Pros:

If you\'re into elevation gain while playing, this course is for you. Tee boxes were AstroTurf and in pretty good condition. Hole maps were accurate and signage for the next hole is good as well. Baskets were in great condition.

Cons:

If you\'re not into elevation gain, this course is not for you.

Other Thoughts:

Holes 10 and 11 have no fairway at all. FYI

Pros:

Tyrol Basin was my 600th course played and at least my 4th ski hill course this year. While not taking the top honors in that regard, it was right up there in the mix. This course brings something different to the table in regards to Madison area DG. Massive elevation and some really fun up and downhill shots. Excellent addition to the area.

The vibe you get out here is different than the other nearby big boys. Total seclusion. A stark contrast to the much more crowded Hiestand/Elver combo. Gorgeous views from the holes on top of the hills. It's amazing that this course is this close to Madison.

The baskets are brand spankin' new DGA Mach VII's. These things are great. They catch well, look slick and are pretty easy to spot. All were mounted nice and level. One pin position per hole from what I could tell.

The tee pads are plush, green artificial turf mats. I love these things personally, but not all folks do. Zero complaints from me though. All of them seemed to be put in flush or at least pretty darn close to it. The pads were pretty solid sized too, which you don't see to often on these types of course. Again, one position per hole.

The tee signs were cleverly done. A wood post with an old ski mounted on that. The signs were attached to the ski's with a basic overhead hole map, par and distance. More than sufficient signage. Looked nice too.

I wasn't really a fan of courses on ski hills until this year. The other 3 I played were all rated pretty highly, and actually lived up to the billing for the most part. Tyrol Basin slots in pretty nicely with those. Probably number 2 out of the 4 actually. This comes down primarily to the execution of the design. It's clear a good amount of thought and effort went into the implementation of this course.

The first 4 holes take you ALL the way up to the top of the hill. It's brutal. From there you play across the hill for the next few. Let's you catch your breath a bit. This is a fantastic design element on this type of course IMO. Then you play down the hill. And quickly. But you're back up then down and up again. But only halfway up. Hard to explain on paper, but your legs will appreciate what the designers did here.

Big, bold next tee signs by every basket help tremendously with navigation. These are by every single basket. SO helpful. It's not too hard to find yor way around usually but these are priceless. There are a few spots where you could go any number of directions. A single arrow goes a long way here.

The course starts and ends right by the parking area. Hole 1 is right by the pay to play kiosk. $5 per person/per day is more than fair for this caliber of course. The course was clean and in fantastic shape when we played it.

Cons:

It's a ski hill. It's brutal in any kind of heat or adverse weather. That's not a knock on the course in any way. This course is NOT for everyone though. You need to be in at least somewhat decent shape to play here. More a forewarning than a con.

The tee signs could be a bit more descriptive of where you need to throw. This is nitpicky, but it'd be helpful on many of the holes where there very basic scorecard map shows one thing, but the sign shows a more nuanced shape. Let's be honest, nobody's trying to walk up the fairways on ski hill courses.

The rough can be pretty thick off the fairways. Even IN the fairways on the couple wooded holes. Thick and itchy.

No restrooms on the hill. And if the bar isn't open, none anywhere. Not a big deal for me, but Mrs. wolf may beg to differ.

Other Thoughts:

This was a pretty decently reviewed course, and I'm running out of nearby options in the state. So I figured this would be as good as anything else for a milestone course. The other reviewers got this one right in my mind. Glad I decided to play this one. Really solid course with spectacular views and just a great design. Would definitely recomend this course for anybody traveling through the area. Well laid out, pretty easy to follow and just a pleasure to play.

I'll be the first to admit that I wasn't buying all the initial hype this place generated, but it's a good one. We don't have a lot of stuff like this in WI. Especially the south central region. I'm impressed and will be back.

Unique and great hike 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The significant changes in elevation add a lot of variety and fun to a course that would otherwise be pretty straightforward. It also is a great opportunity for practicing these shots that other courses in the Madison area are limited in.

I encountered many fewer bugs than expected relative to Madison courses I've been playing.

