Not worth the drive. drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 19, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Senic

Cons:

Not maintained, too much water for an amatuer.

Other Thoughts:

Bring all of your old discs that you don;t want any more, and your swear jar, for all the water holes. One of the walks, ( from 15 to 16 I think ) was literally a 1/2 mile. Two of the baskets are just gone right now. The wife and I just felt beat up after playing, ( I'm 850 rated if that helps for context ) I would wait until someone takes on the project of revamping this course.

Best Church Property course yet 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 4, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cement Tee pads
PDGA approved baskets (A lot of private church courses have home made baskets)
Tee signs, while some were not perfect, all where there and readable.
Very wide arraignment of holes taking everyone out of your bag.

Cons:

Some of the holes are rough in that they are not mowed very often or at all.
A few holes are very close to the creek, with recent rains, these were dangerous holes to play.
Along with the creek being a little high and muddy, there was a lot of water on several of the holes, my shoes did get soaked by the end of the round.

Other Thoughts:

This is a good course and fun to play.

From short technical holes, to long power shots, this course has a little of everything.

First off, RESPECT the fact that this is a private course that is free to play, check in with the office if you are playing on a week day before 5pm, they only want to know who is on the course for security reasons (they are a school too)

2nd, do not bring Beer or other substances not acceptable to a church. It is a simple request of the church, if you have a problem with it, play one of the many other courses in the area.
Hole 1 tees off near the street and is your typical easy simi wide open shot.
Hole 2 is a dogleg right, it is the opening before the ditch, don't overthrow, it is not an easy comeback.
Hole 3 is a nice long turnover. You hyzer out, your in a ditch that does hold water if it has been raining.
Hole 4 is a longer shot across the drainage pond, which today had a lot of water in it.
Hole 5 you need to cross the creek and the hole is going back towards the main street. Risky shot as there is a ditch behind and the creek to the left of the basket.
These back 3 holes have not been mowed this year and the grass is pretty tall.
Hole 6 is another shot like 5, just longer.
Hole 7 has a lot of risk rewards, the basket is across the creek, short shots will be in the creek, but there is some space to land not in the actual creek.
Holes 8 and 9 are risky with the creek being high. Both are hyzer shots.
Hole 10 is a nice tunnel shot, don't hyzer out or you are in the creek.
Hole 11 is a long open shot across the drainage pond ditch with the basket back up into the trees.
Hole 12 is a long hole with a couple of options on how to approach the basket.
Hole 13 is a long hole down the drainage creek with the basket up past the tree line. There was water in the ditch today and I had to wade to get my shot that hyzered out on the other side of the ditch.
Hole 14 is shorter than the sign says, nice little anhyzer.
Hole 15 is another anhyzer shot, although you can throw over the top for a hyzer.
Hole 16 is a long anyhyzer shot or layup your hyzer for an easy 3
Hole 17 is a true risk reward shot, if you think you can throw 350, go for it, hyzer over the pond. If you are a chicken like me, lay it up past the pine trees to get your easy 3
Hole 18 is a longer defined fairway shot with areas of rough to stay out of
Hole 19 is either a big hyzer over the baseball field, or anhyzer around it.
Hole 20 is a space filler, simple 240ft hole with not a single obstacle in the way. Worst hole on the course.
Hole 21 is also wide open, but 366ft towards the main office building with a little drainage ditch in front of the basket. (only spot with no water ironically today as I was in the ditch for an easy bird)

Pros:

great landscape. Indeed the grass is cut and the course is well kept. All pads are cement. This course really long holes as well as the occasional shorties. There is a creek that runs through the course(4-10). There are 10 foot drop offs around these holes. Heavily wooded also where a shot off the fairway could make or break your par attempt. The creek is not very wide, but is deeper than waste high in some areas. Definitely lost a disc in the creek. Went in after it and was unsuccessful in finding it, but pulled up another disc. Nothing dampens your spirits more than losing your disc and just when you think you have found yours, you pull up another disc!!!

