Directly adjacent to my hotel? Gotta play it 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 11, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Right next to the Westin Westminster, like literally across the street. Very convenient, I had planned to play certain course on my trip to CO, but this one was an awesome surprise bonus.
-tees are nice concrete pads with ample room for a normal run up. Tee signs are pretty good, I played as the sun was setting, so I couldn't make out some of the more guarded pins, so the tee signs were super awesome
-Fairways are in good condition, it seems like there used to be grass, but it dried up and died a while ago, but the ground is intact,a nd easily traversable
-Rough, wow, this is some rough rough. Hmm, let me rephrase that, the rough is difficult, which I think makes the course better, more fun, and more challenging.
-Elevation is used pretty well, not on every hole, but on some, in my opinion 11 uses it best, you play along a hillside.
-Concrete walking paths from the park follow the course pretty well, or more likely, the course was designed to follow the paths, in any case, the paths are great
-Water use: I assume there is a creek/river of some sort running along a good majority of the holes, but it was pretty dry when I played, so if my assumption is correct, this course incorporates water into its design well. Also, there is a massive lake/pond in the middle of the park, it doesn't come into play and I can kinda see why, but I was a little disappointed
-Holes themselves are designed well, each hole is pretty unique, most holes have a clear "normal" play, but there is room to get weird also

Cons:

-Basket visibility: as you may have read above, I played as darkness was creeping over the course, so the baskets were hard to see, so for me this is a con, although I'm sure you could see them alright in daylight.
- Baskets themselves are meh, probably the middle of the line in terms of quality, it's no DISCatcher, but it gets the job done
-I had a tough time navigating this course, it seems rather compact, I'm sure locals breeze through, but I struggled a bit. That being said, with the help of UDisc, I got around no problem
-No benches
-Not the prettiest park, granted, I played in November and none of the trees had leaves anymore, but, I've seen better locations
-Some garbage on the ground, not a lot, but just enough to make me unhappy
-Fairways don't intersect, some tees get close, which is a little confusing, but I don't think any cross. Like a mentioned earlier, this course is a little crammed

Other Thoughts:

Like I said at the beginning, this course was a surprise bonus play for me, so if you come to the Denver area, stay at the Westin Westminster for a short walk to a Disc Golf course, also, try the French toast it's awesome.

Long Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 7, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great tees and baskets
Well marked (a few signs were missing, but not tough to follow)
Holes 7-18 were challenging with water on nearly every hole

Cons:

Holes 2-6 were long shots across a field
Some park traffic on paths, nothing too disruptive
Could be very windy (not when I was there though)
No vegetation, minimal trees

Other Thoughts:

I put 2 discs in the water, but was able to retrieve both
Plenty of room for more holes
Course starts and ends in strange locations (not near parking lots)

It could be better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 21, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course design is excellent and the holes are long. It really doesn't overlap at all and it is a great walk

Cons:

The terrain is horrible, the course really isn't maintained. It's either thick weeds, mud, bugs, or murky streams. Come in hiking boots and jeans. There are prickly weeds everywhere. Easy to loose discs here as well.

Other Thoughts:

The design of this course is so great I would rate it a 4 if it were maintained at all. The rough terrain is just such a factor here that I can't look at it as a great course to play. I can't even take my dog here because of the weeds

Bomber Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 17, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

I just played this course for the first time, I work in the Interlocken tech loop so the course I play all the time and this was a nice change from the short technical 200ft holes, this course is like almost 400ft each hole and lets you rip em.

-Wide open holes with some technical shots
-Do not need to many discs with you, bring a big throw disc and a overstable disc
-Water hazards on most of the holes but there is no way you will lose a disc as the water is very clear and to shallow

Cons:

-Bad course to play on a windy day since there is not much tree cover

Other Thoughts:

-Play the alternate tee for hole 1, its way cooler!

westmonster 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

distance! (beginner arm here) 250 or better on your drives to play here (imo). One hole was playing over 600....Some challenging holes midway trough course with trees and dry creek calling for a reasonable placement of shot, but not impossible.

Cons:

Distance......Maybe not the best place for beginners. Strong potential for lost discs along the dry creek. Witch is not dry, and comes into play in several areas. The weeds/overgrowth can swallow a disc in some areas as well.

