The Best...Period 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 27, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Everything. The course is challenging and will test all of your shot making skills. The grounds are kept up better than some country club golf courses. Did I mention it's free?

Cons:

You may lose a disc or two in the lake.

Other Thoughts:

This course is the most challenging I've played that is also enjoyable. It's nice to have a long course that doesn't drag you through the wilderness (deep forest). Give it a shot.

USDGC Layout = 5 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 11, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Note: I played Winthrop the day before and after the USDGC, so all the ropes were up, benches and shade structures at every tee-pad, tournament tee-signs, the caddy book, the environment... What more could you want?

Pros:
- This is GOLF. Winthrop Gold (with the ropes up) is the closest thing to "ball golf" you are going to get in DG. Mowed grass, defined fairways, OB, water shots, and perfectly designed holes make it feel as if you're playing a championship PGA course.
- The Ropes! I hate to say it... but without the ropes this course would be regular. They really tighten up what would otherwise be an open course. Holes 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18 had fairways modified by ropes.
- Par 68. I love the Pars set for the course. Perfect use of Par 4's and 5's... and, they're gettable. Every hole on this course is birdie-able (for the advanced player), the way golf should be.

Cons:

- Not too many cons in the USDGC layout. However, playing this course without the ropes up would, to me, be a CON. Navigation might be a bit rougher (especially with two courses sharing a section of land), and the long walks far less forgivable. The experience would be all together different.

Other Thoughts:

- 5 Discs?? Winthrop Gold, in the USDGC layout (with the ropes up), during tournament week, is just one of those DG experiences you have to have. You feel like one of the Players. Every shot requires focus. Five foot tap-ins are knee-knockers... the championship tournament atmosphere and pressure of knowing this is the only time you'll get to play this exact course... it's exciting - 5 discs worth.
- 358 Day Reality? Without the ropes and week of USDGC hoopla, this course would probably be a 4. However, Winthrop would be an EPIC day of disc golf any day of the year. I'm coming back asap!
- My Score: +1 (with 2 triples and 7 birdies)

A Disc Golf Staple 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 4, 2007 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A true test of physical ability and mental stamina. When the ropes are up take some off and get in between them. Throwing as hard as possible will not mean your killin' it.

Cons:

None

Other Thoughts:

It is no wonder that this is home to the USDGC. The people that make this course and event happen are bringing Disc Golf to the next level.

Solid Gold 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 10, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-The home of the USDGCs
-Every hole offers a new challenge
-Every year part of the course is tweaked to challenge golfers
-So many famous holes(hole 5, 888, clowns mouth, 17, on and on)
-Course will challenge every shot in your bag, you may learn a new shot
-Home of the Yellow Rope

Cons:

-Home of the Yellow Rope

Other Thoughts:

Home of the United States Disc Golf Championships, there are few courses that compare to Winthrop Gold and no tournament that compares to the USDGC. Every aspect of the course and tournament are meticulously planned out.

Oh My God!!! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 7, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Long, challenging, well-maintained. Especially tough with the OB ropes are up. It constantly challenges you to throw different shots under pressure. The course is designed to test the pros, so bring your A-game. There is a mix of shots required. Beautiful clubhouse, plenty of parking. It's on a college campus, so it feels very safe.

Cons:

Some of the holes are gimmicky-tough; 4 and 16 in particular. Don't play this course if you are a novice or beginner. Some holes are unplayable if you can't poke a drive 300ft.

Other Thoughts:

Long, tough. It's a hike just to finish the entire 18. It is mentally and physically challenging. Very little shade while playing and the heat can be blistering in the summe. I like the layout because it calls for course mangement at the highest level. You don't beat this course, you survive it.

Beautiful Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 2, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Perfectly Manicured fairways and gorgeous surroundings make this one of the best courses youll ever play. It seems every hole offers something at this course, from huge elevated shots, and open air distance throws to tight fairways and unforgiving OB lines (especially when ropes are up). This course has several "Epic holes" that will have you anxious to play again and again.

Cons:

The course can be a little tricky to navigate the first time.

Other Thoughts:

This is an absolute must play for anyone that can find the oppurtunity. It's easy to see why this course is host to the USDGC and the sports best players.

Gold Course is the Gold Standard 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 1, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

In 13 years, this is my favorite course I have ever played. This 9800 ft par 68 world class course is located at Winthrop University and is the permanent home of the USDCG. Many holes play around a beautiful lake with a huge fountain including my favorite, #5, which is a 1053 ft, par 5 which concludes with a throw over the lake to a grass peninsula. Awesome! The shot variety is incredible requiring the most skillful mix of both power and accuracy. The gorgeous grass fairways are meticulously maintained. Under par is a world class round as the SSA for the 2007 USDGC was approximately 69. This course is not for beginners and it has the potential to beat down even the best, most experienced disc golfers. Rounds here can tend to be very humbling but also very rewarding.

Cons:

The gold course wasn't set up year round in the past but this year it is in place now and is supposed to stay up during the entire year. There is plenty of yellow OB rope but that is intentional and part of what makes the course so challenging. There are few, if any, flaws with this course.

Other Thoughts:

This is, by far, the most demanding course I have ever played both physically and mentally. If you are up for an extemely challenging, world class setup in an extremely beautiful setting, than this course is truly a must play. You'll be glad you did.
