Waneka Lake, Bagged & Tagged 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Adequate baskets, though single-chain

-Nice concrete tees

-Kiosk w/ map near 1, signs are A+ - very informative w/ skematic and OB info, course is relatively easy to navigate w/ updated map I uploaded

-Nice for a quick round, ace runs on some holes, good for beginners

-Restrooms on the west side near 8 & 9

-1 & 2 complement each other well. They're longer shots for the course, w/ 1 being a nice 400'+ RHBH and 2 following up w/ a fun RHFH

Cons:

-Does not play a loop - I'd suggest parking near 8 & 9 on the west side so you don't have to hike back to the other side of the lake when you've finished

-Doesn't flow very well: After #1 you have to walk a ways to #2 which then shoots back towards the way you came. Then there's a long walk between 2 & 3, and then again between 7 & 8.

-tee signage doesn't face direction of basket on several holes - not a huge con but always throws me off for a second

-Holes 3-7 seem a little cramped w/ potential for crossfire, and a couple holes play near the street which can be distracting.

Other Thoughts:

Waneka Lake DG was a nice quick bag, despite the gaps in flow. It plays around part of a small lake that seems used quite a bit by the locals. There were people fishing, swimming, and walking the track around the lake when I played. As such, you can have a few distractions while you're playing, though the other park users don't seem like they'd get in the way much as the course is kind of crammed into some unused space on the east side of the park.

I feel like if they were to switch #1 & 2, while also switching the direction of 1, the flow would improve greatly on the front 7. 3-7 are rather one-dimensional and forgettable. If I remember correctly you can get by w/ RHBH's on all of them. 8 would have to be the signature hole, having you shoot toward a basket that's situated among some large lava rocks. 9 plays back the opposite direction from the rocks, which add a little diffculty as you have a large one right in front of the tee blocking your view of the basket completely, however, there's no real obstacle past it so it's a relatively safe blind shot.

I may not go out of my way to play here again but it's not a bad 9 hole course; I think it'd be cool if they were allowed to bring the lake into play somehow though, the only real view of it you get is if you walk up to it before/after the round.

Strange hole set up 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 14, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful park
Some very cool holes (1, 8, 9)
Not crowded

Cons:

The course did not really follow a clear pattern. The course map is not accurate. There is no west course as far as I could tell.

Other Thoughts:

This is not an "efficient" course, but it was fun to play. Hole 8 was very cool with the hole placed within lava boulders.

2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 2, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- concrete tee pads
- good tee signs and a course map at the parking lot
- there is a good variety of distances on the course ranging from 200 to 450 feet

Cons:

- baskets are old and are single chained
- the layout is very spread out and somewhat silly, the first two holes are way to the right of the parking lot. Then you walk back down the fairway of 1 to get to 3. Then holes 8 and 9 are a long walk away from 7. Which puts you a long walk away from the parking lot
- the course is mostly open and most shots are boring

Other Thoughts:

This course has some fun shots, I think if I lived in the area I would just play 3-7 for a real quick round.

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 9, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Design used what obstacles were there well.
Good place to practice your disc finding skills.
Good place to work on form.

Cons:

Tall grass (waist high) eats discs.
Other users out there can slow down shots.
Proximity to parking lot and road on holes 3/4 can be sketchy, I caught the wind wrong one day and almost nailed somebody's windshield.

Other Thoughts:

I live about 2 blocks from the course so I do at least a quick run of the course most days. I stopped throwing holes 1 & 2 after I stumbled on a rattlesnake looking for a Valkyrie... Too many lost discs and not enough reward for those 2 awkwardly placed holes. I respect that they were laid out to avoid throwing discs into peoples homes. Hit the course earlier in the season before the grass grows.

Boulder County Locals Site 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 21, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good Practice course, proximity to local amenities, fills geographic gap = middle between West - Valmont; North - Loomiller/Clark Centennial; South - Interlocken for Boulder County area discers. When fields are mowed very nice not spending time beating the tall grass for your tee shot (as of Sept 2015) excellent after school or work rounds, does not take long to play the 9 holes. I generally just play 3-8 in a confined quad a couple of times. No. 1 offers length and only bomb flight at Wanaka with a fine BH RH approach with low hanging Oak branches to negotiate. No. 3 while easy, short offers a narrow approach with 'member's bounce' feature for a right side miss; no 4 plays longer than the actual length, gradual uphill with prevailing cross or headwind breeze with large tree obstacle protecting it from an easy 2. Nos 5 and 6 are longer but straight without obstacles, 6 features an elevated basket adding a touch of thought to your putt. No. 7, is shorter with a protected pin placement, nice highzr practice to fade/drop just past the bush. You can trek along the lower path onto No. 7 or take the high road along the lake, nice views of the front-range and take note of all other offerings at Wanaka Lake. Nos. 8 and 9 tend to be more challenging for accuracy but good flyers will handle with focus. No. 9 pin is elevated. No. 9 finishes at the west parking area, can park here and take short walk to No 1 as to finish at the main park area. Proper bathrooms in the lake house during summer. Catch some shade under large oaks and shelters. Excellent sunsets most nights after your twilight round.

