck behind other players.

Don't play after heavy rains as the lower regions of the course are a soupy, swampy mess.
The basket for #3 requires a little scouting before you tee off, to avoid trying to aim for #11.

The tee boxes have been improved to artificial turf since the previous reviews were posted, however, due to the heavy rains and the course not draining well, some of these tee boxes are muddy.

Perfect use of the land. Course plays along a couple hillsides, giving some nice elevation-change looks. The two 500+ foot par 4s play downhill off the tee to give everyone a chance to watch a drive sail. Fair balance of left to right, right to left, and straight, with most holes featuring a couple good ways to attack it. The rough, where it exists, looks to be pretty fair - give me a bad round there to properly evaluate it, though . . .

Prodigy T-1s are fair catchers - less forgiving than DISCatchers, but far less prone to spitting good putts than Machs - and easy to see. Course map on DGCR is accurate and (mostly) not needed for navigation.

Teepads are rough gravel, which is fine for most of these holes (being that they're overwhelmingly 200-250') but is my second least favorite teeing surface after pavers.

Most of the holes are deuce or die.

The two par 4s (3 and 6) can be played for par with a placement drive, but it's really hard to go for it and try for a three on the gravel teepads.

Took me a second to figure out where 13 was from 12; had to consult the map. Thought 3 was 10's pin (although I figured it out after I drove).

Getting 18 disc golf holes in this small area is no small feat, and the sport needs courses like this as well as bigger bomber or crazy technical courses.

Pretty ideal course for a two-disc challenge or putter-only challenge.

Obviously, there's not a huge scene out here, but let's all give Mountain Run DGC some money to pour concrete on tees 3 and 6.

Enjoyable 18 holes with adequate tee signs and good variety of fairway design incorporating some moderate elevation changes and mix of heavily wooded and some more open space terrain. You will play uphill, downhill, over the valley and through the woods.

Pavillion and Port-a-pottie.

I probably would have rated the course as 3 discs/Good, but the small gravel tees were worse than natural. No multiple tees or basket positions. I had to consult the map to figure out which direction hole 3 plays.

Couple fairways had knee high grass(single man crew was doing some mowing in the park, but said he wasn't mowing the fairways I asked him about). Beware some poison ivy about the course and near some baskets. No running water.

Spilman DGC is a much needed fun little course for the area with basically no other courses within a 25 mile radius. This is the type of course that will get newer players hooked on the game, while still entertaining more advanced players.

For traveling players this is not a destination course, but a decent quick play if traveling along Rt 29.

If you can't spot the bright lime-green baskets, you must be blind.

As of 11/11/16, the tees were filled with rough gravel, which was more hindering than helpful.

This course dominates a small historic (information board near chimney) park, set on a couple small hills, the land between, and a small woods / copses of trees.

With only:
* three (and one of these is ~300' downhiller) holes >250', this is not course about distance.
* a few holes that could be described as tight throughout
The primary challenges are:
* elevation changes
* a primary window to hit, or tree to miss

The design is fine - the available resources were max'd out - it's just a fairly small footprint for a course. Worth a play, but advanced+ players will only face a few difficulties.
