Front 14 of a decent course drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 16, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Holes are well marked and signed. Tees are consistent.

Cons:

-Holes feel same throughout.
-Front 14 was enough for me

Other Thoughts:

Length of holes was ok, and playing the course was fun. It wasn't my favorite location I've ever played, but it was worth a round, and you may like the layout more than I did.

Solid play near the strip 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 9, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

+The setting for this course is very nice. It is in a very large urban park with many activities. There are places to have a picnic, a nice playground, a big pond, ball fields and more.
+The park and disc golf course have been around for awhile and definitely show some wear and tear. At the same time, they both seem to be pretty well maintained. The grass was cut well and the trees are nice.
+Nice Innova baskets. 3 practice baskets as well.
+Big concrete pads.
+Nice signs that give you all that you need to know.
+2 pin positions on most holes.
+Shouldn't lose a disc on this course.
+Good variety of distances. Some shorter holes that are reachable in one toss but overall it's longer for a park style course.
+Brooms and bag holders on many of the tee pads.

Cons:

-Park overall gets a lot of use and that can affect your round. The course is well designed to keep the activities separate but homeless people or others using the grassy areas can get in the way.
-Very little elevation to speak of.
-Most holes are pretty open and not too interesting. I actually got a bit bored in the middle and wanted to opt out early. I played the whole way through but I don't think this course has a ton of replay value.
-Some of the pads have been worn so smooth that they are now slippery. Could they be resurfaced somehow to add grip?
-Probably not enough trees to provide shade on a hot Vegas day.
-The course plays pretty close to some parking lots, park roads, and sidewalks. My buddy skipped a disc into an open car door by accident. Be careful to not hurt anyone.

Other Thoughts:

+This course is the most convenient of the Vegas area courses to play as a traveler. We had a few hours to burn after a R2R2R adventure in the Grand Canyon and this was a good way to get the legs moving. It is easy to find and there is ample parking.
+As a midwesterner, the plants and trees were interesting here. We also saw some birds and small animals that we don't have in our region.
+Overall, this course was solid but unspectacular. The course didn't have too high of a fun factor. I'd probably play here again but not until I had seen some of the other area courses.

classic course is vanilla 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 16, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-24 good discatchers and 3 practice baskets
-great signs on tall posts that are easy to see from a distance
-signs clearly mark pin position and also have bag hooks
-broom holder attached to each post, many brooms now missing
-concrete tees are large but slick
-large course area in a very large park
-a bunch of other park amenities: soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, tennis, bathrooms, a lake, tons of parking
-very easy to play as a traveling player, easy navigation once you find the start of the course (west side of park)

Cons:

-mostly wide open shots on most holes, there are a number of scattered trees but they usually don't force lines
-mostly the same distances, in the 300'-375' range, with a few slightly shorter or longer holes... even with multiple pin positions
-the listed distances looked very questionable, some longer and some shorter
-the pads are plenty long but really slick (and not just from the sandy soil); i preferred the grass
-the course feels repetitive; mostly open with one tree to beat in the fairway or to avoid near the green

Other Thoughts:

Sunset Park has been servicing disc golfers for a long time. In some ways, you can tell but it has held up pretty well. I think its best feature is how easy is to play for the traveling player looking for a disc fix in Vegas. Navigation is simple once you find hole 1. If you're taking a cab or uber, tell them to take the West entrance on Eastern Ave. The course starts next to the first parking lot on the left.

The signs are great. Descriptive pictures showing multiple pin positions with distances are posted on tall posts that are easy to see from a distance. Below the signs are stickers on the post with screws showing the current pin location. The posts also have a cross bar that functions as bag hooks. Finally, there are loops attached that serve as broom holders. Many of the brooms are missing now but it's a cool touch.

The tees are concrete and plenty large but really slick and sometimes uneven near the edges. I preferred using the grass next to the tee. The discatchers are in good condition and easy to spot from the tee.

There are 14 holes on one side of the park and then across the park road are the other 10 holes. The front side is more open, has similar distances, and feels very repetitive. There are a few trees to miss but they don't really force you to throw any particular shots. The exceptions there were my favorites on the front: 3, 12-14. The back 10 has a bit more trees and a little more variety in distance. I liked the cool tree on 23's green and the low ceilings on 16, 17, 22. There's an elevated basket on hole 24, on an extra tall pole.

The course is easy to navigate, easy to play, easy to find your discs, and easy to cut your round short if you're itching to get back to the craps table. Super convenient but the experience is pretty vanilla. Contrary to what the course page says, the park lights do not illuminate the course for night play. That said, I did see some locals setting up for some glow action.

This is not a destination at all but it's easy to grab a round here just to say you did. I wish I'd had more time to check out some other courses around town to see if Vegas has anything better to offer but Sunset Park is close to the strip and right next to the airport. Next time I'll be checking out the Wildhorse property.

A lot of room but busy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 5, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Signs are good and the hangers are great.

There's a lot of space for being in the middle of the city.

The homeless guys can actually be helpful as spotters.

Cons:

Busy. A couple holes we skipped because people were having picnics right in the fairway.

