The Hills Are Alive With Steaming Cow Pies! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Trapp Family Lodge complex is set on 2500 acres in the beautiful mountain country of Vermont. The disc golf course is easy to find. It starts and finishes just below the road at the bakery/brewery building. There is a mailbox at the beginning with scorecards, pencils and a sign-in sheet. There is a practice basket at the start. The tee pads are natural. The baskets are DGA models with the red number on top. There are two sets of tees, the longer Blues and the shorter ones. The shorts are a little harder to locate.

# 1 hole starts just below the pen holding the goats. You city boys need to be prepared to wiggle under, step over or just disconnect and then reconnect the electric fence multiple times while playing this course. Your second hazard, especially on the open field holes, are constant, fresh, steaming cow pies. I was amazed that I was able to luckily avoid having my disc land in one of them. There are a couple of nearby streams where you could wash off the offended disc, if need be.

Holes 1, 2, 6 and 9 play in the fields. The rest mostly play in the wooded areas. There is a nice variety of distances ranging from under 200' (# 8) to # 4's almost 400'.

# 2, a 350' downhill, which looks rather harmless from the tee, features a creek not too far behind the basket as well as the numerous cow pies so there are hazards there.

Actually, my favorite hole was the course's shortest, # 8. It's just a straight 180' but there are a small grove of trees center fairway which force you to make a decision on one of two routes off the tee.

Cons:

The electric fence is on. Over, Under or just unhook it and walk through. Just make sure to hook it back up.

These Von Trapp Family cows are amazing producers of waste material. You would think there's a herd of 100's but I didn't see any. Your disc could land in a nasty, smelly, fresh pile!

The grass on # 9 was pretty tall. Why aren't the cows and goats doing their jobs and munching it down?

Other Thoughts:

I was hoping to run into 78 year old Johannes. He's Maria's youngest son and still lives on the property. That's some pretty amazing stuff when you think that the movie "The Sound of Music" came out in the early 60's and the Trapp family walked over the border into Switzerland to escape the Nazis during WW II and eventually ended up here in Vermont. Maybe the Nazis disapproved of disc golf. Perhaps Hitler had a weak arm and couldn't throw 275'.
