Fun quick course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 17, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a pretty wooded course on most holes, which is nice for this area. I find a lot of the Houston courses tend to favor long, open holes for bombing discs, which if that's your thing, cool, but I like the challenge of tighter fairways and shaping shots.

If you're local to the area, and remember 1776, this course has several holes that remind me of that course. There are some fun tunnel shots, a blind dog leg, and a couple of holes that favor lefty/FH shots.

The flow is pretty good overall with such a small amount of land to work with. One fairway does somewhat overlap another, but most don't, while keeping the walk between holes short. I can play a full 18 holes by myself in about an hour, maybe less if I'm really booking.

I've played here several times, and it's always been very well maintained, and only gotten better since the course was installed. There's some brush in the rough that can give you some challenge, but nothing too rough to go in for.

Cons:

There are two holes, 6, and 7, that I feel are too wooded and don't really provide a realistic shot for a line to the basket. For instance, when I played there last week, I had a great tee shot from 6 that snuck around several of the trees on a line that lead right at the basket, only to catch another tree as it faded back. I couldn't have shaped that shot any better or I would have hit one of the earlier trees. Of every time I've played, I've tried a different line to see if I could get the line right, and this was the best case scenario I've run into so far. Hole 7 is better, I've gotten some good looks for birdie with some shots that snuck through, but from the short tee, you basically just have a wall of trees between you and the basket. You can throw a FH/lefty shot to get around it, but the basket is on the left, so your disc is going to fade away from the basket to get in the clear for a look. It's a shame because with just a little bit of a look through that wall of trees this hole could be really exciting. It's got an elevated basket that already provides a fun challenge for the putt once you get through. It just seems one less tree would make it a doable challenge versus basically a lucky shot to get through.

Other Thoughts:

I really like this course overall, even though I only gave it 3.5 out of 5. If it were closer to me, I'd probably play it every week. I have a pretty busy schedule and don't get a lot of time to play, so playing a short 9 hole course in less than an hour is ideal for me. The wooded nature, even though it's short, is nice to mix challenge with a quick play.

I'm also probably in the minority about not liking the amount of trees on holes 6 and 7. I've heard other people say they really like the challenge of those holes. I love wooded holes personally, I just like them to have at least one line that isn't going to be a lucky shot that can make it to the basket, but to each his own there.

Overall though, if you're looking for a quick play, and you're in the area, I definitely recommend. I wouldn't necessarily travel more than 30 minutes to play it though. There are likely other courses within that distance that will be more rewarding for the drive overall.
