One of the Best in DFW 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 20, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A wide variety of types of holes that will challenge all players
Multiple basket locations for every hole
Excellent quality Veteran baskets
Well maintained by park staff and local club
Established local club and weekly tournaments and minis
Lots of elevation changes
Host of the VPO, so tournament and drone footage on YT is readily available to preview the course

Cons:

No use of creeks or pond in the park except for the additional temp holes put in around the VPO
Bathrooms almost always locked
Very difficult to walk on holes 4-7 after a rain
Hard to navigate the front 9 for first time players, use a local or maps/media on DGCoursereview before you play here.
Too busy for rec play on Sundays with the weekly tournaments unless you join, play very early or late.
Lack of any trees/obstacles on open field holes 12 and 13

Other Thoughts:

This is my favorite course in the DFW Area and I have played almost every course within 40 miles of it. I am biased as I played here since the 80s when it was a small 9 hole course, but it has evolved since then into a course worthy of attracting the biggest pros in the game for the annual VPO. It can be very difficult and frustrating for beginners to play here as there are several blind basket locations from the tee and the long fairways and hilly terrain can take a toll on you, especially on a hot Texas summer day. Minis are now well marked in blue for those who think some of the pro par 3s are a bit long for them or want to just change it up. Local knowledge is a huge plus for doing well here and Veteran's is one of the more difficult courses around. There are 3 tee locations for every hole, the standard longs marked with color signs and concrete pads, minis marked with blue painted logs, and unmarked or well hidden championship tees that only sometimes have a concrete pad. These tees only get signs in the fall around the VPO. You will need a local or watch a tournament video to find them otherwise. The baskets move between their 2 locations often and many will be blind from the tee, but you can usually spot the next basket on the walk up from the last hole before you get to the tee pad.

What a gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 4, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Too many to name. Good tees, baskets, layout. So awesome to find a course with that kind elevation changes in a relatively flat area.

Other Thoughts:

While my high score does not reflect it, this was by far my favorite disc golf experience thus far. I could see where this would be REALLY tough in the heat of Texas summer, and hard for someone who hasn't played there to navigate. Luckily I was with friends who had. It gets crowded so come early, even at 7:30 AM on a Sunday, we were one of 4-5 groups teeing off.

Pros:

Excellent layout with a nice mix of bomber and technical holes. The "grounds crew" does a wonderful job of moving the baskets to keep it from getting stale. Recent maintenance and trimming have the course in clean and pristine condition.

Cons:

None

Other Thoughts:

Bring bright disks and you should never have an issue.

Wonderful! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

I loved the challenge of this course. A good variety of uphill and downhill throws with beautiful views from the elevated tee boxes. Hard to believe this was once a landfill.

Cons:

- It is very likely you will loose a disc or two in these trees, bring bright colored discs!
- Each hole has 3 pin locations and they are all listed on the hole maps, but they have no system to indicate which of the pin locations you are using and it seemed to vary by hole. Had to do a lot of extra walking on an already long course to scout out where the basket actually was.

The Vet 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 13, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Veterans Park is one of my favorite courses in the metroplex, partly because it is my home course. The park has great variation of shots and elevation change. The new tees signs are amazing and many holes have newer tee pads. The walk through the park is a nice little nature hike and the scenery is always awesome. The Vet offers intermediate players a great place to hone their skills. And if played from the many champion tees can even give seasoned pros a run for their money.

Cons:

The only con about veterans is that for people playing there their first time it can be easy to get lost. However most of the locals will be more than happy to help new player navigate the course without getting lost. I myself have help many people get through the course. During the summer and fall it can be easy to lose a disc if your not careful but if you spend enough time looking one should be able to find it.

Other Thoughts:

The vet can chew beginning players up real fast until they learn the lines to throw. I have been playing Veterans for a little over a year just as long as I have been playing. And I have never broke even par on the regular tee layout. ( I have been close before) But if you learn all the champion tees and the short tees this course will provide plenty of new challenges and loads of fun for ever player level.

Great Course to hone your game 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 23, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Outstanding variation and need to utilize everything in your bag. Multiple pin placements make it never boring to re-play and the local club makes reasonably regular changes. There are bomber holes, technical holes, elevation both up & down, boles where you MUST hit the landing zone to make the 3, a couple true par fours when pins in certain positions, over the top holes, roller holes, birdie holes that are not "gimmes", and pretty much everything else. And if that doesn't hit your fancy are you play it often, learn where the championship tee boxes are for holes 1, 2, 5, 8, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, and 18.

