Stumbles into goodness 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 11, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is really nestled around a scenic park out in Katy, west of Houston. Looking at the map I was afraid it would play around the bayou ditch like a lot of Houston courses, but it only comes into play on one hole. The rest of the course plays through some little hills and a walking trail in the park.

The baskets are interesting- they're green like Prodigy baskets, but looking at them I think they're still disCatchers. I liked the baskets, just an interesting choice to go with another company's color.

The tees are pros and cons, but the pro is their size and being concrete. Tee signs on every hole as well.

The design is pretty good, in terms of distances and shot selection. It's not the kind of place that can really get away with par 4's or a par 5, but there are some rip it holes at 350, and at least one over 400. I liked the variety of the course though; I never felt bored or slogging through.

The amount of hills and slopes does give this course a little more elevation play than most Houston courses.

Cons:

The biggest con for me was how caddy-wompus the tee pads are. I know every reviewer has mentioned it, but there literally are two holes where the basket is 90 degrees off the teepad, so you run up the short way. Almost none of them are dead on. BUT there is an arrow painted on the tees to the correct basket so you know where you're supposed to throw.

I don't know if that was because of a redesign, and it was easier to move baskets than repour tees (which I get), but it is what it is.

The walking trail does come into play a LOT. On a Friday morning, with maybe 4 or 5 walkers during my round, I had to stop several times, or throw blind at the trail. The playground is near one hole. As a forehand dom I didn't have as much as issue as my RHBH friends, but it's still a hazard.

There's nothing particularly "wow" about the course, or anything you've never seen before. The most memorable, unique feature here is tee pad situation lol

Other Thoughts:

This is still a fun round. If you catch the park without a lot of walkers, and get used to throwing at angles off the tees, It's really not a bad round. I would be happy to go back, get a few more of those birds.

Great course in its infancy. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 3, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a very good course that will become amazing with age. Very technical course if played with Mando's and out of bounds. Elevation changes, water hazards and rough a plenty. Please read the cons of other reviewers. They exist, but I think the designer is playing the long game. The tall wild roughs are part of a county grew water initiative. These roughs will grow denser and taller forming fairways. Several trees will become so large that they will be natural Mando's, but you can tell where they are intended. This really explains most of the tee pads that are said to be pointing the wrong direction. I also play all paths as out of bounds. The tee signs show you the path you are intended to take.

Cons:

Ok, I felt the need to defend this course but right now, it has issues. Hole one has an open field is right by the entrance. Many people lounge and play here. Hole two finished near the playground. Again the designed route is left around the hill. But right now there is nothing stoping you from going straight over it. Most holes have a similar issue, be really careful or play the hole "the way it was designed".

Other Thoughts:

I can't wait to play this course in 5, 10, 20 years. It will be so much fun. Right now it is a course with unclear rules or boundaries.

Unsafe & sideways installed tee pads 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 26, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice park, manicured and mowed. Great tees, hexagon concrete, nice and graded to ground level, safe and easy to run up and throw from. Good new baskets, signage was mostly accurate. Excellently poured and graded tee boxes, the concrete guys did a great job (more on the install of these later).
The park had some very good features, and was obviously entirely new and likely entirely designed by a landscape architecture firm.
It opened in November of 2016, TBG Partners, the landscape architectural group that designed the park, they appear to be excellent park designers, the park and bathrooms and pond is awesome. https://coveringkaty.com/loca...-is-now-open/
They spent money, large boulders moved in place, playground is awesome, pavilion is very nice with stone and timbers. So much went into this park.

Cons:

SO much went into this park, and so little went into vetting the disc golf design and installation is pathetic.
OMG, this design much have been done by a non-disc golfer. Hole 3 was over a small mound, and the basket was about 35' from a children's playground - keep in mind the blind shot that would not be able to tell if kids were playing in front of the basket....
This was just the beginning of dangerous throw after dangerous throw. Hole 10, 11, 12, 16, 18 all have baskets within 15' of a concrete walking path, some under 6' away.

