Worst 18 hole course I've played in WI 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Scenery from the ski hills is spectacular
- Plenty of parking
- Most of the fairways are wide
- The course features a lot of length for players looking to really unleash their drives
- Tee pads are artificial turf on top of concrete, definitely quality. Baskets are just fine, too.

Cons:

--> Way too easy to lose a disc. If you throw it so much as 3 feet into the brush, you will be lucky to find it. The brush needs to be cut back, particularly for a pay to play course. Many holes have steep drop offs that are impossible to fetch a disc. I came home with scratched legs, knots in my clothes, and sore ankles.
--> Terrible layout. The land is great, yet they chose to create a course that goes up and down and up and down. Having played courses on ski hills in the Twin Cities area, this pales in comparison. Many holes begin hundreds of feet past the previous basket; they could have fit 36 holes in the space they fit 18. There is nothing recreational about it, it's exhausting just to walk the course. It's easily a 2 1/2 hour round.
--> The course is not groomed. I played during the first week it was open, when the grass was "cut", and spent too much time looking for discs right in the middle of the fairway. I also stepped on a bee hive in the ground. And the walkway down the 9th hole is actually dangerous. It's too steep; someone is going to get hurt. I am especially disappointed because this is a pay to play course; I expect better when I'm charged to play.

Other Thoughts:

I live on Madison's west side, and I am a regular at Elver Park and Capital Springs. I play all of Madison's courses, and enjoy driving to Janesville, Rockford, Milwaukee, the Twin Cities and Northern Wisconsin to play, too. I don't say this lightly, but this is the worst 18 hole course I have played, by far. I eagerly waited for it to open, seeing as it is only 20 minutes away. I can't really sugarcoat this, I thought it was terrible and I will not be back. Unless you are a real professional, I wouldn't recommend it.

Summer time cash grab 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) It's a disc golf course.
2) Very nice views from the top.

Cons:

Unfriendly staff there to happily take your money but could care less of why your there. Hardly anything is mowed. Impossible to find tees and baskets. No hole 4 to speak of. Absolutely no signage directing you to the next tee, and most holes are not even remotely close together.

Other Thoughts:

I know it's new, but this "course" is a mess. The course itself is either hardly mowed, or not at all. I'm all for a good hike, but walking up a 45 degree incline on rutted ground in knee length grass isn't my idea of a great disc golf experience. The gentleman at the bar was all too happy to take our $5, and when asked if they had a map he said no. Lo and behold I found the maps as we were leaving. Thanks for that. When asked where we actually start, he just waved a hand and said "It's just out there on the sidewalk".

Tees are nowhere near the last pin. We had to basically wander around until we stumbled (literally) across the next tee pad. On some, you have to walk all the way down (or up) a ski slope to actually find the next tee. Walking up un-mowed, steep hills on rutted ground, someone is bound to twist an ankle. No signs at pins directing you to the next tee. Us, and the two groups behind us couldn't find the tee for hole 4. I've played a course on a ski hill before and generally you throw across the steep incline rather than up it. The laminated paper signs at the tees vaguely point out where the baskets are, but you come across other baskets on the way and baskets aren't labeled with hole number.

Grass is so long you can actually lose a disc on the fairway, and this was opening day. And heaven forbid you put one in the rough. The 45 degree slopes covered in trees and thorns are so thick you'll be lucky to both not fall or find your disc.

I appreciate the little bit of effort this took to make a course, but it wasn't a LOT of effort. Being opening day, one would think that grass would be short, signage would be everywhere as no one will have played there before. But no. This course needed to not be so rushed to open, especially if admission is charged on day 1. It was clearly not finished. My buddy actually talked me out of going back in and requesting my $5 back. All in all, this just seems like a rushed, poorly thought out course, in an effort to get a little summertime revenue for the ski hill. If this is what we are to expect from this course going forward, there will not be much of a draw as word of mouth is powerful in the discing community.