Cons:

If you're not familiar with the course, it can be hard to find the next tee on 3-11, even with brand new accurate tee signs; the bathrooms by 1/5 and 15/17 are rarely unlocked; the up/down on 4 through 8 will tax you, especially on a hot day;

Other Thoughts:

Par 4 is more accurate on 1-B position, 3-C position, and championship tee's 1, 2, 8, 12, 17, and 18. New trapezoid tee boxes for about a year now have made a marked improvement. Ovcrall a great course with plenty of challenge. You need to score well to compete (stay under 54), but that makes every throw count here. YOu truly cannot afford bogeys and still score well.

Pain followed by pleasure 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 22, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course makes the most of what the park has to offer. Lots of elevation changes, the holes that cut through trees have decent sized fairways, and theres a tee sign at every hole. The back nine is excellent, playing up and down gentle hills making the most of every shot.

Cons:

The front half can be tough to navigate. Playing up and down hills that are a good hike, if you go the wrong way you end up backtracking uphill, and wearing yourself out even more. Hole 3 and 1 almost share a fairway, so if its crowded you could have problems. 6 and 7 run paralell uphill, so finish 6, go back down, throw and climb the hill again. Frojm there 8 is nearly impossible to find without help, go left and down the hill a way you haven't been, take a left at the path, and a right at the cutout in the rock.

Other Thoughts:

The front half was laid out well, but it was exhausting, and then we got lost so we walked more than we had to. The back half is one of my favorites in texas. The hot summer has made the ground very dry amd pacaked, its gonna chew up your discs, but you could get some good rollers. The open fairways and uphil shots make wind a real problem here.

My First Time Was Here 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 15, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

18 baskets. Well built tee boxes. Maps at each tee box. Amazing terrain. Tight shots in the woods to long drives in fields.

Cons:

None. Well, we did find what looked like an old bum camp and you can tell people have gone off into the woods to do things other than play disc golf. We didn't have any problems though.

Other Thoughts:

My first two rounds were played here. One throw and I was hooked. Once we got a few holes in, I had swallowed the hook. This place is gorgeous! Drought be darned. It's a forest in a city. We saw a real live roadrunner. There is some steepish walking to do in the woods. All the more fun. It's like hiking meets disc golf. I'll admit, part of my rating is due to being blown away by this existing in Arlington.

Challenging, but Rewarding 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great elevation changes. Challenging holes. Great scenery - Friendly locals (I had no problem finding someone to join with that knew the course layout). Great length and a variety of shots. I only carry 9 discs, but I used all of them. Easy to find the park.

Cons:

Only two: Very hot, with little shade - bring water when it's hot!
Can be difficult to navigate. Click the links tab and print out a course map.

Other Thoughts:

The most challenging course I have played thus far, which is good. If you are better than the course, you won't improve much. This course is better than most Disc golfers. I play close to par at other local courses (Bear Creek, Lake Lewisville). I played probably +18 here, although the first time on a course is always the most difficult.

Bring your big shot discs cause your going to need them. There can be a crowd of beginers to slow up your game at times. Also bring water when the temp is high due to lack of shade.

Veterans has it all 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 2, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Unique landscape, this course has it all!! here at veterans you have:

1. Monster Drives(1, 6,7, and the back side)

2. Short Technical hole(4,10,15)

3. Straight decent distance drives(2,11)

4. sitting on top of a perch throwing downhill ( 5 :)

5.Well you just have to play it :)

This course is so diverse, and is probably one of the best courses i have ever played at. From hole one(one of the most beautiful holes ever) you realize this course is legit. you have to you every shot you have. you have to bomb it out there, you have to hit holes, throw up hill, downhill, left doglegs, right doglegs, EVERYTHING. Even the scenery changes. you start off in a field at hole 1 and as you progress to hole4 the landscape turns into cactus and mesquites(like a desert) and the technical holes begin.then you have the elevation of holes 5,6 and 7 that come to mind( which is very rare in this area). then after 11 you begin the big open field drives where its nice to have those 400" drives(that i dont have) which seem like they would be easy, but with the big open areas wind is ALWAYS present. after the three monster holes you have on the back you come up to 15 which is a short ace run(which is always nice for the arm) and then 16 is a short right downhill dogleg. then to finish out the round you have two of the most beautiful holes in the park, a nice treat to end the round.

Well maintained and plenty of golfers to pick up a round with.

Minis every wednesday and sunday with good turnouts

Cons:

sometimes hard to find holes if its your first time. i would suggest finding someone who has played here often to help you out and show you the way.

