Traveling Review 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 28, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Concrete tees in good shape. Short, but easy to run up from behind if needed most places
- Great signage and navigation (big if you're traveling) including a next tee marker on the baskets
- Baskets are in good enough shape
- Elevation gains and losses
- Chances to air out drivers and the need to thread a few down wooded fairways
- Benches scattered throughout
- # 9 was a great hole. OB surrounds tee shots and green.
- Turf maintenance was fair to good in early summer

Cons:

- Largest con is the state of the rough. It encroached on too many fairways and basket positions. On multiple holes penal rough was less than five feet surrounding the basket. A lot of shots had to be choked off for fear of losing discs.
- Only one lay out and only one hole that wasn't a par 3
- Not every shot is needed, it was a lot of throw a hyzer, take a putt (although it could have been a forehand or backhand hyzer...)
- The holes by the river with the berm seemed like a missed opportunity. Maybe there were design restrictions, but that berm should be incorporated and it seemed like a place to add a little distance and dramatic elevation.

Other Thoughts:

A fun little course, it was a nice detour while driving across the state.
Ease of navigation made it more fun than if the holes had been the same, but in a more confusing order. There was little back tracking and I only had to go spot a few baskets prior to my drive.
Overall an easy course, good for most skill levels.
I would describe this as 'decent/typical' but the state of the equipment and navigation bump it up to a three. Major brush removal and extending holes would be needed to improve beyond a three though.
I disagree with a previous reviewer and actually felt the front nine was the more engaging nine, save a brief stretch on 7 & 8. Different strokes, right?

Uninspiring front 9 leads to an above average back side 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 11, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fremont, Ohio. It's my first ever trip to this blue collar city of 15,000; train horns and loud factory work filled the air on a nearly silent winter evening almost the entire round. Walsh Park sits on the banks of the Sandusky River and spans across 51 acres of land. playgrounds, ball fields, and a popular sledding hill headline non disc golf related activities.

+ I love the main concourse area. A pavilion, 2 basket practice area, huge parking lot, a drinking fountain, and plenty of trash cans. Only thing missing is a restroom!

+ Great tee signs and concrete pads on every single hole. There's tape on the bottom of each Mach II basket to make navigation as simple as possible for the most part.

+ The back 9 was pretty fun at times with the exception of a couple duds. The stretch of 14-17 provided short ace run potential with some danger involved. #18 is easily the signature hole. 350' downhill off of a drop off to a lightly protected basket.

+ Both nine's make two loops back to the parking lot.

Cons:

- If I were to rate the front 9 individually, it would probably get a 1.5 or 2.0. It's mainly predictable and pretty wide open. There's a few short ravines in this stretch that try to play as hazards but they're really just an annoyance more than anything.

- The baskets were in decent shape, but they're just an older model so they won't catch as well.

- Some potential was ignored on #14, could have been a much better hole. I'm thinking move the tee to the top of the hill, and shift the basket closer towards the water. Would make for a more fun hole in my opinion.

- Rusty fence runs along 16 and 17 with private property on the other side. Very easy to get a bad kick off a tree.

Other Thoughts:

The back 9 really saved the day and bumped the rating up significantly. There's some fun wooded holes there with some more elevation.

Side note 1: There is a steep trail up the cliff behind #14's basket. If you're adventurous, there's a clifftop trail along the river. Very scenic, but dangerous in spots!

Side note 2: According to a plaque hanging on the course map, the course record is 45 set in 2017. Congrats to whoever pulled that off!

I Was On Pace To Break The Course Record And Then I Played # 2! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Walsh Park Disc Golf Course is located in Veteran's Memorial Park. This is a very large park with wide open green grass, some hills and some pretty thick brush and forest areas. The park has picnic pavilions, rest rooms and a popular walking path which seems to be everywhere.

The course which starts right next to the large pavilion, has a small kiosk with map. The teepads are newly poured concrete. They could be a little longer. The nice colored tee signs cover all the basics, hole #, distance, par, map and the next tee arrow. Each hole has a sponser. Some of them remember a loved one passed. The baskets are Mach ll's.

