Prince William County's newest MS course

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 21, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

It's a stretched-out track, so you're not going to be running over one another even if there are a goodly number of people playing at once. However, I'm not sure that's ever the case. The course doesn't seem to be getting alot of "business".

If you like to throw big shots and not have to worry about trees, unforgiving rough, ponds, etc., this is a course for you! Very few holes have a tree to consider, but you do have to take care near fences, over a culvert, mind the storm drains (!!), and share the property with people running on the track or playing on the soccer fields. Getting your disc on or under the bleachers also is distinctly possible.

I think the designer of the course did pretty well with the available land and tried very hard to avoid conflicts, but there are some which are inevitable on a school ground.

I like that there are straight-along fairways mixed in with those that have a little (or alot of) bend in them: nos. 3, 6, 7, and 8.

There are two porta-potties near the teeing area of no. 1. You come by them again at the green of no. 5 and the tee of no. 6.

Cons:

As noted by others on UDisc, the tees are not marked, and there are no hole signs. There are no signs period! It would be nice if there were at least flags to indicate where the tees are.

As is the case in all school yards, the playing fields have storm drains everywhere. Where you see a depression, expect a drain...and aim accordingly to keep your disc from rolling in!

The conflict with other folks is real, especially at holes 8 and 9. I've never played this course where there wasn't someone running around the track and two or more people playing on the primary soccer field (the tee of 9 is in the middle of the far goal). Be prepared to wait and/or create substitute tees of near-equal distance from different angles. I play no. 9 down the track lane from the no. 8 green, fading into the infield in case pavement is OB (no signs, don't know).

Other Thoughts:

The main parking lot is where most people are parked, but the employee parking lot behind the school building is where no. 1 is. Whether or not you are allowed to park there (if not faculty/staff), I don't know. Maybe it's okay after school hours and on weekends? That's a guess. You don't save yourself any walking by parking in the employee lot, and it is rather isolated over there.

Indeed, nos. 1-6 are rather isolated. That's a good thing that not too many non-players are getting in your way, but if you had a problem (hurt yourself, etc.), I'm not sure anyone would hear you.

All in all, I like the little course, hope the baskets that need repair are repaired (I think it is only no. 3 now), and that we get some flags for the tees.

I think it would be a good course to pair with Bull Run Middle School (The Eagle's Claw) or to use as warm-up or cool-down with a longer course somewhat in the vicinity (Hanson, Bull Run Regional, or even Franklin).