Beautiful views of the local area including blue mounds.

A good challenge, but not too difficult for decent beginners. I've been playing for around a year and mostly made par with only one birdie and a few bogeys.

Cons:

A couple wooded holes, while very charming, don't really have a green or landing zone. I looked for my disc for a couple of minutes even though it landed next to the basket. It had rolled a few feet away. I imagine discs beating these spots down will eventually make this better.

Beginning players may lose discs on a couple of holes. My five-year old son has played almost daily this spring and doesn't want to skip a hole; however, I was afraid we might say bye-bye to his discs on a couple of downhill shots.

Beware wild parsnip and poison ivy.

Other Thoughts:

Great exercise! On the flip side, anyone planning to play here should be aware that you will climb up and down ski slopes multiple times. I was much more tired after playing this than the full 27 holes at Token creek.

course designers--please add an 800+ foot downhill, wide open shot somewhere. There were so many times when I just wanted to watch a disc cruise down the slope forever.

Cool Breeze 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

For a new course just this summer I felt the course was in good shape. Yes it's hilly, the rough can be rough, but I felt it was fair. The views were spectacular. I'm 65 years old and in pretty good shape and had no problem playing this course, although I was pooped when done with 18 holes. Good variety of holes and shots required. Staff met us upon completion of our round and was very friendly, had some thoughts for future improvements to the course which sounded great. Pay for play for $5 is very fair. Signage is just a stick with a picture but is adequate for now. I'm sure improvements will be coming. Arrows pointing to the next tee were very helpful. Had no problem navigating the course.

Cons:

It is hilly but that's what also makes it a challenging course. The rough can be bad in spots, but what's a course without some tough rough. A good shot puts you in the fairway. Not cart friendly in my opinion unless your cart is lighter than mine. I carried a small bag with 10 discs which was fine.

Other Thoughts:

I see this course getting better and better and a must play course in the area. The two reviews rating this course a 1 is a joke in my opinion.

ELEVATE YOUR GAME 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 23, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Super clean park and clubhouse.
- Has a disc golf country club vibe when you arrive but plays like a backwoods mountain course.
- Large turf tee pads grip and cushion really well & the grass was freshly cut.
- Extreme elevation changes up and downhill with great scenic views.
- Unique mix of terrain and foliage throughout the course that offers great variation and enables imagination and creativity with shot shape and variety.

Cons:

- Would not recommend bringing a cart. There are a few serious walks, between 4 & 5 is a long uphill beast and getting to 16 isn't fun either.
- Walking between hole 9 and 10 seems like a wasted opportunity for another hole, or even an opportunity for a long basket location for hole 9.
- A few barbed wire lines are up by the green on hole 7, but I appreciate the added difficulty.

Other Thoughts:

#1 offers a beautiful start with large trees lining the cut grass on the long uphill fairway & the turf tee pad on the paved patio looks classy AF. It seems easy to make a long uphill hole with a dogleg difficult, but to also have it be beautiful and fun to play is amazing.

#6 & #7 can also be added to the list of of difficult, fun, and beautiful holes.

#9 was probably the most fun shot to throw. The extreme downhill elevation makes the distance seem like nothing.

#10 was particularly beautiful and seemed like it could be the first hole from parts unknown, plus two timber bridges add to the overall beauty.

#13, 14, 17 & 18 Extreme downhill elevation changes are pretty epic and fun to throw, but I left feeling like a super long downhill bomber shot was missing. I walked up to the pad on 17 and saw the basket for 18 and left a little disappointed that wasn't the finishing hole on this awesome property.

There is potential to have a gold level championship layout here with the land that's available, especially adding some real length to a few downhill holes.

Added to my favorites and is a must play destination in the area.

You'll be exhausted but smiling! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 16, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course is incredible and unlike anything else within reasonable driving distance.

+ The biggest pro is hands down the incredible land they have to work with. Given that Tyrol Basin is a ski and snowboard area in the winter, the elevation changes are hands down the biggest obstacle. Trees certainly come in to play, too, but my golly the elevation changes make this course such a blast to play. You'll have 350 holes you can reach by softly throwing a putter (#9) and 350 foot holes that I don't even think the pros could reach (#16) just because of the substantial elevation changes provided by the slopes.