There is a sign below the course map stating that "King" Darrick Gorenflo holds the course record with 10 under par 45. Now Germany had their King Ludwig, we in Seattle have our king, "King" Felix Hernandez and I guess Fremont has their "King" Darrick. Speaking of the King's record, I threw in about a 75' pitch on hole 1 for a birdie. I thought for sure I was going to break the King's record but then things went to hell quickly and I ended up about 10 over. No record for me!

The course is fairly long in places, open on some holes and very technical in other places. This makes for a nice mix of throws and skills needed to score well here. # 3 is a fun 453' throw downhill to an open basket. # 8 is interesting at 297' with two good sized trees lined up directly in front of the basket giving you either a left or right route to the basket. # 9 is 600' and there is a ditch running the length of the hole to give you trouble. # 14 is another interesting little hole at 297' but you have to miss the power poles and the support wires which are both in your line.

Cons:

I didn't like #'s 15-16-17. They're all three short little Ace runs around 200' but they three play down a narrow path and # 15 especially, has nasty rough and a ugly, drop off on your left the entire length of the hole. I really dislike holes which play down paths or roads.

The grass was about 6" on most of the course. But in defense of whoever is in charge of the mowing schedule, it has been rainy as hell lately.

Concrete pads could be longer.

Course could be muddy and probably slippery in places during rains. Some steps would be nice on a couple of holes.

Lost discs are a definite possibility on the wooded holes.

Other Thoughts:

I liked this course but could have liked it much more if not for three factors, none of which are the fault of the course. Just my bad luck, I guess. My rating will be fair but my memory here might be a little tainted.

1. The grass was 6 inches high and very wet at 7 am. The grass is high because the mowers haven't been able to mow lately because of the rain and the grass was wet because I chose to play very early in the morning. My shoes and socks were soaked after about 3 holes.

2. I noticed some mosquitoes about the 9th hole. As I was applying my repellent, my little bottle ran empty. My mistake. When I got to the wooded holes starting at # 15, the little bastards were swarming me. I basically ran through those three holes trying to outrun the pesky mosquitoes. They chewed me up something mean.

3. I failed on my attempt to break "king" Darrick's record. Well, basically because I suck.

Pleasant Surprise 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 3, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

1) Concrete pads
2) Tee signs
3) Most holes allow for a decent lefty or righty throw
4) Elevation changes
5) Highlight hole: 9

Cons:

1) No diagram of hole on tee sign
2) Only 1 set of pads
3) Navigation issue from 4-5 and 5-6
4) Course map on bulletin board is upside down
5) No trash cans on course (not a biggie for me though)

Other Thoughts:

Wow, what a little gem in the middle of nowhere. This is probably the best 9 hole course that I've ever played. Good property with elevation changes and scenic views of Fremont and the Sandusky River.

The course is a little bit harder than a beginner course, so it has some challenge to it, but it's not so hard that a beginner wouldn't enjoy it. Hole 9 is an amazing ace bomb from up on a hill shooting down to the ground.

My main complaint is that it took us a few to find hole 5 and hole 6, although the different colored pointers on the basket cages led us in the right direction, so it wasn't a huge deal. If you download or print out the map before you go, you'll save yourself 5 minutes or so.

Overall, I am thoroughly impressed with this course and will return. I hope they make it 18 holes someday. There's a bunch of woods to the right of hole 6 that would be great if the park owns it.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 30, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

• Nice mix of open and tight, woods holes
• New tee pads and Mach 2 baskets
• Good signage and next tee markers are accurate
• Not Very Busy
• Real elevation, which is rare for DG in these parts

Cons:

• Could use benches.
• Course is muddy in the spring

Other Thoughts:

Fun, intermediate, challenge in a nice park. The brush on a couple holes can be thick. I almost listed this as a con, but this is DG, so test yourself. Concrete tee's are adequate for the distances. The use of elevation is enjoyable and not overwhelming or ridiculous. #9 is a great downhill bomb 370 feet or so, and is an awesome way to finish the round.