Cons:

no alcohol allowed on course because its on church/school grounds. I happened to go on the windest day which stunk. If you happen to throw your disc in the woods, there were a lot pricker bushes. My legs came out of that course with some major scrapes. I really disliked the smell around holes 11-15 because you shooting next to a crapy looking farm/junkyard or something.

Other Thoughts:

Really enjoyed the course. Holes 19-21 were very open and even managed a few birds. There are some holes that have tall grass and some standing water in random areas. I loved the idea that if you threw your shot over the fence the local boy scouts made ladders to get over safer.

Pros:

I really enjoy the variety in the hole types. From difficult creek hazards to wide open grip it and rip it. As a LHBH, it makes it very interesting on hole 2 alone. My worse hole possible. Also, as a beginner with only 4 months under my belt.. I strive to aim these challenges head on. love it and look to perfecting my skills every week.

Fun times with MidnightBiker 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 7, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

+A good mix of tight woody holes and open bombs.
+Good signage on most of the holes with good spacious teepads
+man made elevation worked into some of the holes
+Use of the creek makes you decide between going for it, or laying up safe.
+Good drainage for a Houston course, most of it was dry save for a few areas that are meant to come up when rain is heavy.
+Baseball field and property fences used for OB makes otherwise boring holes into more technical ones.

Cons:

-Area around 16-18 seemed neglected, with lots of fallen branches everywhere.
-One or two of the later holes seemed like filler holes, just to get you from the previous hole to the next one.

Other Thoughts:

After playing several other courses that were waterlogged, Windwood stood out just on its dryness, in a not easy to dry place.
The front holes are mostly in the woods and along the creek, calling for more definite lines and technical shots, as well as judicious selection of landing zones as you lay up to the pin, so that you stay out of the water.
The back holes open up and let you air out your discs while keeping you restricted to specific lines.
Thanks to Midnightbiker for showing me around!

Pros:

21 Holes of great play can be found here. From a straight-ahead shot on hole 1 to twists and turns through the woods around the church with an excellent mini ravine up-throw on hole 7 across the creek. Every hole on this course is a challenge in itself. Personally, I loved the variety of holes here. Throws on holes 4 and 11 across the retention pond And two throws across ponds on 14 and 17. The holes are not overly long here, but they don't need to be. I parred two just trying to keep my discs out of jeopardy, especially on holes 4 through 11 in the woods by the creek and again on holes 14 and 17, If you are a technical player, this is your course!

Cons:

Too many chances to lose a disc. Found the footing treacherous on some of the climbs up and down around the creek and retention pond, Hole 13 is a straightaway. If you cannot throw straight down a narrow embankment, your disc goes in a watery-filled ditch. No signs on holes 12 through 16, just posts and tees.

Other Thoughts:

Best church course I have played yet! some thought went into this one. Great place to play. If you're in North Houston, check this one out. The church people are friendly and you can pick up a course map in the office. Always nice to have people willing to share a course as great as this one is.

Great course!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 8, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is another beautiful course!! Great map near the first t-pad shows the entire course, pads, flight paths and distances. Great use of shots here. Some longer holes, a few shorter one, all mixed in very well. There is a big creek that comes into play on a few holes. An errant shot or unlucky kick off a tree will result in a wet or lost disc, as there are some deep holes in the creek and it was super dirty the day I played. The course flows really well, and all the locals were super friendly and helpful navigating. New signs on the front 9 were excellent!! Great picture of the hole, flight path and distance to the basket. Although this course is only a year or so old, its beat in rather well. Its a heavily played course and it shows. I liked the how the holes along the creek required a good bit of techincal and accurate shots, and there are some great risk/reward holes as well. The back nine open up a little more for those that have a big arm and can bomb shots. Great use of the land and terrain makes this a great course to play. Although I didn't see any trash cans along the course, it was very clean and I noticed very little trash scattered about, which was nice to see. Maybe it being on church grounds helps

Cons:

No benches or trash cans. Benches would be a nice addition as lots of people and families play this course and there were quite a few holes we had to wait on. Having a place to sit and rest would be nice. I realize this is a newer course and is a constant work in progress, so I would imagine benches will be in place in the future. The only other drawback for me were all shots seemed to be rather straight or hyzer shots, no anny shots at all for a RHBH player, but its not really that big of deal.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of the best courses in Houston. I like the mix of the wooded/creek holes and the wide open holes. The last 3 holes seemed to be added to avoid a long walk from 18 to the parking lot. Its always great to see families playing the game of disc golf, husbands, wives and their little kids were all over the course when I played, and this can only help the sport grow and possibly groom a future Pro player!! Overall this an excellent course that will definitely help you improve your game. I would recommend this course to anyone, and I found it worth the 1 hour drive to play. A must play course, in my opinion.

Intermediate 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 30, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Course is set on the large grounds of a large church, with plenty of space devoted to disc golf. I don't think anything other than random pedestrians would ever get in the way.
- Majority of the course is set in a couple of forested areas, from pretty open to pretty tight. Some of the easier holes are on flat ground with plenty of mature trees to force good accuracy. Other ones utilize a wide, shallow valley or a deep ditch that brings some elevation into play. Tougher holes have much tighter lines, with forced routes to the basket. There are low ceilings and lots of trees to deflect any shots that stray too far.
- Lots of rugged terrain is present in many spots, both in the fairway and near the basket. A good hyzer over a big depression on #7 is a great risk/reward, and there are some baskets with hills and valleys to take into account.
- Four or five holes have a pretty big creek in play, always on the left side. Any typical RHBH shot that hyzers out, or has a bad kick, can end up in the water very easily. The terrain here almost helps this, with a sharp dropoff to the water in many spots. Hole #13 also has water on the right, and #17 has a small pond in front of the basket. Plenty of spots with big punishment.
- Good amount of protected baskets, mostly due to water hazards, but also thanks to rugged terrain and well positioned trees. Accuracy is very important off the tee and on approach, to keep an open line to the basket.
- Fun ace run/island hole, with a clearly marked and mowed circle around the basket. Good variety in hole length overall, with over half of them at 350' or above.
- Good teepads, which are well marked with the hole number, and good baskets. Signs don't have any maps or lengths, but it is pretty easy to figure out. Map in front does all the talking.

Cons:

- Course is more or less flat, with most shots on flat ground. Big arms will be able to go over the various dips and valleys pretty easily, though they could be a big factor for smaller arms.
- A ton of holes need a straight or RHBH hyzer, with little to get in the way. There are still tough lines to hit, but they are pretty standard in shape and similar to each other in spots.

Other Thoughts:

- This a very solid course, that uses the available terrain very, very well. The shots around the creek have great risk/reward, chances are an ace run could end up wet or in some nasty rough. A lot of baskets also have a trick to them, or some sort of obstacle, to keep things challenging. Should be a fun time for almost any skill level, with good variety in length and difficulty. Might be a bit too hazardous for a beginner, though.

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Practice baskets. Also a great mix of holes, many technical holes near a creek that can be very rewarding for a good shot and equally punishing for an errant one. 5-10 all around a creek makes for neat scenery with good risk/reward shots. 4 and 11 just plain fun. Mostly cement boxes, and trash cans.

Cons:

The smell of a nearby pig farm on 14 and a long walk back from 18 - although I've heard there will be more holes installed on the walk. Ive seen at least one snake each time I've played, but it's TX in the summer. No points off for that, just a warning for others..

Other Thoughts:

Great addition to Houston area courses. Make sure you check in on the week; players new to the course can get a map which isn't really necessary - signs are up to point to the next hole in the confusing areas.

