In The Flat Field 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Turtlecreek is a schizophrenic course whose wooded half shines while the open holes predictably fall flat. The 10 holes in the woods (7-9, 11-17) offer some of the best intermediate-level shot shaping challenges in the area. There's good variety to boot, with left, right, and straight finishes on fairways with slightly above-average tightness. Playing well in the woods at Turtlecreek is attainable and satisfying for a rec-level player. A full 18 of these holes would likely be a 4.0 disc course.

The wooded course plays in the same space as a walking trail, but never down or across it. This makes most of the course feel disc golf exclusive, which is always a plus.

Baskets are unfussy Mach 2's in good repair that catch well.

The tee signs feature distance, hole diagrams, and a happy little turtle who just wants you to play your best.

Cons:

Holes 1-6, 10, & 18 are in an almost entirely flat, open field and offer little in the way of obstacles or lines. If the entire course were like these holes it would likely be a 1.0 or 1.5 disc routing. Being an eternal optimist, I will note that these holes offer some of the most consistent wind play in the area, which (in my mind) keeps them from being completely throwaway.

The wooded holes seem perpetually swampy, and hold water for days after the most recent rain. Even once the standing water has dried up, the humidity remains. This can make for some uncomfortable rounds.

The wooded tees, which once were rubber mats, are in various states of disarray. It still beats natural tees, but they could use a little TLC.

Some of the awesome tee signs are missing on a handful of the wooded holes.

Other Thoughts:

I've seen this course fairly busy as often as I've seen it completely empty, so it's hard to predict what players will encounter.

Pros:

Wide variety of shots. Great for beginners if you go by the posted Pars.

Cons:

Wooded areas could be kept up better. Tee pads in the woods are beat up.

Other Thoughts:

This is the perfect course to work on your throw. Lots of holes in the wide open. Also has lots of wooded holes to practice hitting lines.

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 9, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Baskets are in good shape.

Tee pads are in good shape and can come in handy as this course tends to stay very wet after rain.

I really like their customized tee signs. Very clear on where you are throwing as well as obstacles and distance.

Course flows extremely well. Parking right by #1 course starts with open holes through first 6-7 holes then goes back into some of the best woodsy holes in the area.

Hole variety is probably my favorite thing about this course. There are holes for the distance throwers at the beginning and the better accuracy players will do better in the woods. I really like some of the dog legs on this course. I always find courses boring that are only for the long throwers, probably because I thrive on the accuracy woods holes.

Course is really pretty.

Never crowded.

Cons:

Foliage is pretty well maintained. There are a couple of holes where I think they need to cut some brush but with standing water on some of the woods holes I understand this can be difficult.

Not many benches or trash cans around.

Not many elevation changes at all. Course stays very flat throughout. Especially the wide open holes at the beginning.

Course is surprisingly not very challenging as I have seen myself and the people I am playing with botch a throw deep into the woods and recover rather easily.

Other Thoughts:

No restrooms throughout the course so be aware.

Be careful on the bridges after rain, they become very slick and I have seen a couple dangerous/hilarious wipeouts on them.

Fun...and not fun. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Turtlecreek is an 18 hole course, set in a multi-purpose park in Lebanon, OH, not too far from Cincinnati.

DGA baskets, all in good repair, and caught as well as you need. One pin position per hole.

A mix of rubber and concrete tees. Concrete on the open holes, rubber in the woods. One pin position per hole.

Nice mix of lines once you get in the woods. Tight-ish tunnels, forced straight, left and right shots...very nice. Several of those holes are shorter, but there's a couple that will make you stretch out and throw a good shot. The rough is punishing enough that you don't want to go there, as well. Decently done design in this portion of the course.

Cons:

So much open. The first 6 holes are completely open. B-b-boring. Wind will be your biggest enemy here. With the wooded holes being quite fun, it's a bummer that there wasn't more of an attempt to spread out the open holes.

It would be nice if there were multiple tees on a lot of the holes, just to help the replay factor. Same goes for one pin position. There could be many interesting alternatives on many of the holes.

Not much elevation. It's pretty much flat throughout. There is a small creek bed in the woods, but it's nothing that should really interfere with any shots.

