An Expertly Executed Niner

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 12, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

- beautifully maintained and manicured park
- good incorporation of elevation change
- huge, mature, gnarled trees add to the look/challenge
- pond water hazard well incorporated for multiple holes
- notable distance for a nine hole course
- wraps around back to parking lot nicely
- brand new Lat 64 baskets
- full color tee signs with maps at all tees
- some holes have alternate tees
- new concrete tees on all holes
- only lightly to moderately wooded, but good number of obstacles to create a challenging course
- most holes have 2 pin positions (1 populated at a time)
- garbage cans and park benches at each set of tees
- forces a decent level of shot shaping
- navigation was generally straightforward and flowed well

Cons:

- may be frustrating to newer players, as this is a pretty difficult niner
- safety hazards with throws over driveways/walking paths
- hole 7 (and 8, a bit) throws towards residential housing
- hole 9 throws towards bathrooms and has a "mando" to go around them
- some limited risk of errant throws entering ball golf course
- concrete tees could be slightly bigger
- a little tight with other park activities

Other Thoughts:

Wildwood DGC is a very new disc golf course in a beautiful city park. This is a very well-maintained park that had maintenance going on while I was there; it is clearly kept up well. Of the 3 courses I played in Nebraska, this was probably #3 in terms of total elevation change, which is to say it was "moderately hilly", with the others being Peru State College and Hummel Park which were both incredibly, shockingly hilly for a state like Nebraska - mostly known for cornfields, in my opinion.

Pet Peeve: There is a permanent sign on this course telling you to rate the course 5 stars on UDisc. I don't know if this is a UDisc-backed sign or just something they cooked up, but I hate this trend of trying to coerce perfect reviews like AirBnB, Uber, etc. To all, please don't let DGCR become this. The objective reviews are EVERYTHING to this community.

Now that I have that out of the way, this is one of the most put-together 9 hole courses I've ever played. It's certainly not my favorite - as I tend to love on the more rugged, dense woods niners with huge dropoffs and whatnot - but this course is much more polished than that. All of the equipment is top notch, the disc golf is hard, and this will be one of the longer niners you play both in physical length and time. There are uphill and downhill shots, 2 holes that play over/around a pond hazard, mature tree obstacles, and lots of distance.

For the cons, the concrete tees could be slightly bigger, but this is mostly a nit. Most of the cons are safety issues which definitely are notable here. For as good as most of this course is, the safety issues irked me. A few holes play right across the park drive from the ball golf course and a really errant throw could fly onto their fairway - not ideal. Hole 7 throws over the park drive, and overthrowing the basket could land in someone's backyard. Hole 8 then throws parallel to these backyards. In general, the holes are a little tight to areas of the park people may be walking in too. Hole 9 then throws towards the restroom building which seemed like it could have been planned better.

While these cons are notable to me, this is still a well executed course is most other ways. It's excellent disc golf experience otherwise, and worth a stop if you like niners or are driving from Kansas City up to Omaha. I didn't think a 3 did this justice, as 3 is "good", and this course to me is more in the "very good" category in most ways; while the safety hazards do hold it back, I decided it warranted the 3.5. You'll be hard pressed to find many niners this long or challenging and it's a good one to mix in with other 18s if you're around. I don't think I'd go out of my way to go back here, because there are plenty of other courses to try, but it's a fun course and well worth the stop.