+ So many "signature" holes. Almost every hole here is remarkably memorable. On the ride home, my brother and I both had a hard time choosing our favorite hole because there are so many good choices.

+ The views from the top of the course, such as 9 and 17's tees, are worth taking a moment to enjoy. They make the hike worth it!

+ So much potential! With another set of tees (shorter) and alternative pin placement, this course could very well sneak into 4.5, potentially even 5.0 land. Apparently this is in the plan for summer 2020. I love that there's room for so much more. This could become a serious destination course. I'll have to come back and adjust this review when that time comes!

+ Everyone that we encountered during our rounds were very friendly and accommodating.

+ The equipment is great. The turf tees work very well and the baskets are great. I do wish that the signs were a little bit better (more illustrated and not just on a stick in the ground), but maybe that's asking too much.

+ Professional caliber. This course is definitely geared towards higher skill level players. The birdies do not come easy here.

Cons:

- As several reviewers in the past have mentioned, the course could use a bit of a redesign in certain areas. The walks between some holes (9-10, for example) are quite long. After thinking about it, I think there should be a slide from 9's basket to 10's tee. That'd be incredible.

- Yes, the rough is brutal. It's true. But for an advanced level player, hitting the fairways should absolutely not be an issue. It seems like the staff here really makes an effort to keep the fairways mowed. We had no issues here.

- This course will exhaust you. I'm in great shape (I try to run 3-5 miles a day) and I was dead after two rounds (which apparently hasn't been done before). Even just one round will certainly wipe you out if you're in average shape. Don't plan to do any physical labor after your round here! The hikes are tough.

- The restaurant doesn't open until 4 pm (only open Thursday and Friday). :(

- I could see the frustration from low-level players. You'll need some accurate distance (300 ft+ drives on flat land) if you're wanting to shoot under par.

- WARNING on #9. Do NOT hyzer out to the left! Your disc will be gone. It's very easy to do on your first throw here if you've never thrown down this steeply before.

Other Thoughts:

I'm baffled by the two 1.0 ratings. To me, they're entirely unmerited and to say that it's the worst course in the area is obscene. This course absolutely devastates Capital Springs when it comes to fun factor (in my humble opinion). Capitol Springs is in a prairie (little elevation, little trees). This place is on a wooded ski resort. It's no contest in my eyes. Is it perfect yet? No, of course not. It's only been around for 3 weeks. Is it the beginning of something incredible? Absolutely!

Paying $5 per day per person is an incredible value, though chances are you'll only get in one round before throwing in the towel. You'll be exhausted, but you'll be smiling after your round here.

Worst 18 hole course I've played in WI 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Scenery from the ski hills is spectacular
- Plenty of parking
- Most of the fairways are wide
- The course features a lot of length for players looking to really unleash their drives
- Tee pads are artificial turf on top of concrete, definitely quality. Baskets are just fine, too.

Cons:

--> Way too easy to lose a disc. If you throw it so much as 3 feet into the brush, you will be lucky to find it. The brush needs to be cut back, particularly for a pay to play course. Many holes have steep drop offs that are impossible to fetch a disc. I came home with scratched legs, knots in my clothes, and sore ankles.
--> Terrible layout. The land is great, yet they chose to create a course that goes up and down and up and down. Having played courses on ski hills in the Twin Cities area, this pales in comparison. Many holes begin hundreds of feet past the previous basket; they could have fit 36 holes in the space they fit 18. There is nothing recreational about it, it's exhausting just to walk the course. It's easily a 2 1/2 hour round.
--> The course is not groomed. I played during the first week it was open, when the grass was "cut", and spent too much time looking for discs right in the middle of the fairway. I also stepped on a bee hive in the ground. And the walkway down the 9th hole is actually dangerous. It's too steep; someone is going to get hurt. I am especially disappointed because this is a pay to play course; I expect better when I'm charged to play.

