Better than puberty, but just barely

Pros:

West Middle School is located near Portage, MI. There is a nice, big, open field behind the school that looks like an inviting enough place to throw some discs. If you follow the UDisc layout, you'll start by throwing from home plate of a baseball diamond. Then you can play basket to basket, or just safari style it between them. The baskets are generally located 300'-400' apart, so there is plenty of space for rec level players to practice drives. Wind could be a factor on some days as well.

Haha yeah, that's all I got for Pros!

Cons:

This "course" consists of nine numbered Gopher Sport QuikShot 10-chain portable baskets, set up so that you can throw at them counterclockwise around the field. These baskets do not catch discs at all. It's basically like playing pole holes because if you don't hit the pole, the chains are not going to stop your disc. Actually, I'd say these baskets are MORE challenging than pole holes since here the disc has to not only contact the pole, but hit it directly enough to also fall into the basket afterwards.

All other course infrastructure that I normally mention does not exist. Actually, that's not quite true. There IS a porta potty and it's literally 3 feet behind hole 9's basket. I had to imagine middle school kids laughing and chucking discs at the porta potty to startle some poor unsuspecting soul in there.

A tennis court could come into play on holes 6-7. In general, this is a multi-use area so although all safety issues are line of sight, it's possible that non-DGers will impact your time here.

The field is flat, with basically zero obstacles to work around throughout the entire course. It looked like there were actually some trees and rolling hills in the back of the field past the tennis court, but the layout doesn't reach those areas. Why not use that terrain to try and make a more interesting layout?

Other Thoughts:

This is just nine crappy baskets in a wide open field. I considered handing out my third 0.0 rating here, but in the end decided that there is enough for a "low" 0.5. This is the sort of 0.5 rating that makes me feel bad for Kalamazoo Central HS, whose course I also rated at 0.5 a couple weeks ago.

I think I may have actually been more inclined to give the 0.0 here if I were a better disc golfer. You see, these "holes" are long enough that I was throwing my driver twice on most of them. If we assume all holes are par 3, that meant I needed to get close enough to the baskets in 2 throws to basically not have to putt (because the baskets likely weren't going to catch my putts). Between a couple of chainouts and a couple of poor drives/approaches, I ended up taking bogies on four holes. If I were to return here again and again and get good enough to finish at/under par consistently, I would unquestionably be a better disc golfer. So I do see a smidge of value in that. But at the same time, in the process I would probably quit out of sheer frustration and boredom.

Don't subject yourself to this one. Even if you're enrolled in Kalamazoo Area School 9 Hole Disc Golf Courses 101, play hooky and give this one a miss.
