This Course Needs Jesus

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 12, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

St Mark's has a course to really air out some shots on. Some of the fairways can be used for easy field practice... which might be of more use to you than playing the course.

A church 9-hole with signs and distances? That's above and beyond what I'd expect.

The course can really teach you how to use the wind. Playing around all four sides of the church you'll get exposure to each wind direction.

Cons:

There are 3 baskets for 9 holes, and the baskets have only one ring of chains and are just a bit better than a tone pole. Putts slipping through or smacking the center pole and falling back out should be expected once or twice during a round. Along with this, the tee signs have fallen down to the base of the poles and the signs for 4 and 5 are missing. You'll likely want to just follow the Udisc map.

The layout is not good. I won't take away points for the crossing fairways since there probably won't be more than one card playing at a time here. However, hole 6 asks you to walk all the way down the hole (400-ish feet), play the hole to the basket you just came from, then walk back to the same tee area to play 7. The same thing happens on hole 8 although that hole is 100ft shorter, and you'll also walk the entire fairway of 8 to get from 6 to 7.

Playing over and near the parking lot on 2, 3, 4, and 9 makes the course basically unplayable if there's a church event.

There are no obstacles besides some hedges on 8 and several seedling trees on 6.

Other Thoughts:

You can tell that work was put into this course (it was an Eagle Scout project) but limited funding and a lack of care have slowly let this course slip away. I only suggest playing if you are the most serious of course baggers, otherwise using the soccer field that makes up the fairways of 1 and 2 for field practice is probably a better use of time.
