Pros:

Wetherby Park DGC is a very beginner friendly niner on the southside of Iowa City. The course is located in a pretty little park with fantastic upkeep. The course is totally flat and mostly open, but they do involve the few trees on the property when possible, most notably on the latter part.

The baskets are new Mach II's with the number plates on the top. These are all in great shape and catch as well as Mach II's do. There's apparnetly two pin positions per hole as well. I didn't scout any of the alternates out but that's pretty rare for a nine hole course anywhere from my experience. Can't ask for much more than that.

Concrete tees on each hole. On the smaller side, but all were level, grippy and much better than natural tees. One tee per hole. Again, above average.

There's no tee signs. Instead there's stone blocks imbedded into the ground next to the back end of the tee pads. These are engraved with the hole number and the distances to both of the possible basket placements. Simple but effective. The baskets are visible from every tee anyway so a hole map isn't needed.

The course starts south of the parking lot and just east of the basketball courts playing to the basket you'll see southeast of the first tee. The course plays clockwise essentially from there on out. Great flow. You won't get lost out here.

There's a cool garden kind of area that borders the left side of hole 9. Not great to land in obviously, but very scenic and worth a quick stroll through on your way back to the car. This also can come into play if you overshoot the pin on hole 6.

The course is permanent and free to play. Most likely not too busy with many other disc golfers on most days either.

Cons:

A little repetive feeling to start out. Holes 3,4 and 5 are just wide open holes with nothing in the way. Hole 6 has the garden area behind the basket as mentioned above. Hole 7 is back to wide openness.

The walking path that wraps around the park can come into play in a few spots if you're not careful. It should be easily avoidable if the wind is down. If it's not though, it's very much in play.

Basically just a collection of shorter straight shots here. There's not much they could've really done better here. But it's just not a very exciting layout due to the limits of the property.

Other Thoughts:

Pretty well done niner, albeit not the most exciting thing you'll ever see. The equipment is all above average for a short course like this but the lack of any real standout holes just keeps this one at a 2 for me.

If you're near here and want a quick round or to run some aces you can't beat this place. Great for beginners or newer players but rec and above players will yawn at this one.

Not Worth It 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Quick to play
-A good practice course
-Good for beginners
-High winds in fall and spring, take that as you will
-Concrete slabs for tee-offs

Cons:

-Short fairways
-High winds in fall and spring, take that as you will
-Confusing/poor layout
- Not much thought seemed to be put in this course

Other Thoughts:

It's hard to know your even at a disc golf course when you pull into the parking lot, you see no baskets or signs. After a brief walk over a small hill, there they are but I had no idea where to start. I found myself on 8, then 9, then 8 again (why not, I'm walking past the tee), then I found two and then 1 which seemed to take me over to 5. Just crazy and confusing.

So avoid all this by just veering to the east side of the park where tee 1 is. There are very few obstacles and trees in this park so the wind rips through pretty fast especially in the the fall and spring.

Will probably not go back since there are much better courses in the area.

Typical Park Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 16, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Alternate Tee placements
+ Nice park
+ The teepads had the distances for the holes etched into them. Really cool touch
+ No interference from other park users

Cons:

- A bit vanilla. Straight forward on most holes.

Other Thoughts:

Pretty open park course. A good place to get your friends introduced to the sport. Most the holes have minimal obstacles but there is one with alot of trees in play.

The Perfect Course For The Teen Players! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 12, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

I see them at almost every course now. They're the 15-19 year olds usually playing in a group. They are usually carrying one or maybe two discs. What they mostly have in common is the propensity to fire up wild, uncontrolled forehand throws. The harder they throw, the wilder they get. Sometimes their drives will land in a different county. Well teens, someone in Iowa City has designed a course just for you! Wetherby Park DGC is wide open, like an old man's zipper. It would be pretty difficult to lose a disc in the spacious park that is Wetherby.

The course has nice sized concrete tee pads. The signs are simple blocks set in the ground which is actually a good, cheap way to place signage. The baskets are Mach II models.