Cons:

Not much to sniff at unless you are prone to bashing entry level sites. I learned to play here over the last couple of years and being local, live just blocks away, am partial, because I love the game and am grateful for the resource and the practice. However I've played a number of courses with high marks along the front range and will accept that this is not a destination course for the serious player, although I have seen a number of excellent flyers here doing their due diligence. Major con is: there are social and established walking paths that cross the fairways or are very closely adjacent to almost all fairways. The other park users of the open space are prone to be willingly oblivious of your presence on the tee pad. Caria Street runs along No. 6. I'm BH LH and have held my breath in horror as my errant bee flew over and under passing cars. The prevailing breeze pushes the flight toward the street. Just take a look before you toss. During the mid-summer months the grass gets VERY deep. Fairways are mowed but not in a manner that helps much. I've been having a ball in the off season while the grass is low. The distances shown on the markers are not true, figure 30 ft. shorter overall. Better use of space and planning at the outset would have prevented removal of original No 3. Missed opportunity for elevated tee shots by not including lake path for a tee pad.

Other Thoughts:

Planned construction of back 9 is in jeopardy due to public backlash against reckless flyers. Please tread lightly, we want this course to remain. Cheers

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 3, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

They should have 18 according to the site soon(2015 summer would assume that is now or shortly) flow from 3-7 is nice easy to locate your pin from the signs on the post.

Cons:

Grass looks like it may have been mowed at one point this season, easy to lose a disc, the back nine is still not open for play, the lake while it is there, isnt even close to being in play or a threat to your disc, poor use of space, and tee one goes way out to two then way back to reach hole 3.

Other Thoughts:

i think with proper course management, and the addition of the back nine this could be a "nice" course, but i dont see it happening.

a decent start 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-great concrete pads, nice signs, new baskets
-makes good use of the few trees available
-mowed fairways
-two elevated baskets to liven up otherwise bland holes
-plans for a back 9

Cons:

-pretty boring design, not much to work with on the land
-tall grass off the mowed fairways, they should just mow it all
-long walk back to the parking lot after hole 9
-will be an even longer walk back to the parking lot from hole 18 when the back 9 is finished
-distances seem off on the signs, the holes look shorter

Other Thoughts:

Waneka Lake is in a park that surrounds a large lake (surprise!) but unfortunately doesn't get to make use of that awesome obstacle. The water is lined with pedestrian trails so fairways over the water is a no go. The course does make use of the empty areas around the edge of the park.

The fairways are mostly just strips mowed out of the tall grass fields. A few strategic trees are used near some baskets to create an obstacle or force a landing area in the green. I would rather see all the grass mowed as tall grass is not a good obstacle for a disc golf course. It just makes finding your disc a pain.

Overall, this is a decent beginners course. It's a great place to teach people the game and that's probably good for a small town getting it's first course. I'll be curious to see how the course looks after the expansion. Experienced players need not bother, course baggers only.

So far so good... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 27, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Disc golf in Lafayette!
- Great boxes, nice signs, decent baskets
- Unique elevated baskets on some holes
- Beginner friendly
- Drive down Emma and hit the Post after your round for great beer and fried chicken

Cons:

- More or less a pitch and putt with the exception of longer holes on 1 and 3
- Accuracy required especially on hole 9 or you could wind up in someone's back yard
- Tall grass surrounding fairways eats up discs
- Distances on signage inaccurate

Other Thoughts:

Way to go Lafayette for finally getting a course! I'm looking forward to the back 9, which should prove a little more interesting and challenging. This course has been quite busy since it opened so it may not be the most exciting course but it's put together well and fun to play.

Mostly Short and Open 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 14, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Brand new, descriptive tee signs, with a colorful map of each hole. They all have OB and other obstacles clearly marked.
-Long, concrete tee pads on every hole.
-A few elevated baskets that make that last putt a little more challenging.
-Mowed fairways through the super thick grass that rewards accurate shots down the middle (also a con in my opinion).
-Smart design to keep discs and play away from the public and the houses that surround the course.
-Big, colorful course map can be found near the start of hole 1.
-There is a really cool wooden sculpture found in between the tee pad for 6 and 4 (not really disc related, but it's sweet!).
-Most of the baskets seem to be brand new, and two are double chained.

Cons:

-The majority of the holes are wide open, straight shots, only a few holes have trees/bushes/other obstacles protecting the basket.
-The hole lengths are a bit exaggerated it seems, hole 3 especially comes to mind. Marked as 445', but feels much shorter, probably closer to 400'.
-A lot of the holes are around the same length (280' - 320'), and since they're mostly wide open, you'll find yourself throwing the same shot over and over.
-There are a four holes marked as "par 4's" out on this course but in all fairness, they should all be par 3's.
-There are some incredibly thick weeds throughout the course that can make finding your disc very difficult. It really would be much better if they clear cut all of the long weeds. It doesn't make the course any more challenging, and it can be very frustrating looking for a disc that wasn't even that bad of a throw (off the mark by only 15-20 ft).
-Lost discs in the tall grass will discourage players from coming back to play this course again, there is no need for it.
-Single chained baskets, with small cages. Only two holes (those that are elevated) have double chained baskets with large cages.

Other Thoughts:

The first nine holes put in at Waneka Lake play as more of a "beginner" course, and are similar to other courses in the area, mostly short and wide open. Holes 1, 5, and 8 are the only holes with any real obstacles guarding the basket. Make sure you are throwing all bright colored discs, otherwise you could easily lose one in the outrageously tall weeds.

What I expected 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Full 9 hole (soon to be 18) in Lafayette. Baskets are bright yellow and easy to spot. They mow the fairways. Holes 7 and 9 are elevated, making the approach more difficult

Cons:

Short course, the signs state distances that don't seem correct. The fairways are really narrow and one can easily end up in some thick weeds and have to look for your disc for awhile (especially hole 1).

Other Thoughts:

All in all the course was about what I expected. Not the best or worst around town, but I will probably only use it to play a quick game before sundown.