Wow is it a walk...but hey thats part of it right, i guess im just lazy lol

cant think of anything else, what can i say this park is awesome

Other Thoughts:

always busy but the course is so spread out you usually dont have to worry about waits, usually.

very good club, very good turnout at minis, with some great competition

***update*****
as of 7/18/09 a couple baskets have changed pin location for the "fling"...some of these holes are hard to find so i figured id try to help out a little bit.
hole 1 is closer to the field now, still tucked away in the woods but only half the distance in

hole 2 you will see after leaving hole 1, pin is now on right side of fairway

hole 4 is now on top of the hill to the right of the tee pad. short 130' thumber or anny

hole 6 is straight ahead in the short

hole 7 is deep straight and to the left

hole 10 is still on top of the hill straight ahead, just about 50' closer

hole 18 is now on top of the hill to the right instead of straight ahead.

What a great course!!! Incredible mix of terrain and elevation changes! You go from a semi desert type terrain to a more green park like setting. Great concrete, tee pads, good signage, great mix of short technical holes and long wide-open stuff too!!! Friendly locals, both DGer's and others just out enjoying the park. I played this course with most of the leaves and vegitaion knocked down in the winter, I can only imagine how the level of difficutly grows when this course is fully vegitaged!!! Awesome course one of my new fav's!!! Will definately be back!!!

Cons:

Only real con I found was in navigation from the #6 basket to the #7 tee... We found it after a bit but a little point in the right direction would have been nice. Also noticed a bunch of broken glass throughout the course... probably wouldn't recommend playing this one in flip-flops...

Other Thoughts:

Unique landscape makes the course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2007 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Like others have said below, the landscape in the park is quite varied and has a very rugged/hilly area that's unusual for the DFW area...lots of red-dirt, rocky hills and cacti.

Plenty of shot variety....long/open, short/tight, giant downhill/uphill and everything in between. Through the course of a round you're likely to pull out every shot in your bag.

The landscape is such that it naturally splits the course into a few distinct sections...1 and 3 are in a slightly hilly and grassy area, 4-7 play through the rocky and extremely hilly area, 8-11 or 12 play through a moderately wooded area with some slight elevation changes, the next several play in a flat/open/grassy area before going back to the moderately wooded area.

Many very unique holes...1, 6, 7, and 18 (in the hilltop position) come to mind. Also, several have multiple pin locations.

Cons:

A few of the concrete tees are a bit short/narrow and have a decent drop-off on the sides.

I think someone said this below, but some of the baskets seem small or too low to the ground.

For me, the biggest Con are the flat/open holes on the back 9....it seems that holes could have been designed in a more interesting area of the park. There are 16 really fun/challenging holes...and then 2 that are wide open field shots...pretty boring.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of the most popular courses in the DFW, and for good reasons! Every time I've played the course it's busy but not too crowded.

The local club is very active, and has gained a lot of notariety for the Veteran's Park Open (VPO), one of the state's richest events.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 8, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has a very high fun factor due to the varitey of holes and the use of many great elevation drops.

The course is beautiful due to it's hilly terrain and large number of trees.

There are multiple pin positions (...but see con #1).

It has concrete teepads and a practice basket

When you get tired of the trees the course opens up with about four holes out in an open field so you can really air out some discs.

Cons:

1. You may have to walk ahead on a few of the blind holes to find out which pin position the basket is in.

2. The lack of shade, especially on the open field holes, make this course not as fun in the midday summer sun .

3. First timers may have some difficulty locating the next tee pad on a few holes.

Other Thoughts:

It is a fun memorable course and I highly reccommend it. Just make sure you don't park in the wrong parking area like we did and walk around for thirty minutes looking for hole #1.

Hard course for the best only 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Veterans Park is a terrific course. The variety that Veterans Park offers is terrific because it demands that you are proficient in all shots that are in your bag. The course is just the right balance of difficult par 3's and some easier ones to bring the people of the metroplex out to the course. I enjoy the fact that there are alot of holes that are unique and you cannot find them anywhere else. Veterans Park is loaded with disc golf tradition and is one of the pioneering courses in the North Texas area.

Cons:

In the summer the heat can be brutal and sometimes holes 4-7 can be a beast. Lots of locals call it the desert.... It is not very barren but just alot of elevation changes and sometimes it gets a little too frustrating for the beginners and casual players.

Other Thoughts:

Forget what the guy said about Veterans being overrated and all that trash..... Sounds like someone that shot a few too many bogeys and double boges. If you want to develop all the shots that the game asks for.... come to Veterans. Even the convenience stores locally have AWESOME discs to choose from.....

Point is Veterans is AWESOME....

Dare you to play it
