Look for Hilliard’s “Municipal Park”

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Dean Barbo and team has worked with the folks at Roger Reynolds (the old name for the replaced nine holer) park to expand their existing course to a rambling 18 hole course consisting of dual tees and baskets on just about every fairway, resulting in a course that will likely satisfy players from Recreational to Advanced skill levels. Hole distances and lines of flight range from 170' to 401' from the short tees, and 211' to 567' from the longs, and incorporated open, tightly wooded, and curved shot requirements. The course seemed to slightly favor shots that fade right to left (which suits the largest population of players, statistically), as the course roams counter-clockwise around the entire perimeter of this large, multipurpose park (there are ball fields, ponds, a water park, playgrounds, tons of parking, etc. etc.)

Brand new discatcher baskets and decently sized, level, flush-mounted concrete tees and excellent signage (at the short tees) make this a solid course in terms of infrastructure. After starting out with seven park-like holes well maintained by the general park staff, the middle section of the course tend to play slightly shorter but includes a good amount of technical woods and water challenges and gut-checks. One of the prettiest holes has got to be 15, where the challenge from the long tee is to throw cleanly to the short, and then over the corner of the pond to a beautiful basket position beside a couple of trees and boulders.

In all, the course is greatly expanded and improved, making it one of the better tracks on the eastern outerbelt of Columbus.

Cons:

Don't expect elevation, even if the hole listings here are marked that way. No hole has more than four or five feet of slope, though the best is probably the little rise knoll tucked into the corner before the marsh on 11. Maybe hole 1 from the long tee does slope down a little more. DO expect some significant walking between holes (600' between 7 and 8, 400' from 14 to 15 (short), and again from 16 to 17. Though I used the map, I kind of expected to see some 'next tee' indicators where it's not obvious. Eventually, I noted that information may be on the previous tee signs.

Oh, and the signs are going to need revision to incorporate alternate pin locations (as early as hole 2, I noted the 340' I paced out was not quite the 228' indicated on the sign!) I noted there were no signs yet at the long tees, but they really do not appear to be played yet, either, as the rough is not cleared on the fairways from the long tee in numerous places (especially long 4). Also, it may have been due to recent summer storms, but the wooded holes (8,9&10) were choked with underbrush and debris. I don't mind the tight wooded lines, but have always felt that discs landing inside circle 1 should be easily found).

There were a couple of places where I felt the design lacks safety considerations, mostly around the ponds (holes 12-16), where the fairway is the walking clearing alongside the scenic water, and you might not see a 'civilian' before you throw. The most concerning to me was the ace run hole 13, where the basket is alongside a heavy, tall rough (left side) in the summer, and the paved path encircling the ball fields is a place where someone on a bicycle could easily pop out from the left just as your disc arrives on the green.

Other Thoughts:

I arrived along the north side of the park using Scioto Darby Road, and kept looking for a street sigh for "Veteran's Memorial Drive". Never saw that. Just turn in at the sign for "Municipal Park". Speaking of which, "Veteran's has already been used for a disc golf course, in a town that starts with the letters h-i-l-l-, no less. Perhaps the course could be listed as either Roger Reynolds or Municipal, though I suspect the latter has also been used a few times on DGCR.

Awesome alternative to some stale courses in Columbus. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 16, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Long and short tees are all concrete now.
Mowed frequently
Water holes, wooded holes, tunnel shots, and extra challenge if you treat roads and paths as ob.
Bathroom and water fountain in the rev building here.
Also, this is a full park, so if the family wants to play on the play place or use the ponds to fish or swim in the community pool or even play around on the soccer and baseball fields you can get a round in while they do.

Cons:

Hole to hole navigation gets tricky.
Distance between holes can be large.
A fair amount of non golfers around, I don't think I ever had to yell fore, but there is some time spent waiting for paths to clear for a throw.
As a new course, there are areas of rough that just simply haven't been touched by a human in, like, ever. I've noticed some little paths starting to form as more people use the place and lose discs in similar spots, but there are still areas where your disc will never be seen again.

Other Thoughts:

Honestly, numbers are so sticky for course review. Some tiny 9 hole courses are perfect when you have one disc and twenty friends. Those same people would absolutely quit after playing somewhere pro level.
This course is a 4 to me (I'd say 3.75 but rounded up) because any group can find something to love here. The pro tees aren't 1000 foot holes, but we say we throw 500 online and in practice we throw 300 when we really rip one. There is enough mix to require accurate shots and thoughtful golf, the area is so nice to walk or use a cart on, there are in door bathrooms and vending machines. Dog friendly (leash required though) and mowed frequently.
Now the tees all have concrete pads for both tees, and I assume signs are coming for the long holes, there are trash cans, large open fields next to many holes where you could get field work in, and, unlike many multiuse parks I've played in, no one looks at you funny for throwing frisbees. They know what's up and they are happy to see you in the park.
I honestly find this course to be a great alternative to Griggs or OSU and great for small groups or even solo.

