Space Jam 6 – The Laker Flop 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 19, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.375 Rating) A crammed together 6 holer with a couple tough shots.
- BASIC AMENITIES - The list of pros on the Woodland course is very limited. But for what is here, the one nice thing is the basic amenities, and it's among the leading reasons of why I'm scoring this a 1.5 instead of a 1.0. Nice sized concrete pads for the long tees and standing concrete pads for the shorts. The baskets I believe were Chainstars and they caught well. There are also nice tee signs, which I'll touch on more later in the review.
- RECREATIONAL CHALLENGING - It felt like a lower Rec challenge from the back tee layout, which is surprising for a 6 hole course. Actually, a couple of holes like (2) and (5) felt like Intermediate level holes with a substantial disc loss factor. Unfortunately, in the design quest to produce challenging holes, flaws were introduced.
- SIGNAGE AND NAVIGATION - Very nice tees signs are present at the back pads. They have all the info one would need including a distance reading for the short pad. This makes navigation much easier despite no course map. For those needing to find tee (1) to get started, it's located on the far west end of the parking lot.
- QUICK PLAY - 25 minutes for a quick solo that has navigational sense. The course is also less than 5 minutes from the highway exit. Great for baggers to add a notch.

Cons:

Too much stuff in too little space.
- SPACING - This six hole 1,600 foot layout is jammed into a small 4 acre area that has a lot of other things going on in it and it also has two ponds in that footprint. A volleyball court occupies the line on hole (2). Basket (3) had a soccer goal net directly behind it. There was a seating area and large inflatable object adjacent to hole (6). Four holes have walking paths in play. Only hole (1) was somewhat issue free.
- 6 BASKETS - The highest i've ever scored a 6 basket course was a high 1.5. I think I would have preferred to see 9 holes at upper Novice level over 6 at mid Rec level.
- GATORS - There are signs posted warning of snakes and gators. oh joy.
- HOLE VARIETY - Great for a sixer, but subpar compared to the average course. all par 3s, flat and few trees. The possibilities were definitely limited due to the available land.
- BEAUTY - I went with 20 percentile. The property is mostly maintained, but there are manmade features in view and play basically the whole time.

Other Thoughts:

Of the five courses in Bradenton as of this review, I have this one at 4th. Ahead of Peace Community Park and behind Heritage Harbour. In a vacuum, I think the hole quality here is way better than Heritage Harbour, but unfortunately there are a slew of spacing concerns that cancel out many of the positives. For locals and those that are attending the community center, it's worth checking out. Obviously worth hitting for baggers too, due to the quickness and ease of access. For those in the Tampa Bay Area, Sarasota area and beyond, it's not worth your time. The new top dog around here worth visiting is Tom Bennett DGC.

OK Church Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 13, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Six holes featuring nice baskets and decent-sized concrete tees (blue). Nice informative tee signs (from the blue tees) and next tee navigation aids under the baskets. The course is scenic featuring a couple of lakes, a conservation area on the perimeter, and even a few minor (for coastal Florida) elevation changes. There are several trees to negotiate on the mostly open-ish holes. The course although new seems to be well maintained. There are a few picnic tables scattered about, and some really nice firepits. The course provides a solid challenge for intermediate-level players.

Cons:

The unmarked red tees are some of the smallest concrete tees that I have ever seen and would be too difficult for children and low-level rec throwers which I'm guessing is the target demographic for these tees. The first couple of holes have dangerous water hazards and man-made obstacles that could easily frustrate folks new to the sport. I appreciate the effort that went into installing the course and thank the people involved, but I believe the course could benefit from a redesign. Either eliminate the red tees or make them larger and easier for new/youth throwers. The course itself could be changed up especially the first couple of holes that might interfere with other activities and make the course more interesting and flow better.

Other Thoughts:

An easy bag if in the area on vacation or passing through, provided school is not in session. It's less than a mile from I-75 and there are multiple food options nearby.
