I Found That! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 21, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's an addiction. I'll admit it. I probably have a problem. Driving down the road, I spotted new baskets in a field and made a u-turn to circle back and check it out. Good thing I had my trusty 'in case of an emergency' discs with me.
- This course was brand new. The posts only had hole numbers written in pencil on them. The local DGC (the fun, underrated Indian Land DGC), specifically the local school course designer, had no clue about this course. And yet, with my dog-like sense of smell, I was able to find the newest course in the ground.
- What I discovered was a simple, open school course. Unlike many of them, this one actually had a smidge of bite to it. They weren't just pouring catsup on their food here. Rather, they snuck in a little hot sauce.
- Holes #1 - 4 play in an open field. #5 & 6 play behind the school. And #7 - 9 play on the other side of the building. Once signs are installed, this will be an even easier course to navigate.
- Field for #1 - 4 gives you more room for tee shot practice. More than 500 feet from the road to the woods. More than 600 feet if you're angling around the corner.
- #5, 8, and 9 are the holes that 'require' shot making. These are the three holes that aren't wide open shots. All are pretty easy, but a shot straying a little far wide can be big problems. On #8, you have a fence to the left of the fairway and wood to the right. On #9, you have woods to the left and an OB road to the right.
- This is a birdie fest for more experienced players. Lots of potential ace runs. But even for the ones you're not parking tee shots, you should still be having birdie putts. My only non-birdie putt was on #3 as I was off in my blind estimation of the hole length.

Cons:

First and last holes are on opposite sides of the building. So, there is a long walk to or from your vehicle one way or the other.
- New course issue alert. Course was missing everything but baskets when I played. As mentioned, tee posts simply had numbers written in pencil on them. # didn't have any tee markers. This could already be a non-issue. This could be an issue for months. I played the course blind and it only added a couple minutes. You can too.
- The only possible confusion is for the baskets for #8 & 9. I played to #9's basket from #8 tee at first because it was not completely clear which basket I was playing towards. No issue. Picked up my disc and played the hole correctly.
- There is not a single obstacle between tee and basket on any hole. Your danger is having a throw get too far wide or having a disc landing on a road/go OB. You're not that far from the hill / OB road on #1 or 9 that a guest of wind, skip, or roll can add a penalty stroke. Take that away, I'm not sure how you can realistically get a bad score here.
- No amenities for non students. Also, there are multiple signs across the campus saying equipment (playground, course) are unavailable until 6pm on school days. That's later than most schools, but don't abuse this and cause problems.

Other Thoughts:

If you live in metro Charlotte, you should know by know there are an abundance of school courses in York & Lancaster counties. York County actually has more courses than Mecklenburg (Charlotte) county. I've become Pavlov's dog and am trained to expect a new course whenever a new school is built in York or Lancaster counties. And that is why I was eyeing for baskets when I drove by here. You're welcome.
- For a simple course, for a course with 4 holes sharing the same wide open field, there was surprisingly a varied flow to the course. #1 is uphill. #2 is slightly downhill with a slight dogleg left. #3 is straight while hugging a tree line. #4 is wide open, slightly downhill. Four holes. One field. Yet each hole plays different. Nice!
- All your base are belong to us.
- For not disturbing nature / cutting down any trees, this course did as well as a simple, open course can do. Compared to many school courses, I think I would enjoy having this layout at a school near me. Although, I don't think I would want to live on a 4-lane highway and actually be across from the school.
- That said, with the woods and hills on the campus, there is the potential for a much better 9 hole course. I know it'll never happen. Just saying.
- This is a good 1.0 course in my book. About as good of a 1.0 as you'll play. I'll never head out of my way to intentionally play here again. But, if I was close by and had time to kill, I would definitely huck some frisbees here.