My favorite hole was the only one with any obstacles, # 8. It's just a simple 220' hyser throw around the garden but the basket is seriously guarded by a huge Cheery tree with thick, thick branches.

Cons:

Too wide open for everyone's taste.

Wide open terrain will be windy.

Really lacks creativity and challenge.

Other Thoughts:

If you are a scattered armed teenager, this is your wet dream! Fire away! Not hunting for discs in the tall grass and bushes and trees. No more losing discs. This might be your Field of Dreams. Maybe Kevin Costner will join you for a round.

Other than us course baggers, I don't see many normal type players frequenting this course on any kind of regular basis.

good 9 hole practice course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 25, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great quality baskets.

Although most holes have some kind of minor obstacle, it's usually near the basket, with little or no effect on the choice of drive. If this were a destination course I'd consider this a con, but since this is a beginner or practice course, I like the fact that there are a variety of lines to test on each hole. There are only a couple that have a restricted route.

Two basket positions on each hole. Tee markers have been installed as of April 2016, showing distances to the right and left basket positions.

Park is very well-maintained.

Cons:

No shelter on the fairways, it is wide open and exposed throughout. Chance of overlap with other park users on a couple of holes.

Other Thoughts:

If you are a course bagger, may as well stop in for the 30-45 min it takes to play it. If you're looking for championship challenge or landscape aesthetics, this is not the place for you. But for locals, it's nice to have a practice course in the southeast side of Iowa City.

Simple little course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 4, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is well maintained, and it's wide open off the tee. The baskets are also in very good shape. There are a handful of narrower tee shots near the end.

Cons:

With it being wide open to the south, it's really susceptible to the wind. I threw into a gale when sneaking in a quick round while on the road, and nothing protected my disc once it left my hand.

Other Thoughts:

Like many small courses, it lacks markers on the tee boxes. I was lucky to follow some locals, yet I still managed to throw at the wrong basket once.

Handy location. Shelter has plumbing. Smooth mowed fairways. Properly configured course. Some mega-wide holes. Avg. player might bag a bird or sniff an ace here and there.

Cons:

Not much wind protection. Slight Southern slope. Stark, adjacent, open, unused acreage detracts.

Baskets in a field 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 31, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Course that's less than a year old. Always nice to see new courses, no matter the difficulty.
- GREAT addition to an already busy city park. Park has a long walking path, gardens, benches, playground equipment, half court basketball, a large splash pad (heavily used), a shelter, and bathrooms.
- Course is pretty well set aside from other park happenings, aside from the walking path.
- Nice concrete tee pads, and good baskets.
- There is some varying distance here, between 180 - 365 feet.

Cons:

- The course is wide open, with no obstacles. A few trees here or there on holes, but nothing to make this course worthwhile. There are trees and options here where they could have made this into a more formidable layout, but they obviously chose not too.
- No signage to speak of, and the tee pads aren't labeled. Finding the first tee required me walking out the #1 basket to ensure it was the correct one. FYI, #1 pad is directly behind the octagonal shelter house.
- Very windy the day I went, which is probably abnormal. However, the south and west confines of the park are nothing but miles of farm fields, so there's really nothing to stop the wind if it's out there.

Other Thoughts:

- Great to see this as an addition to a nice city park. It's just unfortunate that time and money was spent on nice baskets and concrete pads, but the course layout wasn't made the least bit challenging or interesting.

short, flat beginner's course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 18, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Clean and well-kept.

Cons:

Every hole is wide open, flat, basically treeless, and short. Tee pads are short, but don't really need long run ups on this course. Only obstacles are people sunbathing and kids playing softball.

Other Thoughts:

This is a pretty new, well-maintained 9-hole course in a busy neighborhood park in southeast Iowa City. A good course for people completely new to the game, but otherwise not worth a regular trip unless you only have 30 minutes for a round.

Hole 1 is located towards the back left of the course if you're coming from Taylor Rd. Hole 9 is closest to the parking lot.