Hole 12 looked just like hole 3, blind shot over a hill, no playground here, but a walking path that was not in sight from the tee... its only a matter of time till soneone gets hit here.
Hole 18, decent par 4, except it was over 2 walking paths.

Keep in mind this park is adjacent to a high school, and at 3:15 there were kids everywhere and the track team was running on the paths...

More on the design, I think I threw my Roc on almost every hole, putter on several, and about 3 drivers. It was the same shot over and over and over...

Other Thoughts:

OK, so the safely is a con - also, if I recall at least 3-5 of the tee were pointing in the entirely WRONG DIRECTION. Hole 10's tee was looking directly at hole 16's basket, and hole 10s basket was at a 70 degree angle off the left of the tee. So you basically run up sideways across the 12-14' long tee and its now a 5' long tee as you are running up the side ways direction. This happened several more times on this course - HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?

This is crying shame, this course was not likely cheap at all, the design is dangerous, and the installation is a sham, put the tee here (ok cool, noting on what direction the hexagon might want to face though, that part didn't make the blueprint, or they lost the blueprint after hole 9).

Who puts multiple tees SIDEWAYS in the ground? Someone who has no idea what they are doing, that's who.

I love that parks are spending more money on courses, but this one will be a shining example as to why parks should be hiring disc golf designers over park designers. Its a crying shame.

Last thought, how in the world was this course a 2.9 rated course - defore me review, seriously, this one is not good, its dangerous and very poorly installed, you know for disc golf.

The Perfect Place for Your First Ace 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 19, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

18 holes, concrete tee pads, and signage are new and in great shape. Good line of sight for most holes. Well maintained. Convenient parking. On site security. Entertaining course for less experienced players, like me.

Cons:

Heavy pedestrian traffic particularly on the weekends. Several holes cross the side walks and most people pay not attention to disc golfers. As others have stated, some tee pads and hole markers are not properly oriented. The course is short and easy. On the flip side, this is the place for your first ace!

After playing many courses since my original review I had to down grade this to 2.5.

Other Thoughts:

They have recently cleared out all the wild vegetation and underbrush. It opened up the course tremendously. No more long searches bushwhacking through the weeds to find your disk.

Pros:

Nice tees nice signs nice baskets nice sidewalk that goes all the way around the park so if u wanna play disc ur family could walk around the park or play. At the kids park with plenty of benches nice bathrooms. Also a easy course to get a negative score

Cons:

Pathway from threes basket to fours T pad is really rough and wet even when it doesn't rain because of the sprinklers and needs to be mowed or they need to put mulch or rocks down 10 is kinda confusing u wanna throw to the basket straight ahead but it's off too the left 14s T pad is kind of confusing and makes you think that you're throwing in the opposite direction and the sign is also actually facing the wrong way when you're on the T pad I think it should face the way that you're throwing but it's facing the opposite direction.

Other Thoughts:

If your an experience disc golfer you'll be able to know how to throw the disc even if it is not pointing in the right direction or if the sign is pointing wrong . after the first time going here it'll be like second nature what hole goes to which basket... so the first time playing is kind of confusing but after that you'll remember which basket goes to what pad.. people say that hole three is dangerous it is but if you know how to play you know how to throw and how hard to throw a S curve or a Heiser over the park will be just fine and if you don't know how to play then just Play it safe the best holes are blind shots it makes it more challenging and a lot more fun all the complaints about the grass being long that's just another challenge as well, it makes you better to try to keep it in the fairway and all that is a part of the game walking through grass as far as pedestrians go waiting is inevitable if you're that inpatient and mad about waiting for people to move out of the way then you shouldn't be playing disc golf get over it !!!! also as far as other T pads go if you're afraid you're going to hit somebody with a disk that's what yelling four ! is for or heads up these people that are reviewing the course are making a bigger deal than it is .....a fuss over nothing .... losing a disc in tall grass waiting for people, blind holes ,long shots water hazards that's all part of that game... I do talk about how some T pads and some signs are facing the wrong direction or it seems like they're facing the wrong direction that's just a heads up to people that haven't played the course and are reading the review for the first time . Like I said after the first time playing here you know what is what and it's not really that big of a deal

