well appointed park course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 4, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

This 9 hole course is in Randal Park, on the west side of Yakima just off Nob Hill Blvd. It is in an older, well landscaped park with mature trees and well maintained grass. Greens aren't worn down and stop a disc well, unusual for eastern Washington.

The park is big enough that the holes are longer than the usual park course and fairly well spaced out for the most part(more later). There are play areas outside the course, a river overlook, picnic gazebo, and pot-a-potties(disappointed not real bathroom but better than nothing).

Tees and signs were both very well done. Tees are comfortable size for a good run up and signs were as good as I've seen in a while, easy to read with clearly marked mandos(4 holes have them).

The designers did fairly well with the space, 3 uses overhanging trees to punish high shots, there is a nice drop on 9, and 4, 6, and 7 use the verge of the river as a VERY unforgiving rough. Over shoot 7 badly and you are in the river. While this seems like a fairly straightforward course, I am willing to bet it plays very differently when the wind picks up.

Cons:

Not too many cons for this one. A little ways to drive off freeway if passing through, could be a problem if you're on a tight schedule.

Biggest con, as mentioned in previous reviews, is that 5-7 are tight on each other and it feels like 1 or 2 of them could go away. I understand the desire to do 9 holes, I certainly prefer 9 or 18 hole courses where possible. With as big as this park is and the open nature of most of the course it was very disappointing to get to 5 and 6, very short holes with not alot of challenge. Small trees on 5 and 1 med tree with some long grass on 6. It seems that these holes could be improved, or one of them removed. A small complaint on a otherwise good course.

Other main con is this park seems popular with non-golfers. I was there early afternoon on a weekday and had to wait a couple times for walkers on the paths that go along or across 4, 5, 8, and 9 and was worried about couple laying not far off green for 9, well within range of errant throw. This could be a very difficult course to play during busy park times.

Wrong time of year for snakes, and as this area develops likely hood of seeing them goes down. always good to be aware in eastern Washington but I wouldn't be too concerned.

Other Thoughts:

This is a beautiful park and one of the few courses along this stretch, I'm glad it's a pretty good one. Heard there had been baskets of some sort in another park. couldn't find them but there may be more courses in Yakima's future. Let's hope so if this course is an indication of what to expect.

Great nine hole 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 14, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

One of the first nine hole courses that did not feel super cramped. I actually used my driver to drive most off the holes instead of my putter. Great variety of left and right holes.
Plenty of old growth trees to add some challenge. Water is around but not to likely to be landed in. Not many holes are an easy birdie actually had to work for par on most of them.
Easy to find and parking was close to start and finish.

Cons:

No signs in yet so it was a little tuff to find the t-pads but it is a new course and I am sure they are working on it.
T-pads are made of gravel right now and are pretty uneven. Hope the do concreat or something more even.
I did have to wait for quite a few dog walkers and there was snow on the ground, not sure if it will be hard to play when the weather is nice. They were all friendly but pretty slow.
I did not see a playground for kids close by, my kids like it when there is a playground.

Other Thoughts:

Great to see a course in Yakima. Hope to see more.
Happy that there was a porter potty, most parks don't have restrooms especially in the winter.
