San Diego elevation course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 10, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Lots of elevation changes
- Landscaped fairways
- Challenging layout
- Pro shop sells discs and snacks
- Bathrooms

Cons:

- Pay to play
- Confusing tee pad set up, had a hard time finding the correct tees
- Mostly natural tees
- No tee signs
- Baskets not numbered

Other Thoughts:

Sun Valley is a pay to play 9 hole disc golf course that shares a fairway with both regular golfers and foot golfers. The course landscaped is a hilly mix of mowed grass, wood chips, and trees that line the fairways. The mostly natural tees are marked with white and blue painted bricks. You're supposed to play 9 holes from each color, but they share the same pad sometimes. Not even the pro shop knew whether or not one color was intended to be more difficult than the other. The baskets are typically behind the green of the fairway you are teeing off from.

I thought this was a very fun 9 hole set up despite there not being many obstacles to shoot around. The course uses changes in elevation, mandos, and sand bunkers to add difficulty. There are a few chances to lose your disc over the fences that surround the facility, so be mindful of how you throw. It's not a super challenging course, but neither are the rest of San Diego's courses.

6$ for 9 holes x2 seems a little steep, especially for a 9 hole course that plays twice and shares fairways with golfers/foot golfers. Fortunately, there are options that make it cheaper. Multiple round punch cards are available at the pro shop, those will dip prices down to 2$ per round. I visit family every few years in El Cajon, this is thee pay play I'm most likely to replay the next time I visit.

Fun hills 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 18, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is set on a hilly 9 hole ball golf course. This means that many of the fairways are pretty open and grassy, but the pin placements do a great job of adding some risk at the end of the hole with elevation and foliage around the pin. The sand traps and greens playing OB adds a little more risk/reward with many of the disc golf baskets behind the ball golf greens. The elevation is used well to keep the course interesting, with a nice downhill shot to start the course and more rolling elevation through the rest of the holes.

The grounds are very nicely maintained, with some cool views of surrounding mountains. The discatcher baskets are showing some age, but are in good shape and catch well. A putting basket is in place next to the clubhouse. There is no signage specifically for disc golf, but the score card has a map that's easy to follow and yardage for all the sets of tees.

Cons:

$5 seemed a bit much for the quality of the course, even though you can play twice around the 9 holes. There are some fun shots but nothing spectacular or really a signature hole. Ball golfers play at a much slower pace, so you might end up waiting quite a bit, it took us about an hour to play 9 holes.

The design does a nice job of making things a little tricky around the basket, but there isn't really much early trouble, so the drives on most holes are pretty routine. Ball golf holes (especially on a shorter course like this) don't bend very much, so nearly all the drives here are straight shots.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun alternative to the crowds at Morley, and offers some fun shots. It's open enough that a beginner wouldn't find themselves too punished by errant drives. More experienced players won't be too challenged here, and there isn't a ton of variety needed in shot selection. If you're going to play here, I recommend sticking to less busy times if you don't want to spend a ton of time waiting behind the ball golfers.