Having to shoot the gap between the basketball courts and baseball diamond was weird and felt unnecessary. There are a enough holes without that section.

For having no elevation changes the distance here will wipe you out.

You're right next to the airport so the plane noise is almost constant.

Other Thoughts:

You're in the desert, dummy. BRING WATER! Hit the 7-11 on the corner on your way in and load up.

I would say the lack of elevation is monotonous, but that's the terrain you've got so I can't really call that a negative. They could maybe get creative with raised baskets or something but what do you want, it's a city park.

Long day of torture in the wind 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 28, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Long (holes and course), incredible signage and bag hangers. No crowd whatsoever on a Monday morning (during a wind storm).

Cons:

Very wide open with bombs and turnovers the call for the day, not much shaping here! Homeless folks abound- not to be prejudice, just not a positive when compared to the gorgeous courses nearby. No elevation and not much variety.

Other Thoughts:

I played here on a "High Wind Advisory " day- 30mph+!! This makes giving an accurate "typical condition" review impossible but I will say that I hear the area is prone to blustery conditions . I played with a fellow stray out-of-towner and we had an absolute blast with only one other player on the course during our 3-1/2 hour, 24 hole torture test! If I were a local this place would get heavy rotation for it's distance improving length.

Navigation like learning craps...it takes awhile but eventually makes sense 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 27, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is easily the most convenient course in Vegas, just blocks from the airport and in the shadow of landing planes. The tees are concrete, the grass is fairly healthy, and there are even a bunch of trees here.

The course makes good use of the obstacles it has to work with: light poles, fences, baseball fields, tennis courts. There are a number of holes that force a turnover shot if you want to have a shot at birdie, and the course doesn't seem to favor righties or lefties.

I like holes 18-24 (across the driveway entrace). They are a bit more wooded and require more accuracy. And the tiny, tiny bit of elevation the course has is found here. Look carefully and you might see it!

I have been surprised at how un-busy this place is.

Cons:

Tee signs are subpar. Navigation isn't bad, but without the map you'll have a tough time. Holes 5-7 loop back on themselves, and the basket straight ahead of hole 5 is actually for hole 7. Then you have a bit of a walk over to the 8th tee.

The design is just okay. I like that the course forces certain shots on different holes, but nearly every hole felt like a pretty easy 3 but an unrealistic 2. I can throw about 275 feet, and it always felt like I ended up 75-150 feet away from the hole off the tee. So for someone of my skill set, a great drive and a mediocre drive will both usually result in a par. There isn't a lot of risk/reward on the course.

People seem to sit in several of the fairways to watch the baseball games.

Other Thoughts:

Update: As of late March 2013, there are new signs for all 24 holes, so navigation is much better. There is still a stray basket between holes 3 and 4 (#4 is the old #8), but you can ignore it.

If you come to Vegas and need a break from the gambling, this is probably your best bet (hah! Get it?). It's close to the Strip, and you could probably even take a cab here.

There is some shade here, but if you're playing in the summer, bring some water, a hat, and a lot of sunscreen. The heat isn't as bad as you think, but the direct sunlight can take a lot out of you.

Beginner's Review 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 18, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good size tee boxes. Nice layout. Well-maintained park. Mature trees for some shade. Friendly locals.

Cons:

Holes 4-7 do not exist. Hole 1 tee, as marked on map is now No. 2 (July 18, 2012). You'll need someone to direct you to first tee if you've never played before. After playing hole 3, move directly to No. 8. The course map is useless for holes 1 and 4-7.

Other Thoughts:

OB on some holes put traffic, parked cars and basketball players in peril from beginners like me. OB can make play more challenging, but can also make for some nervous play from a beginner.

Construction Continues 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 10, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Decent park not far from LV Strip
-Baskets were in decent shape
-Concrete Teepads (except for hole changes)
-Signage available for each hole

Cons:

-Construction in the park has forced hole relocation
- Flat terrain with few obstacles
-Mandatory flight paths on holes due to crossing fairways
-Slight sketchy park

Other Thoughts:

Out of towner visiting LV and chose this park due to it being very close to downtown strip. In fact, if you plan your trips the way I do, You could come out of the airport and land at Sunset park in Less than 3 minutes.
I use the GPS Longitude and Latitude markings for directions which dumps you at Hole #12 instead of the other parking lot at Hole#1.
The Contruction interrupted the flow abit and Hole#1 has been reconstructed. Luckily a local pointed us to the hole.
The Mandatory Flight paths on a number of holes are understood due to the course layout but I see this as a con being flying discs arry can happen often.
We got turned arounda few times so it would help if there were better directions available.
If I return to the area, I would probably try another park. The course itself was a bit uninteresting.

Okay - but in the lower 50% 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 27, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The 14 holes available on the front are all pretty straight forward and open with some OB - mostly other park amenities (Tennis courts, baseball fields) or parking lots. While there are trees on the front, very few really come into play.
The final 6 holes made the course worth playing. They are a bit longer than the front and have a lot more trees that force you to decide how to play the hole.

