Hop on the Wabash Cannonball...

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

...and ride right on by Wabash Park. Unless you are a local, looking to stretch your legs in the middle of a long road trip, or a degenerate course bagger; Wabash Park doesn't have much to offer.

With nice teesigns, concrete tees, and aging discatcher baskets, equipment is really the only highlight.

With par 3s ranging from sub-200' to nearly 240' plus the nearly 500' finishing hole, there's some distance variety in the 6 holes.

Cons:

This is a pretty bland, totally flat, park style course without many trees. The hole with the most defined fairway is number three. The problem is that it's defined by street parking on the right, a skatepark on the left, and school parking long. The basket is wrapped around the corner of the skatepark, and the sign warns you not to just throw over top of the skatepark. Seems like a lot can go wrong here in only 160ish feet.

The course is split into 2 three hole sections separated by tennis courts and baseball fields. The transision from 3 to 4 is pretty intuitive, but there isn't much payoff for the added walk.

Hole 6 is listed as a nearly 500' par 3. Considering that it's twice as long as the next longest hole on a course otherwise scaled for beginners, this doesn't make much sense. Clearly, this is a two throw hole for the intended audience, and I hope most play it as such. Anyone with the distance to birdie has no business playing the rest of the course.

Other Thoughts:

Not much more to say. I'd be out here all the time if I lived in Rantoul, but just because it's the only game in town. There aren't a ton of other choices along I57 in central Illinois, but I don't expect I'll be playing this one again.