This Parks Department Has More Money Than Disc Golf Smarts! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 30, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

I really liked this course. It was a very comfortable fit for my playing level, that is old, rec player with sub 300' arm. I invision this course as being a links style course, like the golf courses in Scotland. It was slightly different from any course I can think of and I enjoyed playing, even as it's flaws were driving me nutsy. This course would be a 4.0 in a world with no liability, no lawyers, no judges, no victims and especially, no lawsuits. As the course stands, it's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

There are many things to like here. The humongous tee pads allow you to change your angle although often you're throwing from across the pad. The baskets are very pretty green with black numbers on the band. The tee signs are lovely. Too bad they don't face always the correct way.

The # 9 peninsula hole was cool and very pretty, giving you options on which route to take. The negative here was trying to time my throw to avoid not get sprayed from any of the three sprinklers that were hitting the # 9 pad. While I was trying to stay dry, I realized my bag was being soaked.

Cons:

# 3 is horrible. At 288', it's not long but there is a small hill in your way so you're throwing blind. The easy route is a hyser over the busy, children's play area. This hole is only going to get more dangerous as the newly planted tree on the top of the hill matures. Most rec type players are not going worry about some Mando on the tee sign. The park's department could plant a row of bushy trees in front of the play area or they could put up a high fence or some netting.

Players teeing off on # 6 are in danger of getting hit on drives from players teeing off on # 5.

The course plays over the walking path continuously. Someone will get hit, It's inevitable.

How much concrete ($) was wasted building humongous trapezoid tee pads which are probably twice as big as needed?

Tee pads often are not pointing at the basket.

Tee signs are placed forward, backward and sideways.

Personally, I liked the 18th hole, thought it was fun and challenging. But...
The tee sign faces backwards.
The tee pad is off by about 45 degrees.
The route I took had me throwing over two walking paths and a park bench.
Someone had just started walking up the path as was ready to tee off. I had to wait quite a while for her to clear.
So my question is ? How much more can you do to #^%* up a hole?

On # 14, a tree is planted right in front of tee pad. As that tree matures, it might leave you with no where to throw.

Other Thoughts:

There is so much for me to like about this course but the safety issues, the screwy tee pads and the backwards sign made me crazy. Some things could be remedied easily. Unbolt the backwards signs and mount them on the correct side of the pole. Others, like the tee pads, present a major job to fix. The problem with # 3 has to be dealt with right now. You can't wait until some sweet little two year old takes one in the mouth before you act. Mandos might help but rec players won't recognize them and many will ignore them anyway. One accident and this course might be shut down and that would be a great loss for the area disc golfers.

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Course drains fairly well
-The baskets are nice since they are new
-Long concrete tee pads a plus
-Good course for beginners since the holes aren't very long
-Easy to find your way around

Cons:

-The rough is getting out of control but that maybe intentional
-Watch out for poison ivy and possible slithering critters
-Don't be left on holes 8 (water), 11 and 12
-Kids at playgournd, walkers and joggers can be a constant issue so be careful

Other Thoughts:

Not a bad course but will certainly change over time as trees
and brush matures. The course is well laid out so there isn't much wasted walking. There is no shade so bring water or protection from the wind so beginners should pick a calmer day. This course is closest to my house but I often venture out to throw longer holes.

Casual Course Could Go Pro 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The tee pads aren't as wrong as some people insist they are. A few are flipped backwards with the wide end at the front, but who cares? Most are at a strange angle if you stare at the basket, but if you look at the signs you can tell there's an intended mando around a sapling or area of weeds.

Funny to complain the course is too simple and then ignore the details which would make it challenging.

