Gnarly Perfect 2+ years

Pros:

Coure #2 at Tombigbee State Park is a very tough course with LOTS of trees and LOTS of elevation change. The player who is new to the game or one that struggles with accuracy will probably have a long day here. There are 6 par 4's, and the 5400'+ feels even longer.

Tees are not perfect, but the carpeted boxes are usually not bad. The baskets are all where they should be. There are signs for most of the holes with distance and a rudimentary map. There are not any breaks, this one is relentless and challenges on one hole after the next.

Really crazy, fun throws that wind through tricky gaps in the trees as you are traversing up and down steep, heavily wooded hillsides. Water is in play near the basket on a couple of holes.

So many great holes, but a little extra teeth on holes 3, 14, 17, and 18. 2 is a really fun downhill alley fading to the left. 3 is across a valley, and over the top of the hill on the other side. 14 crosses two valleys, and there is a steep drop behind the basket as well. 17 is uphill, and has a very sharp dogleg left at the top of the ridge. 18 is down one hill and up the next, with wall of trees on top that protect the front of the grassy run to the basket.

Cons:

I would give this course a 5 rating in the current layout if there were upgrades to concrete tee boxes. Other areas have a bit of room for improvement. The signs were ok but the illustrations could be better. A few places it would be nice to have stairs or stepping stones of some kind. A basket with better visibility might be nice.

I know that many disc golfers may not enjoy this course. Bad rolls, ricochets, knockdowns, and the length are likely to get to you at some point along the way.

Screw it, 5 stars.

Other Thoughts:

I wish I would have had time and energy to play the other course in the park. From what I saw it was largely an easy layout with a couple of holes that looked nice. However, this course was a bad mother, and worth the trip and fee to get in by itself, if you want my opinion.

I did manage to get birdies on hole 1 and hole 5. I was even par through 14, but took 2 bogies on the last 4 holes to finish at +2. I was pleased with my play considering it was the fourth course of the day, and by far the toughest of them all.

It is my favorite course in Mississippi now, out of the 10 I have played there. Reminiscent of Inverness in Alabama, or Jim Warner at the PDGA HQ in Georgia. I really wanted to give it a perfect score. I can see why they chose not to put in concrete tees though, carrying sacs of concrete up and down those steep hills would be brutal.

Extreme Course/ Not for beginners 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 23, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I like extreme elevation and this course delivers it. Unlike ordinary forest courses where missing the fairway places you in dense smaller trees with difficult up shots, this course has that and adds the element of punishing dropoffs which take your disc away from the basket. I like a challenge and this course is as challenging as they get. Accuracy is essential; missing the landing zones on these fairways on ridges usually results in bogeys or doubles. I also like courses that build cardio strength and it is great exercise traversing the hills and valleys at Tombigbee 2. Tee pads are carpet or concrete and are quite good. There are benches on almost every hole if not all of them. The baskets are solid Mach 3 that catch very well. The course offers a lot of shade.

Cons:

Can get slick after a rain and could certainly be hazardous with the steep climbs on several holes. Ticks and chiggers (red bugs) quite prevalent in the warm months---insect spray is highly recommended. I give my self a good soaking of deet and tuck my long pants into my socks and this seems to keep them off me, but others who forget to spray often report ticks getting on them. The extreme elevation and physically-demanding hills will be a con for some, especially beginners and I absolutely don't recommend beginners even play this course. It's built for the pros. No bathrooms or water on the course.

Other Thoughts:

The tee signs out at Tombigbee 2 are informative with distances and an overhead view of the hole on them. The other course in this state park (#1) is a very fun and pretty short course that is a shortened version of its younger brother T2.

Championship Level 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 1, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Championship. Level. Course. The Southern Nationals Am Championship was held here a few years back. You need a complete game to shoot well here. It really challenges your mental, physical, and spiritual game as well (You'll be praying. A lot. Trust me.) A day shooting par is great here. Every hole is enjoyable because of the sheer difficulty of some holes. Elevation is used to an extreme on many holes. Legitimate Par 4's, yet no easy birdies. Everything here is earned.

Cons:

If you're a first timer, PLEASE STICK TO 1! You will hate the sport trying this course as your first. Snakes are out and about in the warm months. Easy to kick and go way, way, wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy off course and lose a disc. The hills are very steep, which make you tired by hole 3. As if being possibly +3 by then isn't bad enough. No pro pads, because basically every pad is the pro pad. This course has serious bite to it.

Other Thoughts:

Doubles course record is -11. I know that because me and a local pro shot -9 and we asked the designer about it. That was a ridiculously good day. We have a saying here, "After playing Bigbee 1, don't let it get to your ego. After playing Bigbee 2,.....don't let it get to your ego." You're bound to shoot really well at 1. But don't get a big head going to 2 because the game notices that, and the game will not be good to you. The best pros have horrible days at 2. But don't let it get you down. Learn from it. The #2 course in the Tupelo area. Only one better (and tougher if you can believe it) is Trace Gold.

A Hidden Gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 2, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The first time I played this course, my buddy and I had no idea what to expect. After playing the first course, we were not expecting what we got. The shock value on the first hole alone is a plus( A straight uphill shot)

The ravines make this course a very high risk/reward for essentially every shot, making it a very mentally grueling course.

Length is great, but more importantly, shot selection is key because an arrant throw will cost you more than one stroke due to the dense woods.

There are not a lot of filler holes at this course, it seems like every single hole is a challenge, and a little different.

The "hell hole" is the definition of a signature hole. It goes up hill for several hundred feet, then a throw across a deep ravine to a basket elevated on another hill... It is simple breathtaking.

Cons:

Some of the tees are on a road, although the road is lightly used it is still a pain

Not easy to find the course from bigbee one if you are a first timer at the park

Other Thoughts:

This course could be dropped into the middle of Charlotte, and it would fit right in with the likes of all those legendary courses there, seriously. If this course was located somewhere else in the nation, a lot of people would be buzzing about it.