Veterans Memorial - Ever Improving 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 13, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Roger Reynolds Park has multi uses , including a pool in the summer months , fishing , ball fields , and even a garden ( ? ) Even though recent construction is claiming some of the parking spaces , there is still a good amount at the first tee . There are bathrooms not far from the course , but I think those are only available during the summer . There is , however , a Port O Let behind the 7 basket that services the soccer fields . I played the old Roger Reynolds 9 hole course a few years ago and was not impressed . The course has been large sized to 18 holes , and more of the park has these holes spaced out better .
-- THE EQUIPMENT -- There is a nice kiosk near the parking lot with a large map of the course . Print it before playing . You will need it . There is also a putting basket on the small hill near hole one . The course presently has one set of 3 1/2 X 8' cement tees . They are presently getting ready to pour cement for a set of pro tees ( the wood brackets and some fill are already at the pro pads ) . The tee signs are on wood posts and are nice , giving hole # , par , distance , and flight path .The baskets are Yellow banded Discatchers and in good shape .
-- THE LANDSCAPE -- The course is very flat . I doubt that any hole has more than 2 or 3 feet of deviation from the tee pad . The course mostly plays park style , but with some added woods holes from #8 thru 10 . If you like water holes , there are several holes which come into play .
-- THE HIGHLIGHTS -- I played all of the course from the present cement , , 4463' total . I can't wait to come back and play the pro tees in the future . The better holes here were :
#11 There is a large tree with spread out branches in the middle of the fairway . Unless you want to try a roller underneath , it is a wide angle right to left around the tree to the basket , on a small hill just in the woods .
#12 has a row of trees and fairway brush on your left , and water on your right . You can angle a right to left midrange throw just over the water to the basket , set between the brush and water .
#15 is the most picturesque hole here . It is a short water carry over part of a lake , with 2 large boulders on the green
-- SIGNATURE HOLE -- #14 401' , With brush and trees on your immediate left the whole way to the green , the more open right cuts down to a small path about 150' from the tee . The rough is very high on the right as you have to make sure you stay on the path the rest of the 250 ' to the basket and small green .
-- THE TIME -- The course and its grounds are both popular and there are some long walks between holes . It took me 85 minutes to play the course on a Sunday afternoon . A foursome that navigated this course can be done in a little over 2 hours from the short tees .
The Fun Factor was pretty high when I was here , and the locals are friendly enough to help you out with navigation .

Cons:

#1 Safety - Some of the holes play close to shelters or park enjoyers . In the spring to fall months , you will have to play through or around people fishing . A couple of the holes are close to the road . The last hole is very close to a fence line of a ballfield . Try to give the right of way to the non players .
#2 Navigation - Yikes ! Without a map or a local to follow , you will wander this park aimlessly like a lost zombie . Let me try to help . After hole 5 , follow the brushline that is on the left of the hole ( as you threw down the fairway ) The tee pad is hidden in the front of a garden . The transition from 7-8 involves a walk down the path to the right of the hole , to the only Next Tee sign direction you to #8 in the woods .14-15 is a long walk down a path right next to the lake . Next Tee signs are a must here .
#3 DISC RISK - Medium to High Lots of water , lots of heavy brush Even from the short tees , you will have plenty of opportunities to lose discs , I passed a family that was hunting for a disc in high brush on #13 , where the wind blew it in , and the hole was only 170' . Use spotters if possible and weigh risks .
#4 Soggy - The grounds are flat and there is potential for muddy spots on the course . I would recommend waterproof shoes , or at least wearing old worn out ones . especially after rains .
#5 Lack Of A Good Finish - The finishing holes were almost anticlimactic . #16 was a little path shot next to the lake on the right , to #17 which is straightaway into a basket tucked deep into the brush . The weeds were so high going into the brush , I didn't even know that basket was back there .#18 travels along a baseball field fence line with the brush on the left . not eventful for a finishing hole .
Prepare for long walks from 4-5 , 7-8 , 15-16 and 16-17 .

Other Thoughts:

When I pulled up to the parking lot , saw the Roger Reynolds name at the kiosk , and remembered that I parked here 3 1/2 years ago to play the dinky 9 hole predecessor , I thought I was in the wrong park . Someone has since taken it seriously and arranged a solid 18 hole course . Course Designer Dean Barbo has done a great job with the redesign , making for a more fun and challenging round . As soon as I find out that the pro tee pads are in , I plan on moving the review score another half point .
MY RECOMMENDATION ---
I don't know if I would turn the course over to newbies or intros or park going families , unless they skip some holes . Many of the holes are still manageable for them . Locals should play here frequently . Intermediates and Ams will like the challenge once the pro tees are finished . This course might be a little light for the pros , but if local , they can still work on aspects of their game . Travelers might enjoy a fun round since it is just off of I-270 and I-70 . Course Baggers have a good time picking this course up and combining it with Pastime Park , Balgriffin, Indian Run and Glacier Ridge all within about 20 minutes of here . PLAY THE COURSE !!! and appreciate all of the hard work that went into it .

Veterans Memorial Disc Golf Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good variety of shots.
Good variety of terrains that require a lot of control and touch shots.
Lots nearby to eat.
Bathrooms in summer months.
Very cart friendly.
Longs are very challenging if the shorts are too easy.
Shorts and Longs are very different, not just longer versions of the same shot.