Cons:

Currently (10/27/11) holes 4-7 are not available due to construction at the park. Holes 1-3 have been moved/modified making it a little tough to play without guidance (which the local players seemed happy to provide).
Not a lot of elevation change - but what little natural elevation changes are available were incorporated into the course (again all on the last 6 holes).

Other Thoughts:

Overall I thought this was a nice course and it is reasonably easy. Of the courses I've played, I would have to rate it in the lower half. Not being a local, it's unlikely I will play the course again; however, if I decide to come back, I will probably just play the final 6 holes.

Other Thoughts:

nice course but some holes play close to parked cars and other sports fields/. We had to get a guy playing a fiddle, a lady reading in the fairway and a couple softball teams to move so we could play/ many signs missing/bums/a bit confusing where you have to go out to the sidewalk and back to get around the construction/no water. Good location for vacations 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 15, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has nice tee pads and baskets. The holes varied in length and difficulty. Decent signage, but many of the signs were vandalized and worn out. Good location close to the strip and very close to the airport. Good use of the few trees in the park. A couple of very challenging holes. Some friendly locals to help with navigation if you need. Drinking fountains and restrooms on site, although I wouldn't recommend using the restrooms.

Cons:

The park is completely flat, no elevation change whatsoever. Some holes played too close to other park activities like baseball, tennis, and basketball. There is a lot of non disc golfers out on the fairways, near the baskets, and by the tee pads. Both times I've played this course there were a lot of bums hanging out, and in some cases, heckling the disc golfers as they tee off.

Other Thoughts:

I had fun both times I played this course, and will visit next time I'm in Vegas. It's not incredible, but it works, and has some nice holes. The course would be much better if it wasn't full of people just hanging out, and getting in the way.

DG in LV! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 14, 2007 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's disc golf in Vegas, and a stones throw from the strip, can't get better than that. Easy to get to, easy to navigate and really friendly locals to help you out.

Cons:

Kind of redundant and not overly difficult. Seemed like there were lot of pretty much wide open holes. This courses' main defense is the wind and it wasn't very windy the day I played it. There were a bunch of other park users and "woodsman" in the park, but it wasn't really an issue for me.

Other Thoughts:

It's worth playing if you in LV or you need a break from the tables. I don't make it a priority when I'm there, but it has to compete against the strip which isn't really fair. It's a good beginner/ intermediate course, but a skilled player will find it average.

good but not great 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 5, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Gives you something else to do if you live there, besides the obvious. I visited on vacation and played this course on a saturday morning at 8:30 and there was a TON of foot traffic. The tee pads were good and the baskets were in good condition, signage lacked a little but it was pretty easy to find my way around. Followed a bum it seemed for about half the holes till he apperently got tired and layed down on a bench to sleep. There was a small car show going on in the park, blocked a few of the holes, but it gave me something to check out going on to other holes which was a nice perk.

Cons:

Plays through all kinds of other park activities play smart and you wont have any problems. Watch out for sleeping bums you may hit one. Also this is a problem i have been running into with courses out of town, with unbelievable terrain around the town why put a course on the flattest, busiest park in the city. The amount of available space around that city someone could do something about getting a course with some ELEVATION and avoiding playing around other activities. I understand you want a lot of foot traffic in a park for more people to play that normally dont, but I have always believed IF YOU BUILD IT THEY WILL COME.

Other Thoughts:

If you have time to go to red rock canyon while you are there DO IT, its 5 bucks that go to the park and it pretty amazing. Oh yeah a course would be awesome out there lack some of the cactus.

Sunset Park - a Winner in Vegas! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 28, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

- Vegas, baby!
- nice placements, did the best they could with what they had to work with. It's a desert, after all -- it's flat -- but some baskets are well hidden behind trees, encircled by trees, or around the corner to provide a good challenge
- park is on the back side of McCarran airport, so it's fun to see the planes landing and taking off including large commercial jets, private planes, and military jets (saw an F-18 taking off, cool!)
- the rest of the park is nice, too, with tennis and basketball courts, a large stocked fishing pond, and a really nice jogging and fitness course. Wander around a bit while you're there, if you have the time

Cons:

- it was very windy on our second day, adding to the challenge especially for our newbie
- it can be very hot. We played two nine-hole rounds instead of 18 at one shot. If it's not midwinter, plan to play early in the morning if you want a full round

Other Thoughts:

- nice to be off of the Strip for a while

Pros:

Nice grassy park with a full 18 including concrete tee pads..

Cons:

Definitely close to baseball diamonds and some major roads, but not really a bad thing. Old ratty tee signs that badly need a face lift. Park is routinely rearranged, which changes this course a lot. Have had 2 discs picked up after long drives and stolen! One guy ran to a car and bailed, another dude (rough lookin fella) picked up my new Memorial Crystal Nuke and hopped on the city bus! Almost yanked him off it....

Other Thoughts:

Site of most big LV tournies including the exquisite Gentlemen's Club Challenge. Great local club! Blazin' hot in July, but lots of food and drink nearby. Bring sunscreen and water in the warmer months!
