If you're in the area, this course is a must 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 21, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-This course utilizes elevation changes well, and the holes are quite varied and interesting
-The basket locations are moved frequently to keep the game fresh
-This is the place in the area to drop 400+ foot bombs
-Aces are difficult, but possible and very rewarding

Cons:

-The signage is still not quite up to date, but if you play it once, you will not have a problem with organization
-At times the course can get muddy (the drainage here can be an issue)
-Because this course is one of the best in the area, can be quite crowded. Try this course early in the morning or later in the evening

Other Thoughts:

-By far my favorite course in the RDU/Chapel Hill area
-If you aren't totally confident that you can throw over the water on hole 3, don't try. That lake eats discs

Best in the Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 9, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

On the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill. Well groomed course, very clean. Grass is always mowed and there are trash cans at most tee boxes. Benches at every hole.

The best layout in the area, by far. Built around the Old Finley Golf Course on campus, there are everything from epic bombs to tight technical shots. Water in play on #3 is more of a distraction, but the pond will eat plastic. Distance and accuracy are both required to score well. Long layout has 650'+ bombs (#4) and 200' technical shots (#16, #17). Use of elevation and the existing ball golf course are phenomenal. Very picturesque.

Signage is pretty good, hole #, distance and diagram for all, although the baskets move every now and then on some holes and that isn't always reflected.

The Carolina Disc Golf Club of UNC-Chapel Hill also do a lot of work and upkeep on the course. It's always in great shape.

Cons:

Parking - the only place to park during most hours is behind the Admin building on Raleigh Rd, near #8 and #9. All Permit Required lots are monitored. Hole #1 is near the Outdoor Ed Center lot, down the hill and to the left.

Not the easiest to navigate your first time out. The tee signs are good but some of the "next hole" directions are kinda vague. From #5's basket head to your right down the path and then fork left. Go under stone bridge and #6 will be in front of you on your left. From #18's basket, head right down the right hand side of the upper tennis courts, #1 is just past the big sign in front of you.

Some of the baskets are mis-numbered and in bad shape so it can be confusing for first timers. However, there are only a couple places where you can see two baskets from the tee, and the signage at the box is pretty explicit as to which is which.

The field that holes #6-#8 play around gets very wet and muddy after rain.

Restrooms and water at the Ed Center, but course is one long loop so no mid-round trips to the car.

Other Thoughts:

Course can get crowded, but that's just a testament to it's design and reputation. A must play if you're in the Triangle area.

Best Hole - #14, 410' bomb over a huge valley. Too much fade either direction and you can end up off the fairway and scrambling for par.

Most Fun Hole - #5, 371'/444' One of the old golf holes, plays from an elevated tee box over a dry, overgrown, creek bed to a basket tucked back in the middle of the old green. RHBH hyzer bombs...

Awesome Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 21, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Concrete Tee Pads, multiple hole layout (water hole, wooded, open, long, short), DISCatcher Baskets, Handles large crowds well, Good clearing in woods and good mowing on open holes. Holes in woods all have clear defined fairways. Although most holes baskets are directly in front of you they require different styles of throws to twist through the trees.

Cons:

Some holes heavily wooded which makes finding discs difficult. If not first time playing here, could be challenging to navigate between holes. Some holes are tucked away in woods after being in open fields such as #7 or #16.

The course has a tendency to stay pretty damp on certain holes, even after light rains.

Other Thoughts:

Very good course, challenging but fun.

Two places to park, you can make a left off of 54 towards Chapel Hill into the Softball field enterance, or up by the Law School for UNC, parking at the law school requires a long downhill walk and hole 1 will be on your left. If parking by the softball field you can start on holes 6,7,8 or 9.

Just played on 6/2/09 and they have made some changes to the course. Hole 8 has been extended and is now a dog leg right. They have built a nice wood bridge to cross over to the new tee for hole 9. The 9 tee box had not yet been poured but I would assume will be soon. It is now more of straight on but with a tight path.

Heel me 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 15, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It's always fun to play here because there's so much variety! UNC has just about everything you could want in a course. There's great variety of terrain from wide open crush shots over manicured grass on former golf fairways to very tight woods shots that demand lots of accuracy. (Terrain: 8 Woods holes, 2 Open, and 8 Mixed.) There's water with a drive over a small pond on hole 3 and a creek around the pretty peninsula green on hole 8. There's also excellent length variety, with two long legitimate par 4 holes mixed with shorter very tight holes. (Length: 3<199/ 8 of 200-299/ 4 >300/ 2>400/ 1 of 666 ft.). There are also elevation changes on almost every hole (8 Up/ 9 Down/ 1 Flat) and a good mixture of left, right, and straight fairways. Put it all together and you've got up, down, wide open, very narrow, straight, sharp doglegs, a little water... They've got the basics covered well too. Some tees are trapezoids and some are raked concrete. Some tee signs have maps. There are even lots of benches and a few trash cans. No wonder they've been able to build a strong college club!

Cons:

The course flows well so it's pretty easy to navigate, but there's a long walk to tee 6, and tees 7 and 16 are up paths that could be hard to spot. Also, 8 baskets are hard to see from the tee so they'll need a little scouting.
*If you don't have a parking sticker parking is difficult. It's best to park down near hole 8 and start there.
*The online map and score card need to be updated on holes 1-4 to incorporate the newest layout.
*With all of the changes to the course layout some of the baskets aren't numbered correctly so this can be confusing to first timers. The new holes 1 and 2 also need better signs.

Other Thoughts:

Course Level: White (most suited for Intermediate players rated 900.)

My favorite hole- 14. It's just pure fun to rip a full power shot over the valley and get lots of extra D because it's downhill. Just don't turn it over into the woods on the right because it can be nasty thick in there.

They seem to like variety in the course design too, because over the years this course has had more design changes than any other course in the Triangle. But the changes have usually been improvements, and it continues to become more challenging. Now the course is the best it's ever been. All of the changes can make it hard to keep up with the latest layout, though. This was my home course from 1998-2000, so it's always fun to go back to. I'd highly recommend that you play here!
