New Wikder Will Put Hair On Your Chest (And Moss On Your Discs)! 2+ years

Pros:

Not being a local, I would be curious as to what transpired with the original Wilder. I know i'm not supposed to bring up other courses in my review but I believe the similarities and difference between the two are relevant to this review.

As I drove up the street, I realized that I had played this course before. Upon parking and walking up to the kiosk, I think it hit me that this is a totally different course than the Wilder that I played a few years ago. This course has the same nice kiosk complete with map and lots of other disc golf information. There is a practice basket near. It has great concrete tee pads, wonderful informative signs, Discatchers with the yellow band and small numbers and a nice system for finding your way from hole to hole. This is a series of small sticks along the way with an orange Sasquatch on them. Without these Sasquatch signs, this course would have been a bear to navigate. Another very helpful amenity here is the bolt system on the tee sign pole showing you which position, A or B, the basket is set in.

Two similarities between Wilder the original and New Wilder are: A lovely Oregon old growth forest and my personal favorite, the softest, most cushiony forest floor I've walked on. It's like walking on foam rubber!

Hole # 1 is nothing less then intimidating and that's before you actually try to negotiate the path leading to the basket. # 1 is 410' across sick, scary looking gully. This has to be disc graveyard. The path is Sherpa approved.

The underbrush is a combination of sword ferns, salal and stickers bushes. They all want to swallow your disc never to be seen again. Definitely, not a course to play solo. # 3 is 630' down a power line. Near the # 4 tee pad is the biggest protective screen I've ever seen. I felt relatively safe seated behind it. # 4 plays 335' up a fairly steep hill. The elevated basket makes it more easily spotted from the pad. I don't quite figure # 8 out. The basket in the long position sits down in this small depression with a net behind it to prevent rollaways. But there is a tee sign here on this little fence that reads # 11 ?

I loved the bench cut out of the large Fir log at # 10. I loved # 16 where you have to thread the needle between two trees that have grown out of one. It's unique as well as a challenging throw.

Cons:

Cons? The fact that you will spend so much of your time searching in the sword ferns, salal and various stickers for your discs.

Physical workout needed just to navigate this course will be a deterrent for some players.

No epic or memorable holes. The original Wilder had at least three ultra cool holes throwing over steep gorges. This terrain is pretty tame in comparison.

Very small con but the # 16 tee sign is missing the bolt which shows which position the basket is in.

The # 8 basket was set down in a small gully but a tee sign here says # 11. Confusing?

Having to get a permit will probably eliminate some players or else they will just play the course anyway or possibly might not know that a permit is needed. I was ready to show my passport and my Russian Visa but no-one asked. I was kinda disappointed. I really wanted the Wilder stamp in my passport.

Other Thoughts:

As I was playing this course, I was thinking about how some players (certainly not me) might remember this course in nursery rhyme.

1-2 skip a few.
3-4 lost one more
5-6 tripped on a stick
7-8 late for a date
9-10 never again

This course will have this effect on a certain percentage of players. Hardy players looking for a challenge will embrace New Wilder. Myself, I mostly miss the old course. Those throws over the gorge were special. I won't forget them. I think the memory I will most remember about New Wilder is Hole # 1 and what kind of a man it takes to fire your disc off into that abyss.