This course is infinitely better maintained, laid out, and groomed than any Houston course inside Beltway 8 (what's left of them). This course will make the forcible move to the suburbs tolerable.

One of the main reasons is so many Houston courses either (a) used to be technical until the drought of 2011 killed all the trees and now they're too simple/short or (b) are monstrously big and only playable by gorillas who can throw 500+ feet from the tee in 20m/h wind or (c) completely over-leveraged with players or pedestrians or both.

This course at first seems too short and too simple, but if you pay careful attention, you see it is not. Sure, it looks like a 200' straight throw, but look at the tee pad and the sign. The tee pad isn't mis-laid, they've set up a mando around a sapling or a section of tall weeds. Once these trees are mature, this will be a very difficult course.

If you treat all the unmowed areas as OB and treat the paths as stroke & distance, this becomes a very difficult course given the typical wind levels. Now look at tee pad alignment and the signs and make assumptions about mandos and this really gets challenging. I could see this being an excellent tournament course in ten years when the trees fill out -- provided it is maintained as well as it is now.

A clear overall course sign & clear signs at each fully poured concrete tee pad.

While the water is in play a few times, this isn't one of those "how many discs do you dare to lose" courses.

Cons:

The unmowed rough can be 3-6' tall in summer and is full of bees and who knows what all else. Go disc diving at your own risk.

#14 truly has a mid-laid tee pad, I suspect they moved the basket after the sign and pad were done. #16 isn't great either, but isn't a complete nightmare. Given how well this course is done, it would be great to see the reversed pads and these two updated.

Other Thoughts:

If they fix a few tee pads and kept the OB areas to less than 3' high so you can find discs without being eaten alive by animals, this would be a top tier course.

Bring a walking stick to beat down weeds when disc hunting.

Bring discs you don't care about for #9 onto the peninsula in case it skips into the pond.

Bring a hat, water and sun screen as there is _NO_ shade on this course whatsoever.

Pros:

The baskets are quality catchers, the pads are flat concrete, the park is nice and the course plays pretty easy for an under par round. Its clean here and I did not find it difficult to navigate at all, the next tee sign is visble from the basket and the tee signs are great!

Cons:

It's way over stated about the tee pads being misaligned, holes 10, 14, 16, and 18 were the ones that were off and it really isnt that bad, you still have a concrete pad to throw from. Maybe a few too many 200-240 foot holes with little to no obstacles. Hole 3 playing near the playground.

Wait on walkers.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed this course and am shocked at the two and less ratings for such a small flaw on the tee pads.

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

The huge positives about Willow Fork park lie in the incredible amount of sculpting done in the installation of this park. It resulted in a beautiful set of ponds and some rolling mounds to create pretty vistas all around. The disc golf course boasts enormous trapezoidal concrete tees (much more than needed), and some really good quality course signage, leading to readily visible, green banded high end DisCatcher baskets. They did not scrimp on the quality of materials here.

The course is clearly designed for beginners, as most of the holes are reachable for an ace-deuce opportunity for most Intermediate players and above. The lines of flight are occasionally forced off the tee by wanting to avoid going in the prairie grass rough or 'out of bounds; on the plethora of walkways that interact with the fairways. One or two holes do have trees planted to force a particular line.

The prettiest hole is also the one with the greatest level of gut-check: hole 9 plays about 200' to a peninsula basket with water on three sides. beginners may want to throw just left of the path side bench and play for a three

Cons:

The biggest complaint here would be the fact that so many of the tees are angled oddly away from the target, as if to say the designer meant to force players to go a certain route, but there is nothing keeping you from going right at the baskets in almost every case. I worry about the mound on hole 12 not only making that a 'blind' pin position, but also obscuring any pedestrian (or child on a bike) coming around the bend unseen. The other safety issue is hole 3, where the rhbh hyzer line goes right over the playground. Doesn't matter if they declare a 'mando'. People will throw that line. In all, there is way too much likelihood here that, someday, an overzealous disc golfer will forget his responsibility to only throw when it is safe to do so.

