Course potential yet to be fully realized 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- concrete tees, two per hole
- brand new dd veteran baskets, two per hole
- no fairway overlap
- beautiful birch filled landscape, subtle elevation changes
- quiet relaxing atmosphere
- tons of potential

Cons:

- underwhelming course design, repetitive
- underwhelming amenities in general
- temp tee signs, some missing
- no benches
- baskets aren't labeled
- lacks navigational aids
- $12 fee for a course that needs a lot of refinement
- mosquitos, mosquitos, mosquitos

Other Thoughts:

The Reserve is a technical wooded course that circles a private property used as an event venue. Each hole showcases multiple concrete tees marked short/long with baskets placed in both short (white) and long (blue) positions. Fairways feature numerous limbless white birch trunks, forcing players to shape their shots.

Control is key. The rough is punitive, but unless you really fly off the fairway, I don't think many players will lose discs. I enjoyed the dense birch forest not only for it's beauty, but it helped keep a majority of the elements at bay. Winds seems like less of a factor on this course.

The elephant in the room is that the Reserve needs a lot more work before we can start comparing it to the top courses in the state. For starters, the Reserve only appeals to a very specific player skill set. Even then, too many fairways reward luck over skill. I felt bombarded by fairways that are too tight for realistic turnover throws. Also, Reserve features almost no immenities, yet. Tee signs are temp and numerous signs were missing. Navigational aids were poor at best. Another thing that perplexed me were a bunch of basket placements. Often white and blue baskets are directly in line with each other.

Overall the Reserve has tons of potential, but it's not quite there yet. If it were up to me, I'd want a course that appeals to a broader audience. I'd widen up the fairways, create some realistic throwing lanes, and wait to charge money until the course was actually finished. That's just me. Charging $12 per round is an unreal expectation considering the current state of the course. I liked the course, but too few holes actually excited me.

Pros:

Meier Lake is the newest premier disc golf course in the state of Alaska. Course designer Eric McCabe has put together another great course design and as of July 2020 the course is playable with 18 baskets and at least 1 tee pad per hole. Soon, the course will feature 2 baskets and 2 tee pads per hole.

The course offers a lot of variety as far as shot shape and distance. There is not a lot of openness to this course, instead players will weave through Birch trees and rolling hills will a couple of water hazards to boot.

Brand new DD Veteran baskets and concrete tee pads make for a top notch experience. Greens and tee areas are complimented with rock and lumber in some areas to create some extra beauty and design features.

Overall this course is going to be an absolute beauty. While it is still a bit rough and does need some "beating in", it is very much still very good in its current state which is only getting better by the week. This is a must stop for those vacationing to this part of the state.

Cons:

The course is very tight and still a bit rough around the edges. If you don't like challenging shots and a few guaranteed bad kicks throughout the round, this course may not be your cup of tea. However, as time goes on, things will open up and this course is going to get better with time.

This course is a bit of a drive from just about anywhere so this is more of a day trip destination. Drive time is about an hour from Anchorage.

The rough is a bit rough. Because the course is still in the beating in stage, the rough is a bit thick and discs can be a challenge to find. Again, this will improve over time.

Other Thoughts:

Big thank you to Dynamic Discs and Meier Lake Resort for putting such a fun and enjoyable course together. Alaska will benefit greatly from a course of this caliber and this will quickly become an instant favorite in the state. Can't wait to return in years to come.
