Relatively Serene Play

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 23, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tradewinds was my first south FL disc golf experience and it was one I was quite impressed with. The directions I had actually didn't start me at hole one, but hole 4. However the course is a true loop so it doesn't really matter.

The main parking area is around to the left side of the park away from the lake, where you will see a large map and hole one not far from it.

There are three sets of tees with the White seeming to be the main as they are the only ones with signage, longer blue tees and short reds that are about unpaved.

Baskets are DGA I think Mach V for the main placements, but many have an alternate pin that is a Blue Mach X. Some of these are longer and more fun, while several are short and sort less interesting. In either baskets case they catch well as long as you aren't coming in too soft.

You begin with a couple of open holes that throw into or over some trees and then on 4 you get to interact with the water for a few holes. On 5-7 you can throw a line that goes over the water and that adds some fun challenge.

Then you weave some lines through semi wooded holes and end with more traditional park style lines that while simple are a lot of fun to play and many flirt with OB.

While the design isn't flawless, it's thoughtful and I really enjoyed this calm and fairly breezy play. Though from the long tees it's no pushover I was still able to attack it to a good score even with only my limited travel bag.

The views of the lake push this from a 3 to a 3.5 to me, the holes are fun on their own but that really adds a nice element.

Cons:

The cons that exist here are ones that many busy parks have and one of those is a huge amount of pedestrian traffic that is largely unconcerned with disc golf.

Several holes throw over or near the walking path and I would be prepared to wait at least a few times for your line to be clear. On one of the later holes the tee is even on the walking path and while it's an economically friendly idea it's not my favorite from a course traffic standpoint.

Other than that the only issues are the later holes can feel a bit repetitive and it's super flat. The elevated pin on 10 is the closest thing to an elevation change the course has. That's just normal for this part of the country though and I don't count it against the score really.

Other Thoughts:

It's a fun breezy play and if you pay attention to your tee/basket combo anyone from a beginner to a pro could have a good time here. As long as the newer players don't tempt fate by throwing over the water when they don't have control.

Come for the Disc Golf, Stay for the Butterflies 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 21, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

+Poured-in tee pads on each hole, offering Rec/Am/Pro at each hole.
+Great signage indicating hole positioning, OBs, and distance to pin.
+Course takes the players through the south end of the park, which is very scenic and beautiful.
+Plenty of variety in holes (open, wooded, some elevated baskets, water, etc.).
+Benches at most of the holes to put your bag down when teeing off.
+Giant wooden sign that says "Disc Golf" with a course overview and some basic rules of the game behind it.
+Visitor center sells Innova discs and accessories.

Cons:

-Recovering discs in the water on holes #4 and #5 can be tricky as there are a bunch of shoreline rocks and plant life to contend with.
-Most of the holes are placed by a busy walkway that a lot of park patrons use for running/walking. Players may need to wait a few minutes for these folks to clear out before teeing off.
-Some holes become unplayable (water-logged) for a bit after a storm passes through.
-Some holes have some trash in the playing area.

Other Thoughts:

I like this course because it is close by to where I live, it can be challenging, and is very inviting to newer players. Most of the people I've run into are very friendly. While this may not be a destination course like Snyder Park, it is definitely worth playing through regularly, especially during the week when it is less busy (park stays open until 7:30 PM EST).

Bring Sunscreen and Stable Discs. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 1, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Well maintained park and course. Easy to get up and down on most holes. Great pro shop in park office.

Cons:

A few holes have bad drainage so they can get swampy but the SUN takes care of that quickly. One poke and hope hole. WINNNDDDDD! lol

Other Thoughts:

If your a beginner the wind can get frustrating out here as its a constant of the course. that being said its a good course for all levels of play. I prefer the more technical courses, but this course has many opportunities to frustrate you into improvement!

I Like It! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 3, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very fun course that caters to all skill levels. Nice use of available terrain and water features. Informative signage and decent tees. The course is pretty and has a couple of sweet signature holes. The course was very clean and is well maintained. Another solid Broward County course. Friendly local DGers.

Cons:

Busy multi-use park with heavily used sidewalks and roads flirting with the course. It's worth dealing with for a course like this though and getting out there early helps minimize the conflicts.

Might want to bring some floaters if you like throwing your discs into water hazards.

Other Thoughts:

I've played all of the listed public Broward County courses now and agree with my friend Reposado about their eerie similarities to each other. Which is mostly a good thing. It's good to see this area upping their game and providing a wealth of good courses for locals and out of town visitors.

Beautiful Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 24, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Big beautiful park, course is located towards the back past Butterfly World.
- Lots of distance, with a few technical holes mixed-in.
- Good course for all skill levels.
- MachX amazing baskets!
- Good course map, signage, and tee pads.
- Baskets are located in intelligent places, utilizing all the natural foliage available.
- Big beautiful lake with a signature peninsula hole at #6!
- Course has changed a number of times showing commitment by park and local scene.
- Clean, well-maintained with restrooms and water fountains.

Cons:

- Safety issues with people crossing on bike/running path which winds through a majority of the course.
- Not much technical challenge.
- Minimal elevation change (pretty common in FL).
- Park employees will prevent you from going into the water to retrieve your disc.
- I understand the addition of hole 9 in the middle of the woods but it has problems. If it rains the hole is unplayable to the point where you can't even walk down the fairway without getting soaked. Also, the entire left side of the hole is an extremely dense thicket. It can be very difficult to recover a disc in there.