A less important issue here would be the fact that there is no 'next tee' signage, and first timers will have to bring along a copy of the map to be sure they're walking to the correct tee and throwing at the right basket.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this is a pretty course in a beautiful park, that has as its intended audience families and beginning players. It might benefit more accomplished players for working on their 'short game', as well, but don't expect a challenge.

Pros:

-new discatchers and large concrete tees
-detailed tee signs, course map at the start
-minor rolling hills in play and a small pond
-easy rec layout, good for beginners, ace run birdie fest for experienced players
-hole 9 is a fun peninsula hole next to the pond

Cons:

-tee pads installed incorrectly, several of them are pointed up to 90 degrees the wrong direction
-the entire course plays along the pedestrian paths through the park, sooner or later someone will get hurt at this course
-for those responsible players, you'll spend a LOT of time waiting on pedestrians at this course, it's a busy park
-few trees come into play on most holes
-there needs to be a clearly visible mando sign on hole 3 to avoid the playground; it will probably be ignored and it will still be a dangerous hole but it needs to be there at least

Other Thoughts:

I like the idea of this course. It's right next to the high school and middle school and has some cool minor rolling hills and a pond in the center of the park. The course plays clockwise around the pond but unfortunately so do the pedestrian paths. The course plays along and over the paths all the way around the park. It is a safety disaster considering this is a rec course and will attract rec players. It's also the only 18 hole course in the area so I imagine it will get a lot of traffic.

There are a few interesting holes that make good use of the softly undulating land and hole 9 has an awesome peninsula green. That said, it's a bit much for a rec design but at least more experienced players will be able to look forward to one cool hole. Hole 18 is 460' from an elevated tee; that one is pretty fun also. Intermediate players should be trying to get into double digits here, more experienced players should be looking for 18 birdies.

I'm not sure which is the bigger disappointment, the safety issues of the design or how poorly the tee boxes were poured. At least half of them are pointed a bit off from the target or the ideal fairway line, at least one is as far off as 90 degrees from the basket. It is a shame that they spent the money on this course and it turned out like it did. There are only 2 holes that don't have a pedestrian path in play. This (unfortunately) should have been a boring 9 hole course that plays around the absolute edges of the park if safety were a priority. As it is now, best case scenario the pedestrians lose their park to disc golfers, worst case someone gets hit in the face.

Pros:

Beautiful new baskets. Beautiful 16' long concrete tee pads. Beautiful tee signs and course map. Restrooms available. Solid recreational-level course with holes averaging under 250'. Generally easy to navigate, trivial if you have a map. Reasonably fun course with a ton of birdie opportunities, but I can see Advanced players getting bored quickly here. One water hole with the basket on a peninsula is a nice inclusion. Finishing with a 400' hole allowing you to finally throw a full power drive is satisfying.

Cons:

Sadly, many of the beautiful tee pads are pointed in the wrong direction. A couple of them are 90 degrees off or perpendicular to where you want to throw. There's really no good explanation other than design/installation by someone with no clue how the course will actually be played.

The distances on the tee signs are routinely off by 10, 20, or 30 feet.

Hole #3 is a disaster waiting to happen. The obvious line for a RHBH player is an easy hyzer over the playground. Very dangerous for the type of player this course will attract.

Too many baskets and fairways are close to, or cross, the walking path. That leads to long waits for cautious players or dangerous conditions for pedestrians with reckless players.

Other Thoughts:

I was pleased to see the money put into the course for quality equipment but disappointed by the apparent lack of consulting with anyone with disc golf experience prior to installation.

I played the course on a Sunday morning and the park was reasonably busy with non-disc golfers and there were probably four or five groups of disc golfers on the course... the type with a couple discs each. It was a scary combination.

I'd really like to rate this course higher, but the tee pads and proximity to the walking path are big problems.
