With Just A Couple Of Basic Upgrades, Tilton Could Become A Decent Little 9 Hole Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 4, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tilton Park is a nice little neighborly park whose main attraction is the children's play area at the top of the hill. The small park has great terrain for disc golf and I don't think this course gets much use. It has nice Discatcher baskets with the yellow rims and numbers. The problem is what it doesn't have which are tee pads or decent signage. I think the basic 9 hole layout is OK. It loops back to the beginning. It gives you a couple nice downhill tosses in #'s 1 & 5. The wooded holes are OK.

This would be a great course to put in the short little 4 x 6 inch poles cut off at an angle. Bury them deep so they only stick out about 12 inches above ground. At the top of this angle cut, attach a 4 x 6 very simple metal tee sign. Just the hole number, par and distance. These are simple, cheap and really tough for the the teenage crowd to destroy.

Next the tee pads. I really like patio block pads for a course like this. They're not permanent so you don't have as many hassles from the parks department. Just build a wooden form, put down a layer of sand and lay your blocks and you have a great tee pad.

Cons:

What was someone thinking when they decided to install laminated tee signs attached to skinny little sticks. Did they consider that someone might possible want to break them off, just for fun? Did they consider that a piece of paper laminated might not hold up to a New England winter? Or that some 14 year old might just tear it down because that's what 14 year olds do? Did they think at all?

Other Thoughts:

If this is a Parks Deparment employee who was in charge of the signage, I would immediately promote her/him to director of road signs for the entire state of New Hampshire. Imagine the money she/he could save the state by making sure that all New Hampshire freeway signs are just laminated paper signs from now on. NH wouldn't have to waste all that money on those expensive metal, reflector ones that you read can at night.

Anyway, back to my course here at Tilton. Follow my two simple, fairly inexpensive suggestions, and I think you'd have a pretty nice little 9 hole disc disc golf course here. Still not as popular as the children's play area, however!

Pros:

Really the only thing this course has going for it is its in a brand new park with new baskets. There is a very nice playground with picnic benches, trash cans, and a clean porta pottie. Since the park is brand new there are nine new discatchers. Both the baskets and post by the tees are numbered. A map is available near the first "tee box". The field holes are mostly mowed. There are some clusters of trees and wooded holes that mix up the monotony of a wide open field.

Cons:

Oh, where to start? First off, the design is terrible. There are a ton of woods available and only four holes are in the woods. There is more than enough land to do eighteen holes but it feels as if nine are jammed in. The course turns over on itself and several times you are walking in the middle of another holes fairway. The stakes that mark the tee box are almost chest high which means I am teeing off several feet back so I don't hit my hand. Hole seven's tee pad is on a steep hill and very uneven. The wooded holes could use some serious clean up. It looks like the course was cut and then forgotten about. The tee signs just have a number. This is bad because from any given tee in the field you can see multiple baskets.