Other Thoughts:

Bottom Line: It is a beautiful course that is very well maintained. The palm trees and big gorgeous lake capture what DG in SOFLO is all about.

Also, there are soccer fields and lots of open space to get some field work in before or after your round. It costs $1.50 to get in the park but it is well worth it. You can also play Easterlin Park (15 minutes away) for a technical challenge and use your receipt to get in without paying another admission if you go the same day.

Solid for All Levels 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 7, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

18 holes with 3 tees to almost every hole (some share a pad) and two baskets (Mach X on every hole, Prodigy T1 on many holes) allow for different play. Course meanders through the south end of a large, scenic county park with mostly open holes, a really tight hole, and some water challenges plus an OB road on a few other holes. Easy to navigate. The signage (on the course) is adequate, but you can see most of the baskets from the tee save hole 11. Easy to get to. Nominal county park fee charged on weekends and holidays, but no additional disc golf fee, and the park office sells plastic too, always a plus.

Cons:

Off the fairways on a couple of holes can be really tough to find plastic (3, 8, and 9 come to mind). Please no swimming after your lost water throws. Course does get marshy in spots after downpours (especially 13). Please keep your eyes open for people walking on the paths or cars on the entrance road by 14-18.

Other Thoughts:

The Broward Disc Golf Association has continually sought to improve the course, and have recently laid down a woodchip path from 8 to 9. It is very nice and dry. This course has improved a lot in the short time I have lived down here and is one of the better courses to play if you're visiting near Fort Lauderdale.

Fun well balanced course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 19, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is well maintained and has a good variety of holes for beginners. Although friendly to beginners many holes are good distance and could tell that even advanced players were challenged on many holes. The main office at the entrance has a free map of the course to help orient players. Some walking/jogging trails overlap with course but not really a problem, just need to play responsibly.

Cons:

Some holes get waterlogged after rain and mosquitoes are vicious at a few holes so might want to bring repellent.

Other Thoughts:

Very happy I chose this as my first course.

An Icon of South Florida 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Metal signs mark Amateur tees. Concrete pads. Mix of open shots and some with woods and obstacles.

Cons:

No marks for Pro pads. (Not all pins even have them). Easy to lose discs in lake or woods. Mostly open area gets overly hot, rain drains slowly leaving puddles.

Other Thoughts:

Fun and challenging., Pins move every month to long and short positions. Bring discs you don't mind losing for first few times playing.Typical Florida weather- prepare accordingly.

Good fun for everyone... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 28, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Plenty of opportunity to air it out along with several holes that require more finesse. Well kept course with good tee visibility and labeling.

Cons:

Baskets can be difficult to find unless you've played the course before, with a couple tucked into wooded alcoves.
The water can get in the way of your discs at times...so throw wisely.
Course is pay to play, since you have to pay to get into the park, but it is pretty cheap.

Other Thoughts:

I have a personal vendetta against the lake at Tradewinds park, as I'm certain I've managed to individually raise the water level with my disc contributions there.
Other than that, I don't have anything to complain about. The area is great, the park is nice, and the course allows me to spray and pray my drives without remorse on most holes. If you're at all familiar with South Florida, you'll know that it's bound to be hot and potentially buggy, but that's just what So Fla is...

I'd recommend this disc golf course to anyone in the area!

Very open course, and hot in the Summer! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2007 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I play this course when visiting family in FLA. I'm from WI, so the scenery is a welcome change. Very cool little lizards just about everywhere you look.
"Butterfly World" is right next door, so if the family is not into discgolf, drop them off there, and walk over the first tee for the course.
There are some very nice looking areas on some of these holes. Very large trees, impressive canopy's, and very well maintained overall.

Cons:

This course is hot in the Summertime. Because it's so open, there aren't too many places to escape the hot Florida sun. Bring water with you, and probably about 1.5 hours to play, as you will need to rest from time to time.
There is a marshy area, and some pretty thick bushy areas that make it very easy to loose your disc. If you keep things in the fairway however, you should have no worries.

Other Thoughts:

Course is in a huge park, and could easily be expanded. I will be back everytime I'm in the area.

Bring lots of water & Bug Spray 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 29, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well laid out and very clean course with a lot of opportunities to air it out. Some interesting water holes - even if it did claim my Xcaliber. Good signs and well-maintained tee pads on all holes.

Cons:

The last 3 or 4 holes seem to have just been crammed into the available space and not as well thought out as the rest of the course. Not a lot of elevation change between holes, but the area is pretty flat so not much that can be done about it. Also, it's South Florida, so it's ridiculously hot. Bring lots of water. During the summer I wouldn't recommend starting a round between 11:00am and 5:00pm. It's just too hot. Watch out for fire ants, mosquitoes, etc.

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 22, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very big and wide open course at a beautiful 600 acre park. Several holes run along a big lake, but the lake should not come into play unless you are a lefty.

Cons:

This park is very aptly named. The wind is almost always a factor making even a short putt a difficult shot in some occasions. Most holes are very wide open and do not require any difficult shots.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course for players of all skill levels. The wide open fairways are great for beginners and the pro tees and alternate pin placements can add 200+ feet to some of the holes.

Tradewinds park is free during the week and $1.50 per person on weekends. The park is also open on most hollidays.
