Old School Disc Golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 20, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course has nice concrete tee pads (2 pads on most holes). There are many nice big mature trees that make the course much more difficult since it is so short. It is really nice having the office up the hill that sells some really nice plastic (at very reasonable prices). Did well with the small amount of land that they had to work with.

Cons:

This course was way too close together...all the holes are right on top of each other. I went out and it was not terribly crowded but was constantly having to keep an eye out for incoming discs. The signage on many of the holes were destroyed. The course had some terrible erosion issues which makes many of the greens unplayable. The guy I was playing with put about 4 or 5 right up by the basket...they then caught an edge and rolled on the dirt (no grass around most baskets) down off some pretty steep drop offs into creeks. The course was also littered with all kinds of trash.

Other Thoughts:

This course really only has enough land there to make a 9 hole course...and I think it would make a nice 9 holer that you could even make some longer holes on. It was an interesting look into what our disc golf roots look like...having said that...I really can't say that I will be going back to play here anytime soon.

Minature Disc Golf Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 19, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

2 concrete tee pads

You can get two rounds in fairly quickly

You only need 2 discs to play due to the short pins

Short arm heaven

Cons:

Lots of traffic and trash

Watch your head, maybe wear a helmet because a lot of holes are on top of each other.

Very short course that is kind of run down, but the last time I was there they did some retaining wall work and mulching.

Pay to play (if they catch you)

Other Thoughts:

Not a bad course to play a few times a year. Play Sioux Passage then come here and you will understand why I called it a minature golf course. It is fun to see how far disc golf has come since this course was installed many years ago.

it's like stepping back into 1979 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 20, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

-two sets of concrete pads
-some nice elevation and decent risk/ reward with steep drop offs to the creek on many holes.
-A lot of safety mandos here because there are a lot of fairways close to each other. These mandos generally make the holes a bit more challenging. Like hole 2 is probably only 180 ft away if you throw straight at it, but there is a rhbh hyzer mando off the pad which adds to the hole.
-A lot of work has been done here to help maintain the natural beauty of the course. A lot of bank stabilization, erosion control by pins and tee pads. These all make this a special place because they are trying to maintain the land in it's 1979 glory.

Cons:

-This course is super crowded younger folks, so be careful of people throwing in on you, people stealing your plastic etc.
-Although a lot of the aforementioned erosion control has helped, there is still a need for more land conservation as there are large gullies on some of the fairways.
-Obviously this course is super short, which I'm not really holding against it as it was a different game when the course was made, so if you bring a putter only, you will have a great time with a little bit of challenge.

Other Thoughts:

-This course would be great and a lot of fun for superclass, so bring out the zephyrs and throw some old school disc

Oldie but a Goodie 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 1, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very well designed and maintained course. Maximizes the terrain available for the course. Great course if you are looking to get a round in, in an hour. Park has done a great job of battling erosion to maintain integrity of course design.
Lots of fun elevation changes with lots of risk reward shots because there is a creek that runs through most of the course.

Cons:

Very short....and that is mostly a product of being one of---if not the oldest courses in the state. Disc golf was a different sport then.
This course is extremely crowded. We went to play this past thanksgiving at 9:00 am and the course was PACKED...and it wasn't for a tourney.

Other Thoughts:

I grew up playing this course and while it is not extremely challenging, it offers fun for any skill level. With the land they had to work with...the city really put together a winner. I love taking a trip in time to imagine what disc golf was like when it all started.

It is a disc golf course. Ace opportunities.

Cons:

If you are very accurate this would be good for you. If not then just go for the experience

Short but fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 25, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good variety of terrain and shot shapes.
Both heavily wooded and mostly open holes.
Deep ravines add risk to shots on many holes
Some holes have alternate tees.
Several ace runs
Lots of trash cans
The locals were all very nice.

Cons:

Many if not most holes lack signs and the sign on one hole (I think it was 2) is not beside either tee pad. This course is very short. I don't have a big arm but I still never got the chance to just rip it. Ravines and heavy foilage in some places make it easy to lose a disc.

Other Thoughts:

There was a 50 cent fee to play.
The course was very busy but that was good because there was always someone to tell me where the next tee/basket was.

Great For Amateurs 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 7, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

SHORT!, which makes it good for non-bombers like myself and as a place to tweak those trick shots. Aces are definately possible here.

The close proximity of the holes also makes finding errant discs relatively easy as so many tees and pins butt up to each other.

The park maintainance has got much better over recent years, adding some structure to the course, and there's trash cans at every hole, which (should) make litter non-existant.

Good signs to point you towards golfer parking.

Great flow to the course. There aren't any signs between pins/tees, but the next tee is always so close, it doesn't matter

Cons:

Due to the hills and the presence of a creek that bisects the course, it is virtually unplayable for a few days after a strong rain, so if you go, bring a change of shoes and socks and a towel for wiping off disks.

Parking is sparse near the first hole/18th pin, so if that lot is full, you'd be well advised to park up top by the community center. Rumors abound that cars have been towed that weren't parked in marked parking spots at the bottom.

Many of the tee signs have been vandalized.

Could use a porta-john or two between the parking lot and the hill down to the first hole.

This is the first course for a great majority of people in St. Louis, so manners and etiquette are pretty sparse. Be patient and remember you were once a clueless noob too.

Other Thoughts:

There is a $1.00 fee to play the course, but rarely an attendant before the first hole or roving patrols to collect dues.

Just remember, the more people that DO pay the fee, the better maintained the course will be.

The office in the community center at the top of the hill where one would pay that fee (and get scorecards) also has a small selection of discs and bags on sale should you need to make a last minute purchase. Discs are also available for rent.

