The Campground Dog Stole My Heart. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 21, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.963 Rating) An open and longer than normal 9 where you can do a wake board heelside 540 while looking for all your lost discs.
- CHALLENGING - Anyone who gets kicks out of throwing over the abyss will get several adrenaline rushes. There is a lot of water in play here and it plays a central role in 3 or 4 holes. The winds are likely going to be ripping here due to the open terrain and thus the fear of losing one in the never ending water element may start to dictate shot choices. I played very tedious on 4 tee shots as I had to deal with 15 to 20 mph gusts. I eventually lost one on (5), and I was trying to be safe with the throw. I think the course skill level wise is ideal for both upper Rec and lower Intermediate. Advance players should murder it on calm days and Novices will be overwhelmed on windy days.
- TEES AND CHAINS - Not even a month old by my play and big pads were already poured. I measured one of them at 5-feet wide and 11.5-feet long. All of the pads are currently in perfect condition. Nice DISCatcher baskets as well.
- VARIETY FOR A NINER - There's a 800 foot par 5, which is definitely not a typical thing among niners. Oddly, no par 4, but there are three other holes that are over 300-feet long. As alluded to above, lots of water, and it will force shots to be planned a certain way to increase the survival rate. Hole (7s) basket is located in a storage container, but it's presents was rather meh imo. Overall however, I did score this aspect a bit below average among all courses. The theme of water and openness occurs far too often imo.
- CLUBHOUSE AND EXTRAS - Disc golf is not the main draw here, but rather the bonus activity. The property is mainly a wake board facility and it has a large clubhouse serving this function. Inside there are bathrooms and discs to purchase. The compound also has camping areas for those with RVs or even tents.
- LACY - My daughter and I were instantly joined by a random dog on tee (1). Her name was Lacy, and I think she was either a black lab, or a lab mix. She was super attentive. She could do the typical dog tricks like lay down and shake and she was a joyful tagalong for our round. When I threw a disc into the water, she actually dove into the water and attempted to retrieve it. She was the kind of dog that made me wish I had a dog myself.

Cons:

Overzealous design
- LOST DISC POTENTIAL - Water comes into play 8 times on this very open and flat landscape. New players are going to lose plastic here…a lot of plastic. As noted above, I lost one on hole (5) while being extremely cautious with my throw, but the wind had other ideas. Losing a disc and the thought of losing a disc, kind-of sucks the fun out of the course.
- FLAT AND OPEN - It is what it is. These aspects limit the dynamics that were achievable. On a rare calm day, the play will be extremely boring on several holes. Just chuck-it said distance. While on windy days it will be a quest to keep all your discs.
- HIGHWAY EYESORE - I-75 is directly adjacent to the east border of the course. There is no buffer other than a 100 foot open field. Seeing and hearing the constant zipping of cars and trucks is not a pleasantry. Because of this, I scored the course beauty attribute below average.
- NAVIGATION AND SIGNAGE - I gave the course credit for tee signs despite them not being installed yet. The guy running the facility this day, said they were coming soon. The navigational aspect was passable the day I showed up. It's entirely open, so players will be able to see many logical transitions, but not all of them are logical. Players will need a navigational app until this aspect gets finished off. Again, I did not take off points for this, considering the course's youth.
- SKILL LEVEL FRIENDLY - Not Beginner friendly, not Novice level friendly, marginally Rec friendly and too easy for Advanced level and above players. The current course dynamics appeal to a very small niche of players imo. This is a real problem.
- SIGN-IN - The most time consuming waiver process I've ever encountered. It almost took ten minutes and I read very little of the fine print. Had I read it all, it may have been a twenty-minute endeavor. I probably signed a kidney away for all I know. I don't take off rating score for this, but it was a pain to complete.
- DRIVE WAY - The access to the compound requires a one-mile drive down a gravel and dirt road.

Other Thoughts:

A difficult course to rate due to its youth. I could see Trusted Reviewers rating it between a 3.0 and 1.0 based on what I saw. In addition, I could also see the course becoming super eclectic like the rest of the compound and get further investment and become an even more intriguing play. However, I could also envision it being abandoned. I guess time will tell. As is, with crediting the forthcoming tee signage I'm going with a solid 2.0 "Reasonable." Bombers should like it a bit more, and Novices should stay clear. For those traveling along the I75 corridor, I'd recommend Freedom Park first over this one, especially if you have the time.
