A lot to like about West Sixth

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 11, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful property
Brewpub, food truck, activities for other family members
Nice variety of wooded, open, and combo holes
Good signage and direction finding
Dog and cart friendly
New teepads and baskets (although see comments about some of the teepad placement below)

Cons:

A wet crossing of the creek
A few teepads which abut trees or other obstacles
A stretch of woods holes of similar distance
Like a park course, there can be many guests unaware of being in the middle of a disc golf course.

Other Thoughts:

Ok, this was definitely not what I was expecting, so I'm going to again break my rule about not writing a course review after only one play. My expectation was to enjoy a beer, a bite to eat, and some mildly entertaining disc golf with a friend. What I got was an impressive facility, a top-notch beer and delicious taco with first rate service, and some really fun and challenging disc golf.

A first review should really give some more thorough hole by hole narrative, but I sadly failed to take really good mental notes, so I will have to hope others will do a better job. I will note a few of our favorites below. In general, I was very impressed by the design and flow of the course. There are a few longish hikes between holes, but nothing horrible and we found our way around the course with only one minor bit of confusion caused by a temporary hole. We both liked the combination of woods and open holes with a few combo holes (open throws into narrow wooded approaches).

The opening hole is a solid downhill opener, 401 feet with plenty of room to fluff a drive and still have a shot to the basket which is surrounded by enough trees to punish a really poor shot. It is followed by a 260-foot tunnel hole which requires an average level of control and distance. From there things move back into the open for a straightforward 310-foot slightly uphill hole. For us, things started to get really interesting with a series of wooded puzzles with tricky lines from #6 - #11. Starting with #12, the course presents a series of various combinations of open fields and woods before culminating in a wide open finishing hole playing downhill 487 feet with a lovely view of the tap-room, orchard, and hop yard.

I'd rate the course itself as a 3.5. I would have enjoyed a few par 4 and maybe a par 5 holes. The placement of some of the teepads against trees or other obstacles was also unfortunate. However, the excellent layout, stellar amenities, and overall attractiveness of the property, I believe, warrant a rating of 4. I certainly will not quibble with anyone who thinks the course deserves a lower rating, and subsequent visits might cause me to revise my thinking.