Great technical course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Has 2 practice baskets (one near the tee box on hole 1, and the other near the playground after hole 18)
- Clear intent of design on each hole makes for an enjoyable round
- Great map and scorecard available if you go between 8-5 during the week
- Good variety of holes: some technical tight holes that require accuracy, and some you can just air it out on)

Cons:

- Long walk from end of 18th hole back to parking lot (new practice basket next to playground gives you something to do on the trek back)
- Drainage: several holes require you to walk through some thick marshy-like grasses. Rough pathways have been established
- Creek: this is probably biased because I lost a disc in the creek on hole #9. But, seriously don't be surprised if you lose a disc or two.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed playing this course even though I'm still a beginner. I could see this course providing a challenge to all levels of disc golfers. Everyone should be prepared to either lose a disc or search for discs on several holes that have the creek running through them or thick grasses/under brush.

Newcomers to the sport might want to stay away from this course for awhile, or practice at one of the 2 practice baskets for awhile.

Beautiful 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 3, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful course, very enjoyable round with a nice challenge but not overly frustrating.

Tees. Nice concrete tees (on nearly every hole).

Baskets. A practice basket at the beginning, all baskets are in good shape.

Parking/Amenities. Check in at the school keeps out the sex offenders, no worries of being molested on this one. Large parking area, score card and pencil provided.

Not Crowded. Though this course is getting more popular by the day, it is still rather quiet out there. Location, difficulty, and the need to check in probably keep a lot of people off the course, most people playing are rather serious players, no riffraff, no crowds.

Clean/Well Maintained. Very little trash, well manicured fairways, and well maintained grounds all make for an eye appealing experience.

Variety of Holes. Each hole was a welcome change from the previous, with several nice ace runs, good risk/reward shots, large variety of shots and line shaping required, yeah not many straight up anny shots, but I'm not going to complain., none of the holes are terribly long though they may seem longer because of the difficulty.

Good use of water. Water comes into play on several holes, though it isn't terribly threatening most of the time. The stream meandering past several holes can eat discs, but if you know where it went in you should be able to find it, the retaining pond wasn't much of a threat, unless you have an unreliable/shank of a drive.

Cons:

Not For Beginners. May be overly challenging for a beginner with some of the narrow fairways and water, also, if I was introduced to disc golf on this course I would be sorely disappointed when I found out that most courses are not this nice.

A poor throw may end in a lost disc. Yeah, this is true on most any course I suppose - but the thick rough and water make it more likely here if you're attached to any specific disc.

Yeah, it's a bit of a walk from 18 to the parking lot, we found the soccer fields a good place for a Long Drive Competition (this is where I injured my knee, obviously won't hold that against the course, but a point of note for myself).

Other Thoughts:

A great course, very enjoyable, nice challenge, not overly frustrating, I wish I wasn't 1500 miles away or I'd play it more often. Thanks SpringDGLover and ThePatrick for a great round

One of the most fun courses around. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 13, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very fun course which is great exposure for our sport considering there is a school on the property with plenty of kids enjoying the "Frisbees" I really enjoy the atmosphere of this course and the Church that has been nothing but helpful when it comes to hosting tournaments
Even though most of the holes can be 2'd the scoring spread is very good in the sense that there are many chances to also 4 an easy hole by making a dumb mistake...CREEK! I initially thought this was just an easy birdie course but in the last PDGA event a 1000 rated round was right around par much to my surprise.
Anyway Windwood is a great place to play on the NW side of Houston and is one of my favorite courses in town.

No longer "Pros"....course overview from my perspective.
Hole 1- 285ft or so with bushes on the left and a ditch if you go too far- Pretty much need to birdie.

Hole 2- Probably only 270ft in a straight line from the tee but this is actually a good three and nearly undeuceable. Throw your drive through a gap 25ft away and nestle in the landing zone 230-240ft away (making sure to avoid the rough long and especially short as you will have few looks to the basket.). From the landing zone it is about 100ft to the basket with a large anhyzer gape or smaller hyzer line to the pin.