Other Thoughts:

While Turtle isn't bad, it's not overly great, either. Even with the really nice wooded holes, all I seem to remember about it is the uber-boring first 6 holes and other wide open shots.

With so many other great options in the greater Cincy area, it's hard to recommend a trip here. If you happen to be close, it's worth a stop, but if I'm back in the area, it's not a course I'd be searching out.

Not bad 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 18, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Doesn't seem to be overly crowded, course provides a different variety of shots, fairly easy to navigate.

Cons:

Open holes get very boring, you will hate them on windy days. Open holes are close together so pay attention. Wooded holes get muddy. Some of the tee pads could use a make over

Other Thoughts:

This isn't a bad course but it didn't blow me away either. Not sure I'd go out of my way to play it a lot. I definitely prefer Sycamore. If not for the first 6 holes being so bland, I'd have no problem bumping my rating to 4 stars.

Good Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 22, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good mix of open and wooded holes.
Great mix of distances.
Well kept.
Finish where you start.
Very low non DG traffic.

Cons:

Maybe I go at the wrong times, but this is by far the most populated course I frequent. Still, it's never like throw and wait, throw and wait or anything like that.

Accuracy is needed in the woods, as you can definitely lose a disc back there.

Wooded holes can get muddy.

Other Thoughts:

Turtlecreek has a mix of asphalt (open) and rubber (wooded) tees. And while the asphalt will hold up better, if you get out there with the morning dew, you will slip and slide on the asphalt tees. Also, the open holes are really suceptible to wind. Plan on a few more mph than what you're feeling in your driveway before you go.

Not Flyboy, but aerial nonetheless 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Turtlecreek DGC is a great place to get in a round with variety (woods and open fields) AND to watch (and hear) large remote control airplanes and frequent skydivers (well...hopefully you don't hear them...that might indicate a disaster in the making). It's kind of a game of flying discs and an airshow rolled into one.
The course is well-maintained despite limited trash receptacles, and features eight open field shots that can be influenced by the frequent breezes and the few planted trees and hillocks. It has ten wooded holes that are not overly tight, but the well-defined lines can sometimes be challenging for the rec to intermediate player. A creek comes into play on a couple of holes (or more, if you do what I did last time out, and kick off a tree deep into the woods!)
Signature holes are probably the long S-bend #11 and the open 600 foot #18 (the only two holes I've yet to par, after five rounds here).
Baskets are decent, and the open tees are asphalt, while the wooded tees are flypads. The flow and design are fairly straightforward with minimal hiking between one basket and the next tee. There are usually good tee signs, and next tee signs, when needed.
The park has bathrooms, water fountains, a small kiddie play area, a walking path, and a couple of shelters, but I've not seen much other activity here besides the 'air show' and the disc golf, so it's good for the latter.

Cons:

There are only a few benches on the course, which is mostly flat (though most players enjoy a variety of elevation, a relatively flat course could be a plus for older knees!).
Though there is a practice basket, the very few alternate teepads and baskets don't seem to be used much.
Well north of Lebanon, Ohio, this course is situated pretty far out from major population centers (however, it's still within a 45 minute drive for Cincinnati and Dayton players).

Other Thoughts:

Just attended the Turtlecreek Open yesterday, and on a calm day, the 980 to 1020 rated players shot in the mid to upper 40's for 18 holes here, and those (ahem) who are more (shall we say) 'humble' (like me) were satisfied with 60 or better. So the course accomplishes what decent courses do: separate the wheat from the chaff. Wait..I'm chaff?!

Decent course over all, but it does get a little boring after a few times of playing. Very clean and well maintained though. If its slightly windy where you are around the Lebanon, then its probably really windy on the front 9. It is a wide open field and the wind has nothing to break it for the entire front 9. Nice Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 8, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course has a good mix of open and wooded holes. Allows you to really rip it and then play controlled shots on other holes. The course is easy to navigate.

Cons:

None really worth saying. They are just picky things that don't much matter.

Other Thoughts:

As a course designer I would suggest that designers pay attention to the PDGA par guidelines when setting par. You cannot set par based on the distance alone. #6 is 420 and according to the PDGA it should be a Par 4 from the RED Tee. The 600' #18 is the only legitimate Par 5 from the RED. That is based on distance. Foliage plays a big part of the par and most of the holes listed 4 or 5 should really be Par 3 or 4 based on PDGA rules.