Other Thoughts:

I am about 3 months into disc golfing and found this course to be be a challenge and fun. (+13 with one melt down hole that cost me 4 and a lost disc.....) When i bought my beginner three disc pack, i came right to westmonster form the store. I was a little discouraged @ that time and wondered if disc golf was for me? Three months later I found this course to be a fair challenge requiring some well placed shots, and other areas with room to rip at it with reckless abandon.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-First of all this course is very easy to find and is just a short walk from the parking lot.
-The park itself is very nice and open.
-The concrete tees are nice and the baskets still have their structural integrity.
-The course is very easy to follow. A person who has never been here can easily find his/her way around without a map
-Beginner friendly. Unlike the other courses in the Denver area, this course is big and open with just a small chance of losing your disc in the water.
-Has a few interesting shots with elevation and blind tee shots that give this course a little spice.

Cons:

-The tee signs were put in a few years ago I assume, because now they are a mess or gone. Some tee signs show that the hole is 400' away when it couldn't be more then 250' away. Brand new signs would make this place at least half a star better.
-I mentioned that the fairways are well kept, however, if you do not keep it in the fairway there is all kinds of thorns and brush that will pick you apart if you are not careful.
-There is a long walk back to the parking lot from hole #18.
-Have a person spot you. Like mentioned, there are a few blind tee shots to precarious pin placements so a spotter would help locating a disc.
-This course has a lot of repetitive shots and I could see it become boring if I played here often enough
-This course is very crowded with other discers, it is good that the sport is really active out here but bad that you may have to wait.

Other Thoughts:

When I was up in Denver on vacation I played here and Interlocken Park, this course is a bit easier and a lot more fun to bring my family that does not play disc golf as much because of the low chance to lose discs.

This course is great for the land that it is on and is a passable course. If you are in the area and you are a newer player or just want to play quickly this may be a course that you should consider.

Nice Suprise 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 12, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

I was expecting a hellish safari across open wastelands, but found instead a decent course worth your time on a lazy afternoon. Good back nine brings the stream and dense brush/trees in to play. Beautiful community park with all of the amenities (restrooms, playground, plenty of parking). The course largely keeps you out of the main walking paths, though you have to keep your eyes open on a few holes. Decent elevation changes and gullies come in to play. Enough long holes to air it out if you are working on technique or you have a big arm. Not crowded at all, so you can take your time and throw a couple of discs per hole. Nice that they put the tee number on the back of the signs, which came in handy several times. Pretty close to the 36 highway, so you can stop off on the way to Interlocken course or Boulder. Passive geese on the course don't attack you.

Cons:

Course flow is not intuitive for a first timer, and holes 18 and 1 are probably 1/4 mile apart. Best to start on hole 3 near parking. Baskets were tough to see, as they don't have the yellow band and are usually far away. Several baskets are 6"-12" lower than usual.

Other Thoughts:

Could be rough in the wind, but that's exactly why you should play it...we can't always have perfect conditions.

Fun, but bring extra discs 2+ years drive by

Pros:

This is one of my favorite courses, but I just can't seem to hold on to discs here. There are lots of variations in the holes with some great long distance shots. Good tee boxes. Really fun course and I keep going back even with all the lost discs.

Cons:

This course runs right by a river that seems to have an amazing pull on my discs. It makes for some interesting shots, but the water is nasty if you decide to hop in. It is a pretty rough course so shoes and long pants are a good idea.

Pros:

Some tough shots throughout the course.
Can open up for big arms, and also tighten up for some accuracy.
Less traffic. Can play through as a single at ease.

Cons:

NO UPKEEP! I swear every time I've been to this course the grass/weeds/overgrowth needs to be cut. It's so easy to loose a disc here it's incredible; That being the hole layouts shouldn't make it so.
Lack of helpful signs. Layout can get confusing.

Other Thoughts:

Not a bad place overall. If you know the layout, then it can be very fun.
If the grounds had better care, this course could be one of the best in this area.