Hole 3- One of my favoritesI A 315ish hole where you need to aim left and play either a tight S or late right turn. There is a large ditch short of the pin and scrubby trees behind leaving those who throw long with tricky putts/

Hole-4 280 or so down across a drainage area with the pin sitting on the other side on a 15ft upslope. This hole gets tricky since long shots skip away leaving you with a long comeback putt with a steep dropoff if you miss. Landing short means a tough uphill putt (usually windy) with misses having to hit tough 3 saves,

Hole 5- Short (220ft) shot where you just need to throw straight and soft down the middle allowing your disc to hyzer 10 15ft at the end and you are parked. Go long and you have a steep ditch (15-25ft putts with the chains 5ft above your head)...DON"T GO LEFT.....why would you ever go left here (reasons: throwing a driver that skips left into the creek) Don't throw a driver on this hole!

Hole 6- 275ft low hyzer ( I actually suggest a driver here. :p.

Hole 7- Very tough birdie for being under 300ft . The drive must flex before a large tree and fall back left. Tough to control distance and lift from the wind. Wall of trees 25ft behind the basket.

Hole 8- short 230ft hole with a creek close on the left. There are both a RHFH/LHBH route high and left and a low hyzer line to the right.that leave longer putts on average looking at the water.

Hole 9- Hole nine is a <200ft hole with the creek very close on the left. I advise throwing a slow disc to the right of the basket allowing the hill to slide the disc down). Even "bad" shots usually have a shot at 2.

Hole 10- 330ft right down a beautiful tunnel fairway (not super tight) with a bush 40ft in front of the basket narrowing the fairway on the left.

11 and 12 were also nice being 430 and 390 with a slight anhyzer flex needed to get the birdie.

Hole 11- 425Ft over the drainage areas to a narrowing/protected green. Nasty rough on the right starting 150ft short of the basket.

Hole 12- 375ft hole that calls for a punch/turnover shot to get to the pin or a very wide sweeping hyzer that plays much longer than 375ft. Surprisingly hard to get a deuce on this one.

Hole 13- "Pig Hole" 510ft with a large ditch to the left of the 35ft fairway. The ditch isn't OB and a drive long and left leaves a decent look into the basket.

Hole 14. 375ft Slight hyzer...or wide anhyzer defined by large groups of trees.

Hole 15- 375ft Hole where the wide hyzer seems to be the best option. They just planted a large amount of small trees down the fairway that make getting a good look for a putt harder/luckier.

Hole 16- 400ft hole with two options...Wide anhyzer over an Ob chain-link fence or a punch straight down the right hand side of the fairway that slowly hyzers at the end of its flight.

Hole 17- 395ft hyzer that must fade before a large pine tree 300ft away or risk goin OB in the "lake" short of the basket.

Hole 18- 415ft up a hill and then slowly sloping back towards the basket. Trail on the right was OB at the last tournament but usually played as casual/

Hole 19- 475ft hole with a fairway alongside a baseball field. The fairway curves to the right with the outfield fence. Long grass to the left is played as Ob making long drives risky.

Hole 20- Island hole that is around 240ft with a 30ft radius (60ft landing area) . Go to concrete drop zone if you miss on the drive.

hole 21- 365ft wide open hyzer with a small ditch running to the right of the basket...small wooden bridge 20ft long of the pin.

Cons:

Limb on hole 12 should probably be trimmed to allow for a higher ceiling.

"Pig Hole"- I'm just not a fan of this hole under the current OB rules (way too easy to just throw left VS going down the "fairway"...I wish the Ditch and beyond was still OB.

Hole 15- Small trees really make it a poke-and-pray as you hyzer into the basket.

Other Thoughts:

I think this is a great addition to the Houston area and hopefully the HFDS will try and run some clinics for the kids and church members and see if we can get them hooked.

I have this course as a 3.8....so it rounds up to a 4. (would have chosen 3.75 is it was an option.

Christmas Round 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 25, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice design using typical boggy Houston terrain.

Good mix of short tight shots and big open shots.

Well placed markers pointing you to the next tee box.

Cons:

Some maps of each hole at the tee box would be helpful for people new to the course. I played alone on the first few holes and had to walk a few and back track so I knew which shot to throw (hole 2 is a good example of this)

For RHBH throwers, it seems very difficult to end up anywhere but the brush on the right or the pig farm smelling drainage on the left.