UPDATE 10/20: A second lower parking lot has been added which more than doubled the parking capacity. Just be careful you don't end up in 17 or 18's firing range.

Apparently erosion is getting the better of the place and the backside of 18's green shifted a few feet closer to the creek below. As such the pin is now sealed off at its current location, but will be moved out of harms way (most likely northwest, back closer to the tees) shortly.

Fun 'n' EZ 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 23, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Nicely wooded park with some elevation changes and other fun terrain obstacles (i.e., a huge ravine that you might have to throw out of)

- Mostly short, tricky, fun Par 3 holes.

- Good morale booster if you have a decent short game

- Lots of aceable holes

- The parks system has done some maintenance work recently (ie mulching, adding berms to prevent erosion)

Cons:

- Aside from holes 17 and 18, the course has no distance whatsoever

- Pros/Advanced players might find it too easy (unless you feel like shooting ten under)

- Crowded during peak hours

Other Thoughts:

The course costs $1 to play (payable in the community center on the hillside, or to the intermittently present course attendant)

Fun course for skins!

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 7, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Great use of the land and terrain, resulting in just gobs of natural obstacles. From trees to gorges to creeks, this course really has a lot for you to work around, and despite its shortness, you really do have to work and concentrate to earn your pars and birdies.

Cons:

Traffic. It seems like this course is always backed up. Plus, with the fairways running so close together, there is a constant concern of hitting (or being hit by) another disc golfer.

The course, particularly the front 9, has really seen better days, and erosion seems like it has really done a number on it. You may want to avoid this one if it has rained recently, as it can be extremely muddy and slippery in spots.

The tee pads are also way too short, and while most holes don't really require a run-up...it would be nice to have more of an option.

Navigation is also a pain, as the holes are not particularly well marked, and can be quite difficult your first time or two to figure out where to go to and where to throw to.

Other Thoughts:

This is piece of history, providing a definite glimpse into what the game once was. True, it is a short course, but it still has much to offer and can be thoroughly enjoyable to play.

Challenging Pitch'N'Putt! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 24, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Living practically right down the street from this course, I've played it plenty of times. This course allows you to try all shots imaginable. Very short holes, but plenty to get in the way. Very well maintained and every hole is different. Uphill tomahawks, downhill rolls, hyzers, an-hyzers, forehands, you name it. I use every disc off the tees from my long range, to my putter. Some left and right doglegs create headaches for some. A creak with some steep ravines flows right through the middle of this course, reeking havoc on many of the holes. Great for first timers or someone looking to get more accuracy from there midrange shots. One perk is the pin for 18 is located about 20 feet from the parking lot so it makes for a great putting green before a round, especially if your waiting for someone to finish hole 1.

Cons:

Short, short, shorter. I think there's only two holes over 200 ft and they are holes 17 and 18. It's easy to lose a disc as there is plenty of woods and lots of holes with huge drop offs behind the pins. Not much signage for holes, but again not really needed as you're only about 100-150 ft. away from the pin off the tee. Course is usually packed on the weekends, and don't try playing it after the rain...you will eat it!

Other Thoughts:

If you don't have much time, but still want to get in 18 holes, this is a perfect course. I'm trying to get my 8-yr old son into the game and this is where I take him. Short but challenging holes make for a good lesson.

Technical 2+ years drive by

Pros:

A short technical course that requires a lot of thinking and strategy. The course plays in an opening in the woods and is compact, but the placement of the holes and tees bring many trees into play.

Cons:

too close for comfort. busy. have to pay a dollar. not too many long drives.

Other Thoughts:

Fun course for beginners and experts. Makes you use everything in your bag.

Mini-Golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 2, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Easy Course. Not far from my home (apologies for irrelevance.) Wooded Area. Good practice for mid range and putt shots/aces.

Cons:

So so so so so short. I started on the wrong hole and threw to the wrong tee which was about 100ft. I knew the course was short but i could not believe that. So some others started playing and i followed em'. Still ungodly short.
Friendly locals. Maybe there was a course map somewhere, maybe not, but I was very lost.

Other Thoughts:

A group of park maintenance workers doing absolutely nothing making more money than I am were all just chillin' at hole 9 or 10 or something. Very distracting and awkward.

Nostalgic 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 11, 2007 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course was designed by Ed Headrick in 1979 and has not been significantly altered since. It is a good time capsule of the original disc golf courses. It also has one of the best mix of hyzer-anhyzer shots of any course I've played. There have been recent efforts to use more aggressive landscaping to control the erosion problems that plague the property, and these upgrades have been a welcome addition.

Cons:

It was designed for Midnight Flyers, so it has been obsolete since 1983! The holes are short and shorter. A lot of the trees that made up the challenge of the original course are gone. The course has a terrible erosion problem, so playing after rain is an adventure. The tees are too short to take a run-up on, but the holes are so short that it does not really matter. The course is usually packed with people, and the holes are really close together. You have to be ready to duck!

Other Thoughts:

There sometimes is an attendant at the skate park who collects a $1.00 fee to play. When there is no attendant, the local skate punks will often pretend to be the attendant and try to scam you out of a buck.

At one point the parks department made the curious decision to put some plastic flower garden border-type rings around the baskets. Originally they were filled with mulch, but they were never dug into the ground. The ones that remain no longer contain mulch and just sort or sit around the basket, looking odd and trashy. They do make a nice disc stop for your upshot.

Like a lot of old courses, if you stick to throwing putters you can have a good time. Just don't expect a great challenge.
