Pretty Typical for SD 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 13, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Good for a very quick 18 or for teaching beginners the game. Many ace and birdie ops.
-There are a decent amount of trees for a little challenge.
-The signage at the start and on each hole is good. I never was confused about which hole to aim at or where the next tee was. Solid layout in that aspect.
-Port a potty near the parking lot which is also quite adequate.
-The park looks nice, is mowed well, garbage is picked up, etc.
-The tee boxes were good, plenty big
-Baskets were nice and in good shape
-A few benches.
-The course loops around and both the front and back 9 start and finish at the parking lot.
-There is a decent variation of distance on this course.
-You probably won't have to wait long or at all to play this course.

Cons:

-There is a zoo nearby and those animals (monkeys?) were going nuts the whole time. I was actually annoyed by the end of the round.
-The wind can come up and be vicious, this course is somewhat protected but not that good.
-There are a surprising number of places to lose a disc on this beginner type course. The river borders a few holes and the ponds are kind of in the picture with an errant throw. You have a better chance of getting your disc out of the river. It is pretty shallow and clean. Still, be careful if you need to go in.
-The course simply isn't much of a challenge unless it is really windy. You can shoot a two on any hole if you can throw far enough. Many holes only required working your way around one or two trees. Not a lot of shot shaping required. I only remember one hole where there was a specific shot required to get to the basket. It was a right curving hole around some trees at the end of the pond. In the middle of the back 9.

Other Thoughts:

-This course is pretty typical of what you might find in South Dakota at a city park. It will be nicely funded with nice baskets and nice tees. This one is sponsored by Slumberland so they had nice signs as well. However, the land is ok. It is pretty open and they didn't use the water as much as they could have. I would have shot over the river once or twice. It wouldn't have been a huge hazard, just a more scenic and interesting hole. Overall, I did have a decent time at this course. There were a few ace runs to keep me entertained. Also, who doesn't like to shoot a ton under par? It's a feel good course for sure. If you are going north on I29 you should stop and play here because there isn't much until Fargo. If you are heading South and have limited time I would recommend Larson Park in Brookings or Tuthill in Sioux Falls. A little of the interstate is Big Sioux in Brandon.