Hot Day in Westminster 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2010 Played the course:once

- Long holes
- Difficult shots
- Natural Vegetation and surroundings
- The terrain varies from long open plains to hills and across creeks

Cons:

- Foot tall grass/weeds everywhere
- Occasionally difficult to find disc
- Holes cross and overlap too much
- Pin positions can be difficult to locate

Other Thoughts:

Although I enjoy that the surroundings and plant life are native and natural it is very easy to loose a disc. Not a great course to play by yourself as you may need help locating a disc. The holes are long and difficult. Very fun though, especially withe people who have played the course before as some of the pins are hard to locate.

Great in the Offseason 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 19, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Long holes, good tees, close to my house

Cons:

Can get overgrown. Holes are set up around areas that can vary wildly between dry hills or swamps depending on the time of year.

Other Thoughts:

I was too harsh on this course originally, so I'm editing my review. I played it once when the water was high, and the prairie grass was out of control. I played it again today when it was in good condition, and the course played much better. On this sunny February day, it seemed more like a hidden gem. It's kind of a long walk, but it's a nice place.

Cool course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 5, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice concrete tee pads and baskets.
Detailed signs with distances and pin placements.
Signs have numbers on back making it easy to find the next hole.
Has multiple long holes where you can really bomb it plus various shorter shots that bring the trees and the creek into play.
Hole 1 from the pro tees plays over the lake making for a fun shot.
Hole 1 has an amateur tee so you don't have to throw over the lake if you don't want to.

Cons:

The weeds are really long in some places and a large number of the weeds are thistles or the annoying walk through em and end up with 50 seed pods attached to you.
The creek can eat discs on holes 9-18 and is deep in various places making disc retrieval tougher.
There are walkers/joggers that use paths through the first 8 holes.
After snow melt or heavy rain the course will be pretty muddy.

Other Thoughts:

Parking options:
I prefer to park by the soccer fields and walk to hole 1 behind the pavilion over by the lake, leaving a short walk up half of hole 12 to the parking lot after finishing the round.

You can also park on the west side of the rec center. The teepad for hole three is right next to it. Start there and finish with hole 2.

Johnny Roberts and Camenisch Parks Love Child 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 14, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Westminster DGC is located in a great park that includes baseball fields, fishing ponds, and walking trails. It comes complete with concrete tee boxes, and signs that are average but still handy. There are minor elevation changes, and the biggest difficulty factor is really the overall hole lengths and the creek that plays along most of the back nine.

Most holes are straight-forward, but it really isn't a negative since the terrain on many holes still forces to you to make an accurate shot. There are also some blind ridges on #8, #9, and #14 to be wary of, because any errant shot left may mean saying goodbye to your disc. Bottom line, if you are long off the tee or have a good mid-range game, you will feel right at home on this course.

BEST HOLE/S: #17; #18

Cons:

Where to park, how far to walk - what is the lesser of two evils? I would say this is certainly the biggest con since hole #18 and hole #1 are not close to each other at all. My recommendation is to park by #12 and walk to #1 since it seems slightly shorter or even start at #12 and then make your way to #1 after playing your last six. With a practice basket in this location already, it just seems to be the easiest. However, you can park by the baseball fields and start right on #1; however you'll have a long walk at the end - so just pick your poison.

WORST HOLE/S: #4; #5

Other Thoughts:

Northwest Denver course feels like a good old fashion infomercial to me. "Crowds at Johnny Roberts DGC got you down? Tired of the ghetto atmosphere and confusing layout that both Camenisch Park courses have to offer? East Interlocken Park and North Midway Park just to mediocre to satisfy your needs? Well then enjoy a combination of the bunch here at Westminster DGC, now 10% less confusing and less crowded for the first time player!"

Seriously, barring the long walk between the first and eighteenth Westminster feels like the perfect mix between Camenisch and Johnny Roberts, and offers so much more than East Interlocken and North Midway having a full 18 holes. With slightly smaller crowds and non-overlapping holes in more diverse setting - I believe this was just a better disc golf experience. Granted, this place still has its issues that prevent it from being ranking higher, but both experienced players and people new to the sport will be able to enjoy themselves here - I certainly did.

Decent 'Big' Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Hole 1 is a memorable drive right over a small lake, that demands you throw at least 2 discs just because it is so fun. Long holes which are rare to come by in CO. Good cement tee pads, great baskets, decent signage. Some very risky basket placements are possible next to the creek.

