9 Holes Forward And 9 Holes Back Again. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 11, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.802 Rating) A private moderately wooded course with several multi-play holes.
- HOLE VARIETY - Driving into the property, I was expecting simple holes with minimal distance variation. To my amazement, this was not the case at all. Yes there are a couple holes like that of which I just described. But there are also multi-play dogleg holes and some technical woods play. I really liked hole (8) which played uphill slightly for a couple hundred feet, and then it doglegs left for another 125 feet or so down a 30 foot wide fairway flanked with pines on both sides. I also liked (18) as well, which was very similar to (8), but it doglegs right.
- NAVIGATION - There's a mailbox by (1) with scorecards and maps. The map is very accurate, and I used it often. Tee locations are marked with an engraved paver. A couple pavers took me 25 seconds to locate.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - Not super exotic, but not too shabby overall. The course plays around the We Care Center which itself was built in a 15 acre planted pine enclave. Hole (4) was my favorite looking line as it felt the most detached from the built environment to me. There are some small access roads in play and a building or two can be seen often, but I think the abundance of pines and minimal open space helped with the overall natural appeal.

Cons:

Only one group can play safely at a time.
- LAYOUT FLOW - This is about as bad as I've ever seen. After getting to hole (9), the course plays in reverse. This is going to cause all kinds of issues if multiple groups are on the course. Thankfully no one was here when I played it, and it's likely also a low traffic course. In addition, the junction holes (6-8) and (11-13) feel chaotic.
- SAFETY HAZARDS - I've seen much worse, but having to wait or electing not to play a hole may occur due to a parked vehicle near fairways on a couple holes. On tee (11) on my play, I had an RV that was reachable for me to hit on a bad throw. In addition, a couple structures can be hit with grip-locks and there are property access roads in play a few times.
- TEES - Like many newer courses the tees are below average being just natural ground. No tee lines as of my visit. I also thought that a few baskets were too close to a few tees.
- CHAINS - The baskets are homemade, but actually look very respectable for something that doesn't have a brand name attached to it.. There is even a set of inner and outer chains and they seem to catch discs well. The part I didn't like was the basket cage. The spacing on the wires is about 2 inches too wide. Thus, every putt I made, I was rewarded by having to then scoop my disc off the ground. It probably needed six cross basket spokes instead of four. Hole 5/14 only had a target for my round as the basket had just been struck by a tree. I was told it was being repaired.

Other Thoughts:

I called in to make sure it was ok to play and I talked with Jonathan, whom I assume was greatly involved with getting this course put in. He told me it was no problem at all, but just to check in, in the office before starting. I ran into him as I was finishing and in that short conversation, I could tell he was an exemplary individual who was extremely proud of the course, and he should be proud. There are definitely some intriguing shots out here and hopefully he(they) can score another 9 baskets to clean up the layout bottlenecks. The properly is 15 acres, so it seems like the room for more holes could be there.
- PAR STRUCTURE - I don't take points off for this, but the par structure is set up for novice level players or perhaps even beginners. There are five par 5s, and all of them would be Rec par 4s. A couple of the par 4s would also be rec par 3s. I'd personally label it as a par 61 for Rec players.
- TIME PLAY - Average. 53 minutes for this solo player on an empty course.
- CHALLENGE - About average, perhaps slightly below. Ideal for Novice and Rec players. Ok for some beginners.
