Pros:
(3.580 Rating) A medium length wooded course that will appeal to almost every player.
- GAMEPLAY - I was digging the intriguing and vast collection of hole types here. Holes seemed to break both ways an even amount. Hole distances ranged from the upper 100s to mid 500s. Tree coverages included lightly wooded, moderately wooded and heavily wooded examples. Some of the wooded holes played down well-defined lanes, while others had gap options. I enjoyed all of the multi-play par 4 holes. I think there were 4 of them, but this may vary depending on what placements the baskets are at. Finally, a fantastic water clear finish on (18). I chickened out and threw the front tee on this one as the water level was up a touch from its previous bone dry level. Really the only missing element was elevation. Maybe a hole or two varies in grade by 20 feet or so. I did like the cool 8 foot high raised mound for (11s) basket.
- TEES - Of all the states I've been to, no state has consistently had larger than average tees than the ones I've seen in Texas. Trophy Club's tees fit in great with this moniker. Not all the pads were the same size, but most were 8 feet wide by 12 feet long. Wowza.
- AMENITIES - In addition to the big tees, Trophy club has DISCatcher baskets and it's filled out with a lot of other fine extras. There are multiple basket placements on roughly half of the holes which appears to change some holes dramatically. There is a practice basket and restroom. There are short pads on a vast majority of the holes, but they are not paved. I also appreciated the many trash cans placed within wooden boxes where the lid tops doubled as a bag table. Well done Trophy Club.
- SKILL LEVEL FRIENDLY - Due to the two tee element, I could see this place appealing to many skill levels. The back tee layout looked to be ideal for MA2s, with cross over appeal to MA1s and MA3s, while the short tees should appeal to MA4s and likely most beginners as well.
- SIGNAGE AND NAVIGATION - The tee signage was great with all the required info. As for navigational flow, it seemed fine as well, although I wasn't paying full attention as I did have a guide. Many of the transitions had obvious trails leading to the next tee. I believe there was a course map as well, but I am not 100 percent certain.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - I scored the beauty roughly 80 percentile. Looks wise, I thought (18) was the highlight. I also loved the monster tree standing guard in front of (17s) basket. Just a very nice aesthetically pleasing course from start to finish.
Cons:
A solid course all the way through, just not elite level to me.
- HOLE 8 - I genuinely liked or loved every hole on this course except this one. Hole (8) is an impossible ultra tight 90 degree arcing play with extended deep pocket. The only way to park this hole is to carry the disc to the basket. Thankfully the course only had the one garbage hole.
- TIME PLAY - Like most great courses, the time to play this one requires a bit more time. I'll call it the savoring factor. Anyways, my 3 some spent nearly two hours here.
- WHY NOT A 4.0 TO ME - With so many pros and zero major cons, some might wonder why not a 4.0? First off, I really liked the course, and even favorited a few days after throwing it, which is something I do for only 10 percent of the courses I've played. Note, my favorites are not the same list as my highest rated courses. I didn't think any element here was at the elite, or best of the best level. I think the amenities package was the strongest element. While things like challenge, beauty and hole variety were all very good, but all were shy of where my typical 4.0 rated course measures out at.
Other Thoughts:
In my eyes, Trophy Club is a winner among the courses on the west end of the metroplex. It has everything most disc golfers would want in a high quality disc golf experience. My DWF course count is now at 9, and this is my second favorite one after Harry Myers on the far other side of the metro. I'm going to guess the Trophy Club is not a top 5 metro area course as there has got to be close to 100 in the area now. However, perhaps a top 10 metro course. This is definitely a must play course for those that live in the Dallas Ft Worth area. For travelers that find themselves on the west side, I think this would apply as well. Courses it reminded me of include Williamson County in Austin Texas, Johnson Park south of Milwaukee, Ocala Greenway in Central Florida and Cane Ridge south of Nashville.
- THANK YOU - A huge thanks to DGCR member aclay for joining me and my brother-in-law and for guiding us through this course. A great time again discussing all the disc golf adventure stories. I hope we can do it again the next time I'm back in DWF.
