Wells Branch

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 3, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

-- Fun is difficult to quantify, but this course definitely hits it for me. Shorter holes where you can ring up birdies (and aces), but you can get into trouble. No. 9 is about 150 feet but uphill with water behind it. Twelve is about 220 feet downhill with water left/behind the basket for a RHBH throw. I played too safe on 12 and left myself a 20 foot putt. I clipped the basket with that putt and watched in dismay as my disc wobbled all the way to the water.
-- Tee pads are exceptional. Long and wide but not a traditional rectangle.
-- Tee signs are detailed and have all of the needed info.
-- Excellent course map and practice basket.
-- Seating at all tees.
-- Maintenance seems outstanding.
-- Excellent bridges to cross the creek.
-- Almost all tee pads and fairways are shaded, much appreciated in the Texas heat.

Cons:

-- Navigation/safety. The map and tee signs help but not enough. The trouble starts with the transition to 3 tee, which has you walking past the 4 basket. Next you have to approach the 4 tee from 4 basket. After 11, you have walk past the 12 basket to reach the 12 tee; then you head back to the tee because 12 and 13 share a tee. No. 16 also requires walking by the basket before getting to the tee. And 18 finishes more than 500 feet from No. 1.
-- A walking path comes into play a lot on 3-4 and 11-12.
-- Parking is on the street. Considering how popular the course is, this can get quite crowded.

Other Thoughts:

-- If you have a big arm and like to use it, you probably won't like this course.

Recreational Course Extraordinaire! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 29, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wells Branch Park is a lovely park with a creek running through it. You're right away impressed when you drive up and see the wonderful disc golf map and sign. It's set in a nicely landscaped circle that also holds a bicycle rack. The park is very conveniently located just blocks from the interstate.

There is a practice basket near the sign. The tee signs are amazing. They are nice sized, colored metal ones which are securely mounted on a granite block. They are visually attractive, probably vandal proof and informative. Any course, I've ever seen would love to have these signs. The baskets are another story. They are the strangest looking Discatchers I've ever seen. They're patriotic dark blue and red. One set of chains is red while the other is blue. And the catcher basket is a little more shallow than others. I forecast a few putts falling out. They worked fine for me as my attempts were mostly airballs. The tee pads were circular in shape and reddish color. They were unique and one was shared by # 12 & 13. I don't that's an issue at all.

The course itself is just north of being a pitch and putt making it an easy recreational course with it's plethora of fun Aces Runs. It seems as though every hole is aceable but I remember a few that would be tougher. Only # 1 is over 300'. Eight play in 200' range and the remaining nine are sub 200'. Although short, many of these little Ace Runs require some shot shaping. #'s 8 & 9 and are both fun little annies and easily aceable. # 12 has the possibility of skipping in an ace off the sidewalk while 13 is a fun throw to the basket In the trees.

There are one hole where the basket is just 159' dead ahead but the reason everyone seems to love this course is it's variety and interesting and somewhat challenging Ace Runs.

Cons:

The baskets won't win any basket beauty pageants.

Recreational distances. If throwing big, booming drives is your thing, then Old Settlers or North Town might be better course choices for you.

There's a possibility that you'll put one in the creek. They're pretty easily retrieved.

Navigation might be iffy your first time through. I was lucky to be guided by, Eddie, a fairly new player who is finding this course to be the perfect course to kick start his disc golfing career.

Other Thoughts:

It's awesome that Austin has this great mix of courses ranging from beginner to advanced and from Wells Branch's recreational length to Old Settlers professional distances. I know if I lived here, this would be the perfect course for my weiny arm and overall recreational game. Who knows, I might even Ace a couple of these behemoths. Most reviewers mention the number of players who frequent this course. That truly speaks to the appeal of Wells Branch. It's just a very enjoyable 18 holes of disc golf nirvana.

Beginner Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 1, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Good pin placement relative to course length
- Enough tree's to provide some technical challenges, in spite of putter-only length

Cons:

- Nearly all very short holes
- Layout is extremely tight at times

Other Thoughts:

With a couple exceptions, this is an extremely short, beginner / casual course (*much* more so than e.g. Zilker). If not for pin placement / tree's, a putter would be all you need. I used putters and my Firebird (short flex or flick hyzers) for all but 2 shots.

pretty, fun beginner course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 20, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good club presence. Friendly locals, gets a lot of use, well maintained. Great use of trees to make a short course interesting. Good sineage, cement oval? tee boxes. Pretty, lots of shade. Trash cans available, bridges placed in good spots, overall.

Cons:

Holes are close together. This is really only a problem on a few. #12 aims right back at #11's basket, and 12 and 13 share the same tee. This should be fixed, but beyond that, a great, short corse.

Other Thoughts:

Obviously not a championship course, but it is a great place to bring the spouse, family. It has short holes on most, but basket placement makes it more challenging than the distances would argue. Nice job overall in a tight spot. Love the shade. In TX, that's a real plus!

Great neighborhood course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Now that the tee pads are finally all in, this is a really nice course for beginners to intermediates. It's quite easy, but all the holes are reasonably fun to play with at least some degree of thought required - no silly novice-level stuff like Block Creek or Our Savior. There's a decent variety of shots. Every hole is definitely birdiable for intermediates to advanced players. The secret "pro" tees on some holes add a little difficulty but really not very much. It's not a championship course, but there's nothing wrong with an easy but well-thought-out course. I have fun, I get a lot of birdies, it takes about 90 minutes, and I'm not physically and mentally exhausted like with some of the other courses.

Twenty years ago, this was a nine-hole course on the north side of Wells Branch Rd, which was the first course I ever played. While at the time it was great since there weren't any others up north, it was actually pretty awful - most of the holes were terrible, and 7 had a giant disc-eating pond on the left side just waiting for a skied hyzer. I've really been happy to see the changes - I feel like the course has grown up just like the sport itself.

Cons:

No clue what's going on at 11-13. 11 and 12's baskets are right next to each other, and then 12 and 13 share the same tee box. Just kind of ridiculous. I think the problem here is that 12 is where a hole on the old course was, so they figured they'd keep it, but it really should just be taken out and put somewhere else on the course, with 11's basket taking 12's basket location.

Nothing they can do about this, but the creek is annoying because it has very steep sides, approaching vertical in some locations. 8 in particular has a six-foot-deep trench with completely vertical sides running right across it. If you don't have a grabber of some sort, you pretty much have to get in the creek to get a disc (and it is deeper than it looks usually).

Wells Branch Redesign 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 9, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Mainly flat with a creek that runs through the entire course. Variety of shots needed to score well but you don't need a big arm. Great course for Intermediate and Advanced players to tune their game. Fairly shaded as well.

Cons:

Dirt/Mud tee boxes make for some tricky tee shots. There's not a lot of distance and for an Open player, double digits on the scorecard is very attainable. The baskets are high quality but their painted blue and red reducing visibility. Walking trail throughout half the course also makes for some distracting shots

Other Thoughts:

This course has recently been redesigned and improved. The distances listed on DGCR are inaccurate because of this - it's a bit longer and tighter than what it was. Always enjoyable if you need to get a quick round in.