A Well Maintained Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 29, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A very well maintained facility with good signage and nice tee pads. A neat feature in the design of this course is that you can play 9 holes in the open or 9 in the woods.

Cons:

Overall the course feels very "vanilla" many of the wooded holes feel the same and holes in the open field have little variation.
Lots of people play here, so on nice days you feel like you are kinda fighting the crowd and in peoples way.

The terrain here is very flat, on only a few of the holes are there any elevation changes and none of them are very significant. This makes the wind a huge factor.

A Beginner's Thoughts 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 12, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Excellent course for men and women players. Most newer players aren't throwing 350' consistently and this course gives you a chance on several wide open holes to just get in some decent practice on your distance drives. The 2nd half is nicely wooded with some tighter lanes and let's you work on the more technical side of the game with several possibility at aces if you are good enough.

Cons:

The wind can be absolutely brutal on this course in the open portion and even when you keep them low and hard they can tend to wander off in any number of different directions. The wind seems to change every 60 seconds out here and it can definitely make for some interesting throws.

Other Thoughts:

I am really just a beginner having only been playing for about 3 months and I use this course to track my progression. Playing at the marked pars I usually finish around par to 2 over with a best game of 5 under.

Nice Rec Level Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 23, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has newer, adequate baskets (but only two sets of chains), good tee signs, and good concrete tee pads (although they may be a bit short for some people's taste). The course also has good flow with no long walks between holes. It also has good, simple directional signs for the few walks that it does have.

I played this course in a tournament, so this may not be always the case, but the course was in immaculate condition. The open holes were mowed low and the wooded holes had fresh wood chips down almost every fairway.

This course offers great variety. There are the wide open holes that force you to learn to place your shots when nothing constrains you and that make you deal with the wind (although it was not at all windy when I played). But there are also tightly wooded holes that make you learn to throw controlled drives with tight lines and turns. In addtion, even within the wooded holes there was a great amount of variety with hyzer shots, straight drives, and turnovers.

There are three holes that end on mounds. These provided a good test of putting and required decent strategy to not blow up on a simple hole.

As a Novice rated player the length of this course also appealed to me. There were many holes under 250 feet. There were not too many holes that I would consider very long (400+).

Cons:

Short tee pads, less than top-of-the-line baskets, and the overall length of the course limit its appeal to disc golfers of all skill levels. For advanced level players, this course may challenge their upshot game but it will rarely provide them a chance for long drives.

For tournament play or on crowded days (assuming the course gets some despite being far from a population center), there are a number of the open holes that have serious fairway interference issues. Considering how short many of the holes are and how close many of the next tees are to the previous baskets, there are many times when other players are in danger of being hit simply by being on their tee pad or in their fairway.

The course is pretty much flat. The open holes are not very challenging (except on windy days) due to a lack of trees and OB. Some of the wooded holes are a bit gimmicky and luck-oriented with their "fairway" lines: it is not entirely clear what the intended shot is supposed to be other than a putter tossed 100 feet or a shot thrown with eyes shut while hoping for the best.

Other Thoughts:

On the whole, I really did enjoy this course. It was fun, challenging, and suited well for my novice game. Plus, it was harder than it seems. The best score on the day (190ish rounds played in the tournament) was only 8 under par (a 57 over 19 holes including 1 temp hole).

The parks department (or whomever controls the park) has added many trees placed strategically on the open holes and put protective material around their trunks. This will only make the course that much better as they grow over the years. Plus they have shown a good commitment to disc golf by maintaining the course very well with mowing, wood chips, gravel, and good signage.

This course is an excellent course for developing players especially since it gives them the challenge of both woods and open holes. However, it may not be a course more advanced players would enjoy very often.

Very tight wooded dog legs with blind holes, not many over 350 but still very difficult if you do not make a great tee shot. Cons:

The front nine are too easy. Many of them are just a basket 200-250 ft. straight ahead with no obstacles. Get your birdies there...

Other Thoughts:

I titled this review Night and Day because the front nine and back nine are so different. However, the back nine do make this a worthwhile trip if you're in the area. Also, Monroe has a course very near by, so stop there and make it a double header...
