Pros:
.
Front nine is a mostly open park-style course. A good introduction to disc golf for parkgoers and picnickers. The back nine is longer, has a few more wooded holes, and a very dramatic closer across a deep valley.
After some wide open starting holes, #4 plays slightly uphill through a grove of trees (and a few picnic tables). #5 is a surprisingly tight alley through thick woods. A good change stuck in the middle of a bunch of open park holes.
#7 features a slightly raised basket up on a rock. #10 is also slightly raised. Very nice touches.
# 13 takes you into the woods for a very legitimate 336', par 3. The first "real" disc golf course hole. The #14 tucks the green to the left, behind a row of towering pines with only about 8' gaps between the trunks. The rows of tall "sentries" continue on #15. Originally 250', the hole was shortened to only 150' - but the straight gaps are very tight, and there are lots of trees to hit. It's open on the left side, just right for a RHFH. That's what I did, and was rewarded with my second lifetime ACE!
#18 is a dramatic closer: tightly wooded on both sides of a deep chasm. It's only 250, and there are clear lines in on both sides of the basket, but first you have to clear a tight gap on the tee side of the valley. After any significant rain, there's gonna be an active stream at the bottom. The climb up the far side is so steep that the pole on my Zuca disconnected while I was dragging it up. A great finishing hole, probably one you anticipate for much of your round.
Cons:
.
Lumpy rubber tees, with #8 being the worst of the bunch. Not only is it hollowed out, but it runs uphill while also slanted to one side.
Simple teesigns that just indicate hole number and length. No navigation signage. Although the flow is pretty intuitive, blind holes are confusing without the help of uDisc.
#17 is a short, pretty much s-shaped hole. It's been allowed to grow in, making it almost impossible to play except to dink and dunk.
Other Thoughts:
.
~ Bathrooms throughout the park, and beautiful views from the bluffs that the park is famous for.
~ Make sure to walk ahead on #6. It's a blind shot, and the basket is far to the right of where the tee is pointing. The arrow under #9 basket points in the wrong direction. The next tee is much farther to the left, along the road.
~ Thacher Park is a legendary local picnic spot. This is an easy scoring course (feast on the short 3's and soft 4's). It's a fun play in one big loop with #18 coming out on a path to the parking lot.