Natural tees are in pretty good shape now but could easily get trenched out with regular play.

Other Thoughts:

With some minor tweaks, this course will be in my favorites list. Thank you very much for putting in a nice 18 holer in NW Houston!

UPDATE: I see a lot of the problems I mentioned have been addressed. I can't wait to play there again the next time I'm in Houston.

Located just east of 249 on Spring Cypress Road, Windwood is in an ideal location for disc golfers starved for a course since the privatization of Oak Meadows. But luckily location isn't the only thing this course has going for it. Situated on an excellent piece of property behind Windwood Presbyterian church this course is the product of a dream and tons of hard work from some pretty devoted individuals. I honestly can't say I've been around a course that has gotten so much positive attention so quickly. If that's all the good I had to say about this course, it may just be enough for you to go play it, but wait there's more.

This course has teeth and in a good way. It is balanced with lefties and righties in mind. There are tunnel shots like 10 and challenging bombs like 11. There are water hazards and up/downs through trees. There is utilized elevation here people!! Something almost never seen on Houston courses. When I first laid my eyes on 7 I had to shake Scott's hand (course co-designer) and thank him for finally giving me a cage on a cliff. The variety of shots on this course are quite good and some of the earlier problems (repeating holes) have been rectified.

As far as course infrastructure goes, it has improved tremendously. The cages are good, in great condition (I think they are DGA Mach 2's). The teepads are now almost completely concrete with 17 being the only one not finished yet (this hole is having a pond put on in it so the tee position is yet to be finalized). The teesigns are wood posts at the foot of the teepads and I love there positioning. I have heard too many horror stories of guys tripping and hitting wood posts on drives so their placement is appreciated.

Cons:

As far as I know there are no alternate hole configurations and with this land they could conceivably have quite a few. Bring your Deep Woods Off, Off smoker and a Mosquito net on days after rain as this course becomes a swarm on warm wet days.

Other Thoughts:

A lot of people thought the day Oak Meadows closed to the public, that disc golf would be dead in Cypress forever. Well not anymore, this fantastic labor of love has breathed new life into this starved area of town. Doug, Scott and Windwood Church itself need to be commended for this great new course. This place has come a long way in a short time and is looking tremendous. If you live in the area (meaning the entire Houston area) you owe it to yourself to play this course it's that good.

Nicely Done! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 7, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

as stated before, this course had a variety of different shots. the baskets are tucked away and allow for tough but not too difficult shots. each basket is marked with neon orange tape making it easier to find. the use of the trees, retention pond, and creek worked out very well. the property is quite large and the course is spread out nicely and never compact.

Cons:

there were MILLIONS of mosquitos out there, plenty of spiders, and even a few snakes. keep an eye out and wear some bug spray!! unfortunatly i didnt wear any and it was almost unbearable. keep an eye on the creek along a few holes because it looks like it could eat a disc or two. as of now, the tee boxes are dirt with some stumps in them. someone in my group almost rolled his ankle on one of them when he was driving so watch your footing. also, GET A MAP!!! we had one and it was still tough on a hole or two to find the basket. It will definatly be better next time now that i know where all the holes are.

Other Thoughts:

great job windwood!!! im super excited you guys added this to the community!!

Great course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 1, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has a lot of variety to it. There is elevation, water, left and right turns, woods, open areas, short holes, and long holes. It really has a little of everything to it. The first ten play in a nice wooded section that is very challenging to birdie with bogeys not far away. After that the course opens up a little and lets you air it out.

Cons:

As mentioed the course is just barely finished with some redesigns coming. So there are only bricks to to designate the teeboxes and no course markings. This will change after the course has been finalized. There is also some clearing of the paths that still needs to be done. So I wouldn't so it's cart or stoller friendly at all.

Other Thoughts:

Northwest Houston has been lacking courses for a while. Until this last summer the closest free option was Agnes Moffitt. Now with this 18 coupled with Wortham and Northside some nice courses are popping up. Even if you don't live close, it's worth the drive.