Other Thoughts:

I live on Madison's west side, and I am a regular at Elver Park and Capital Springs. I play all of Madison's courses, and enjoy driving to Janesville, Rockford, Milwaukee, the Twin Cities and Northern Wisconsin to play, too. I don't say this lightly, but this is the worst 18 hole course I have played, by far. I eagerly waited for it to open, seeing as it is only 20 minutes away. I can't really sugarcoat this, I thought it was terrible and I will not be back. Unless you are a real professional, I wouldn't recommend it.

Solid, Challenging Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Beautiful property on the ski hill, which offers a variety of shots, beautiful views, and unique terrain.

2) Solid layout with hole 1 and 10 starting near chalet.

3) Scorecard with map is available by pay station ($5).

4)Amenities available on-site (we were able to use the bathrooms when there, but unsure if they will always be available)

5)Teepads (turf). Although I do not often play on turf teepads, these ones definitely provided excellent grip.

6) Shot variety offered both uphill and downhill shots, a variety of distances, and utilized different shot selections.

7) Had a few wooded holes with tighter lines in the middle of the course.

8) Fairways were more than fair (typically utilizing part of ski routes) and the majority of the course had relatively short grass and was decently groomed. There were one or two parts that did had some longer grass.

9) One unique hole with a shot down a black diamond ski route. This may be the steepest incline I've thrown a disc off of. This was a cool hole, but one where if not paying attention you may be looking for a disc. Our group only ended up looking for some because we threw multiple off the top.

Cons:

1) One hole in the middle of the round was less than 150ft. Seemed sort of like a throwaway hole, considering all the unused property.

2) This course was listed as a par 55. With all the property there, I would like to see a few more par 4s/par 5. Some longer downhill holes would have been nice as well. The back 9 played a lot shorter/easier than the front 9.

3) Signage could use some work, but this is a new course so I would expect that to come with time. We were able to find all the holes, but a couple longer walks had us questioning if we were headed in the wrong direction.

4) Not cart friendly. I did bring my cart for my first round there, but would not plan on bringing it again. Some holes it was fine, but on the steep uphill climbs, it was very difficult to have (although it did allow me to bring enough water).

5) Off the fairways can be thick, but the fairways are more than fair and really should only be looking for discs on very errant throws.

6) One green is near a barbed wire fence. You can not see basket from teepad and if you land short, you could potentially be on other side of this. We did not notice it until near the green. Possibly considering a relocation of this basket would be beneficial.

Other Thoughts:

Challenging course. This seems to be a course designed for upper level players. Expect a challenge. I am an intermediate player, did not shoot well, and still enjoyed my round and the difficulty of the course.

The terrain was tiring to walk on so bring lots of water and a good pair of shoes. You go up and down the hill on several occasions.

Talked to some guys working at facility who indicated there may be a second set of teepads in the future. This means the course will hopefully continue to get better with each time I play a round here (because I definitely plan on returning). There is a lot of potential with this property and I think they already have a great course with room to improve. Nice work!

Holy elevation 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

I don't do reviews often so go easy on the votes, but I had such a different experience than the other two reviews that I felt like I needed to write one.

I am not really sure where to start, but this course is going to whoop your butt from a physical stand point. You are walking up and down some crazy hills. It took me and 2 friends (965, 964, 900) over 2 hours to play one round today. I will admit that we had a hard time finding a couple tees, but there were signs with arrows pointing the direction you needed to go for the next tee on every hole. Sometimes for the longer walks there were multiple signs making sure you were still going the correct way. In regards to the rough, we had to look for 1 disc in the rough today the entire round so the fairways are more than fair and you shouldn't really be in the rough on too many of the holes. If you don't know how to throw down a hill, I could see you getting in trouble, but this course is clearly designed for advanced to open players. They are also still working on the course. We ran into two guys widening one of the fairways who works at the facility who also mentioned that they are planning on adding short pads next summer. The turf pads were also really nice and was my first experience using any sort of turf pad.

I am not going to go into every single hole, but two of the more memorable ones were one that had a creek running through it with two bridges you needed to cross to get from the tee to the basket and the other was one that was so downhill I feel like you could have thrown a brick and even though it was 350'+ away, it still would have made it there. I don't know how anyone who loves this game wouldn't love the challenge of throwing up the hills and the joy of throwing down them and watching your disc soar.