Cons:

Poorly maintained weeds have become obstacles that are not intended to be there, many are 5-8 feet in height and in certain patches are 10-12 ft in height. Many patches of weeds. Not great for bringing out the wife, or others without a 'big' drive as several of the holes are 400+. Front 9 has very few obstacles and basically is nothing but big open shots that you can take just about any line on.

Other Thoughts:

This could become a much better course if some trees were planted on the front 9, and the weeds were better maintained. We like to start at hole 5 in order to make the start and end of the course both hit the parking lot. There is a long walk between hole 18 and hole 1, but we usually take the opportunity to throw a couple bombs in the soccer fields.

350 Ft. to the Prairie Dog 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 22, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is long and exposed. It is a great course to practice long distance driving techniques as errant throws tend to land safely. The signs, baskets and tee pads are good quality. This course also tends to be less crowded than other nearby courses.

Cons:

The scenery changes a bit, but the necessary shot types don't change much. Everything is mostly big drives and long putts without obstruction.
Hole number 14 can be a bit of problem as the dry landscape and right to left slope tend to funnel discs down into the creek. The bank is too steep to descend and the water is pretty murky and deep. Discs tend to be hard to see and hard to recover. The hundreds of prairie dogs can be a bit of nuisance, although they do not pose much of a threat unless your disc literally lands in one of their dozens of holes.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course to play in the winter months. The weeds are gone and the fairways are exposed to the sun (which in Colorado usually means warmth). It also means your drives will skip and roll well on the many longer holes. However, be sure to bring plenty of water.
Also, be sure to enjoy the view from the number 16 tee pad. It might be the best peak to peak view of the mountains of any course along the front range.

How far can you throw? 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 22, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Excellent concrete tee boxes. Double chain baskets in good condition. Highly visible tee signs with large numbers on the back side so you can tell what hole it is from a distance and the other direction. Some holes have pretty challenging pin placements (#14 and #17 come to mind easily). There are some water challenges (#9, #10, #14, #17) and some great change of elevation holes (#2, #5, #15, #16). The course doesn't particularly favor righties or lefties as most of the holes are pretty straight shots. Hole #1 has a Pro tee over the lake and an Am tee that plays around the lake.

Cons:

Starting and finishing holes are not near each other so you'll be walking either to get to the first hole or after you're done to get back to your car. Some of the water is pretty nasty looking and doesn't inspire you to try and retrieve any lost discs.

#18 is a blind RHBH anhyzer shot that has potential conflicts with players in the fairway of #12 throwing in the opposite direction.

As length is the name of the game here there isn't a whole lot of shot variety.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fairly large park with lots of open spaces that makes for a wonderful disc golf course location. Lots of prarie dogs make their homes on the first half of this course. The terrain is mostly dry and dusty with not much grass.

Almost every hole on this course will challenge players to throw as far as they can off the tee... and I loved it! If you've got a big arm or enjoy seeing a disc fly a long way this is a fun course to play. If I was a local I could see how this course might get boring after a while with the lack of finesse shots and variety.

If you park in the lot by the #12 tee it's a bit of a walk to the first hole but you have the advantage of stopping to restock discs, water, etc. from your car about half way through your round, and hole #18 finishes right there as well.

Pros:

This is one of those recreational type of parks with ball fields and a skate park, so you will be able to find a bathroom but you will not be able to bring a small child and have them play at the play ground. The park is easy to find and there is plenty of parking. The course follows a creek and circles a lake. There is a mix of park grass and badlands grass, however the badlands grass is not the type that you would want to mow because of it uniqueness. The tee pads are concrete and the signs give you a general direction to the basket. Number seven was my favorite because it has you throwing over two bends of a creek and a bike path in between trees. This course was fun for just letting it rip.

Cons:

On the day I played it was just sparsely populated enough to not get any help with being pointed in the right direction. I badly needed a map because there are no signs after the basket. For the most part the course is just wide open and there is not much challenge variety. Keep an eye on those discs in the weeds, also wear socks. Make sure to look out for people on the bike path.

Other Thoughts:

An easy to find course in the north Denver area. After the first time I played it I felt it wasn't anything special. However, the more I think about it, I think this is one of the better more complete courses I've played in Colorado.