Cons:

Lots of water in which to lose a disc, requires control.
Shorts may be easy for better players.
Occasional pedestrians.
Some holes can be pretty wet during rainy season.
Could have more lefty holes.

Other Thoughts:

This course is evolving with new pin placements and cement for long tees going in Summer/Fall of 21. More improvements coming.
Overall a great, fun, and challenging course that you can either do well or bad on.

Stoked to be the first review for this course! First time I've had the opportunity.

This morning I decided to play the newly redesigned Roger Reynolds course. They turned it into a great 18 hole course with short and long tees as compared with its meager 9 hole beginnings. Note that I played from the long tees and so this review is reflective of the play experienced from these tees only.

The first thing I noticed upon arrival was the giant kiosk with huge color map of the course. Make sure you take a picture of this map or download the map from DGCR if you plan on playing the long tees, because they don't have signs yet for the longs and some are hard to spot because they have green turf tees that blend in with the grass. I didn't take a pic or download the map because I thought I could remember the map by studying it at the kiosk. That was not a good decision as it turns out.

Before I started playing, I took note of the fact that the short tees have generous sized concrete tees and nice color signs with a full color map of each hole along with distances and locations of both short and long tees. The baskets are my preferred Innova baskets with the signature yellow band, making them easier to spot.

Overall, I am very impressed with this course. There are some shorter holes and longer to way longer holes. There are tight, wooded holes and semi-open to open holes. There are even quite a few holes with water in play. The property is mostly flat. There are quite a few holes with OB in play.

I really liked the flow of the course and had no idea there was this much property here. It actually looked like there was even more property that could hold more holes.

Holes 1-7 are fairly easy to navigate and wind through semi-open to open areas. Holes 1 and 2 have water in play. Please note that hole 7's long tee is on the way from 6's basket to 7 short tee on the left side of the walking path. I missed it and, even after looking at the map on 7 short tee, couldn't find the tee for a bit. The shot from 7L is a fairly intense turn to the right to give you a perspective on where the tee is in relation to the basket.

After I finished 7, I had a hard time finding 8. Here's what to do...keep walking forward after 7's basket toward the paved road and follow the paved road as it curves slowly right, away from 7's basket. Once you've rounded the bend, look on your left at the wood line and you'll see a sign that points toward 8's long tee. It's just inside the wood line and you'll be shooting into a tight wooded hole.

Holes 8-10 play in the deep woods with tight lines. Hole 9 is fairly long with a narrow fairway. Don't go off line here or you probably won't get your par 4.

Hole 11's long tee.....Walk forward from 10's basket out of the woods and make a right. The tee is in between the road and the wood line and you'll be shooting toward the basket that's in front of water (not too close where it comes in play....just don't overshoot it too much).

Hole 12 plays tough! Water on the right the whole way with thick woods on the left of the fairway. The fairway isn't very wide either. I recommend throwing a controlled midrange to get you to around the small tee or a little after and then for the green thereafter.

To get to 13, turn right from 12's basket and hug the shoreline of the pond. The walk to 13 was muddy and uneven. Be careful not to turn your ankle here if it's muddy.

14's tee is in between 13's basket and 14's short tee. Follow the path to the left of 13's basket to get there. It winds around the outside of a fenced in field. 14L is a beast of a hole. Long and with a narrow fairway that funnels even tighter as you get within 150-200' or so.

I had a hard time finding 15's tee after 14. Once you finish 14, make a right and walk down toward the walking path that surround the fenced field. Once you get to that path, you'll be tempted to turn left because you'll see 15's short tee sign. Don't be a chump and fall for this....instead, you'll turn right and 15L will be to the right of the walking path.15 is a long ass hole. You'll need to play up somewhere around 15's short tee and then make a 90 degree turn to the left, shooting over some water to get to a beautiful green with a giant rock.

To get to 16, keep walking forward past 15's basket. You'll be playing another water hole. Beware....it is deceiving....there is very little ground to the right of 16's basket. I would play it a little shorter where it starts to get a little wider and take a longer putt; otherwise, you're risking losing one in the water for sure.

17 and 18's tees aren't too difficult to find. 17's is in between 16's basket and 17 short tee.

All in all, this is a great course and I would love to play it again. One thing to keep in mind as you play....this is a multi-use course. You need to keep your head on a swivel for runners, walkers, people walking their dogs and fishermen. I encountered all of these and I started at around 8am on a Saturday and only around 32 degrees. I can only imagine middle of the day and nicer weather!

Kudos to Dean and whoever helped....I'm assuming Columbus Flyers! Thanks for turning this course into a fun, challenging, great addition to the Columbus area!

I gave this course a 2.95 as averaged over all 5 critiqued areas. The long tees, navigation and signage took a ding bc they weren't up to "par" yet. I rounded my rating to a 3. In reality, once they get the tee signs and tees done on the longs, along with installing the alternate pin positions, this course will be a minimum of a 3.5 to 3.75 star course IMO.