Cons:

As mentioned above there was some times that you had some pretty long walks between holes so that is always a con. I also would have loved to see the course be even longer. There is so much land and yet there is only one par four. This could have been a crazy championship level course that something like the toboggan only could have rivaled. Maybe some day. My last con is you keep seeing these amazing views and you see the open ski runs, and you never get to throw a 1000' downhill bomb. We ended up throwing a couple extra shots down to 18s basket from 17s pad because that should be the final hole.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I loved it and will be coming back for sure. It is more a destination course than a course that you will be able to go play on a Wednesday night. You are going to be out of breath, sweaty, and sore when you are done, but you are going to love the challenge and the uniqueness that this course has from anything else in the area. There is no way this course is anything less than a four.

Challenge, Elevation and Woods 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

A variety of shot shapes, uphill, downhill, wooded, left and right, etc. It offers a unique shot selection when compared to most of the Madison area courses, especially regarding elevation. The DGA Mach VII baskets catch really well, favourite basket yet. It sports great views of the surrounding valleys and the calm quietness of being out in the countryside. There's also food and drinks at the bar for after you finish your round.

Cons:

The rough is really rough and punishing, which goes with being a new course. There are blackberry bushes and prickly ash in a lot of spots, which will tear you up if you're not wearing long sleeves and pants, as well as plenty of wild parsnip lining the fairways in spots. There's also quite a bit of walking between some of the holes, which leads me to wonder if some of the holes could have been longer, or they could have made it a 24 hole layout with "holes between holes".

Other Thoughts:

The beginning of the course is a three-hole hike up the hill, this course definitely requires a decent fitness level to play the whole thing without getting drained. Hole 18 has a really cool downhill shot but you have to choose between two 6 foot gaps off the tee. I'm sure the course will continually improve over time, so go out and try it!

Summer time cash grab 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) It's a disc golf course.
2) Very nice views from the top.

Cons:

Unfriendly staff there to happily take your money but could care less of why your there. Hardly anything is mowed. Impossible to find tees and baskets. No hole 4 to speak of. Absolutely no signage directing you to the next tee, and most holes are not even remotely close together.

Other Thoughts:

I know it's new, but this "course" is a mess. The course itself is either hardly mowed, or not at all. I'm all for a good hike, but walking up a 45 degree incline on rutted ground in knee length grass isn't my idea of a great disc golf experience. The gentleman at the bar was all too happy to take our $5, and when asked if they had a map he said no. Lo and behold I found the maps as we were leaving. Thanks for that. When asked where we actually start, he just waved a hand and said "It's just out there on the sidewalk".

Tees are nowhere near the last pin. We had to basically wander around until we stumbled (literally) across the next tee pad. On some, you have to walk all the way down (or up) a ski slope to actually find the next tee. Walking up un-mowed, steep hills on rutted ground, someone is bound to twist an ankle. No signs at pins directing you to the next tee. Us, and the two groups behind us couldn't find the tee for hole 4. I've played a course on a ski hill before and generally you throw across the steep incline rather than up it. The laminated paper signs at the tees vaguely point out where the baskets are, but you come across other baskets on the way and baskets aren't labeled with hole number.

Grass is so long you can actually lose a disc on the fairway, and this was opening day. And heaven forbid you put one in the rough. The 45 degree slopes covered in trees and thorns are so thick you'll be lucky to both not fall or find your disc.

I appreciate the little bit of effort this took to make a course, but it wasn't a LOT of effort. Being opening day, one would think that grass would be short, signage would be everywhere as no one will have played there before. But no. This course needed to not be so rushed to open, especially if admission is charged on day 1. It was clearly not finished. My buddy actually talked me out of going back in and requesting my $5 back. All in all, this just seems like a rushed, poorly thought out course, in an effort to get a little summertime revenue for the ski hill. If this is what we are to expect from this course going forward, there will not be much of a draw as word of mouth is powerful in the discing community.
