A Top 10 GA Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 7, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- REVIEW UPDATED 10/22/16: 3.5 to 4.0

- fun park style par 60 blue level course

- adequate parking, bathroom, water fountain, and two pavilions near Hole 1

- brand new DISCatcher baskets, concrete tee pads, LOTS of "next tee signs" painted blue and very visible, LOTS of trash cans (especially on the back 9)

- essentially two 9 hole loops that start near the parking lot

- numerous styles of holes are present: open, wooded, "parkable" par 3's and multishot par 4's and one par 5 ... most are very well designed and a handful of alternate pins have been designed, good potential for alternate pins on several holes

- good use of elevation throughout course

- the course rewards good shots, and punishes bad shots

- The amount of work put in by the Parks & Rec dept. is quite noticeable and appreciated. The greens on holes 3, 10, and 16 stand out due to placement of boulders to create elevated greens (3 and 16), and an island green created on 10. Several natural and wooden bridges were created, and a tiered stone steps to the tee on hole 5. Several fairways and greens were seeded and have thick grass growing presently which is quite nice aesthetically. (UPDATE: much of the seeded areas didn't take, so they aren't lushly green anymore ... maybe they'll try again in the future? not a big deal honestly)

Cons:

- The angle that 18's teepad faces is to the alternate pin. It's not ideal for the original pin, and wasn't the planned direction for the pad, but it is what it is. Not ideal, but not terrible. Can be confusing for first time players without a guide. Wouldn't mind seeing the cedars being trimmed back a wee bit that create the gap to the original pin.

- Hole 15 is an uphill wooded dogleg right par 4. The short pad is a tweener par 3.5, but with a distinct line and fairway to hit. The long tee is ~200' behind and slightly right of the short pad, playing from the woods on the opposite side of a power line right-of-way. The tee shot is less defined from the longs and seems to be a "poke and pray" RHBH that tries to penetrate through to the defined fairway that is playable from the short pad ... or is it a tight RHFH flex shot? It's possible some trees might still need to come down for this hole to be what the designer was envisioning.

UPDATE: several trees and a large branch forcing a low line were removed and a landing zone for RHBH/LHFH was created, RHFH/LHBH have a clean flex line to the top of the hill ... now 15 is one of my favorite holes

- I'd like to see the alternate pins get used more :)

Other Thoughts:

- overall, a VERY solid course and VERY good quality for such a new course

- my cons are rather nitpicky honestly

- Not a true destination course to plan as the sole focus of a trip, but still one of the top ATL courses.

- a great start to disc golf in Spalding County ... it laid the groundwork for the Dundee Lake course being put in and at least one more course in the Griffin area, if not more.
