9 holes on church property 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 3, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course looks like it has been here for a year or two. The course is in good condition. It is easy to find the next tee box, they are level, and most had some fine gravel on them. There are no signs, so bring a map. The tees are just indicated by landscape flags, no actual box or pad. Not a real drawback in my opinion. The baskets are in excellent condition. They are installed using 'Great Stuff' expanding foam. I am curious how this will hold up. The course flows nicely from hole to hole.

Cons:

The course seems to be a work in progress. They need some volunteer help grooming the fairways. Picking stuff up, burying old debris, knocking down the weeds from time to time, etc. Possibly improving the tee boxes and installing signs if that is the direction they go.

Other Thoughts:

This is a 9-hole course that was put in to attract new members to the church - utilizing extra land. I think this is great utilization of the land. Of course, I have my own interests in mind! The course is not bad for what it is, 9 holes on old vacant sandhills land.

Hole 1,2,3 form a Z shape in a pine treed field. The trees make it far more interesting than just three holes in a field. Navigating through and around them adds to the holes, but they are nothing special. Hole 3 had high weeds.

Hole 4 is fun. Throw through a gap in the trees, then curve to the right 420 feet. Easy par 4 if you make it through the gap.

Holes 5 and 6 take advantage of the terrain a bit. Seems like if 5 were a little farther back on the property, it would make the two holes much more interesting. It just seems like they could better take advantage of the property and slight hilly-ness available. But I don't know the motivation of the designers/church.

7 Navigate through some pine trees out into an open field, then across a hole in front of the basket. If you land in the hole you are putting up 8 or 10 feet.

8 is a nice hole. It goes along the back of the church, and is mostly open, then curving right into the trees.

The final hole starts right at the corner of the building which is built up, so has a nice downhill curve to the right. Which would be nice except it is entirely over the parking lot. They probably wanted to end near the front, and need to avoid the swampy area that is fenced off, but they have enough land to make a better final hole. Even if you have to walk out back to your car.

On my first round, it took about 35 minutes to play this course. It is relatively simple; flows nicely hole to hole and the tees are easy to find from the last basket. I would say not a destination, but if you live close, worth playing. Or possibly a nice warm up before heading to Village of Pinehurst.
