A surprisingly good short course

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Great equipment (Mach X baskets, solid signage)
-Beautifully maintained property (bar one aspect, see cons). This is an attraction at a stunning country estate/private park and the care taken extends to their disc golf course
-Good range of challenges and shots. Some wooded, some open and even some elevation change
-Really well targeted for the families that will be playing this
-Very private and seperate from the rest of the park. No blind shots and no interference means no worries about endangering other park users

Cons:

-It's very tucked out of the way at the back of the park (and it's a BIG park). If you're only there for the disc golf it takes quite some finding for the small thing it is
-It's around £15 to enter the park (everything after that is free), but unless you want a day out at the park too that's quite alot for the 9 holes on offer
-Maintenance wise the only thing unattended are branches/bushes that actually interfere with golf lines, meaning some fairways were unduly shrunk. I think it demonstrates somewhat the popularity of the site for disc golf itself vs as a garden

Other Thoughts:

The park this course is located in is genuinely stunning and well worth a family day out

A tough test 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 12, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tees - All the tees are well presented and properly built. Time has been taken to look at the positioning of the long tee to make the player think about shot shaping, not always making a hole a straight forward punt and giving the player a risk/reward choice to make.

Baskets - This is a new course so the baskets are in good condition. I didn't experience any issues with bounce outs.

Managed site - The Trentham estate is managed by a team of gardeners. They were busy working whilst I was playing, clearing dead wood and tidying up the site. Everyone who I came into contact with was happy to move to a different hole to allow me to play through and not have to wait for them to finish. Obviously this might not be possible at the height of summer.

Cons:

Entry price - I don't mind paying to play disc golf, it is part of the progression of the sport that some courses are going to be pay to play. However I do feel that £12 to play this course is totally unacceptable. I do understand that the cost includes entry to the whole estate and that no discount is offered for players of the course, due to its location, you have to walk through the estate to reach the course. This cost with certainly put a lot of players off.

Other Thoughts:

This course has been tucked away in a small area of wild woodland. Some trees have been cleared to fit the course in, however it has left some interesting lines to hit and for the aggressive players there are some lovely over the op shots to attempt.

Hole 1 - A long straight hole, with an footpath on your left hand side.

Hole 2 - A slight dog leg right, with a protected green. The longer throwers will have no problem reaching this basket in 1

Hole 3 - A tight tunnel shot is needed here. The basket is set between 2 silver birch trees. Will you be brave and try to thread the needle?

Hole 4 - A short uphill hole, to a basket which is protected with a very low ceiling. In winter when I played this hole it was easy to see where to go, but in the height of summer I can see this being a very tricky hole.

Hole 5 - This hole is deceptive. On the face of it, you have a wide open tee shot to a tight green, however the tree cover hides the fact that the trees have been cut away to the right of the basket, creating a wind tunnel past the basket. Ignore the wind to your peril.

Hole 6 - A tunnel shot through the pines, with the basket off set on the left. A very difficult hole to get right, especially when you take into account the 1 thin spruce on the right which has not been cut back and stops an up and over shot

Hole 7 - A straight, downhill shot, towards the lakeside. Any discs which drift to the sides of the fairway beware....the bracken is very thick and swallows discs.

Hole 8 - An S shaped hole, with some of the most vicious brambles have ever experienced. This is a really tough hole.

Hole 9 - A shot straight hole to finish, with an amnesty bin for borrowed discs set just behind the basket. For anyone who may throw a bit long, you can use this bin as a nice backstop.

Practice Basket - I honestly feel that the estate are missing a trick here. The practice basket is offset from the rest of the course on the shore of the lake. There are 3 tees, one with a stream crossing and the basket is set on a hill where the wind can swirl. There is even an option for a longer Par 4, if players were to tee off from the statue at the centre of the formal gardens. This could be something to look at if a larger competition could be organised.

Overall a fun course to play but, with the cost to play I cant see many players rushing to experience it!
