This course is bad. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 6, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

There are 18 baskets and over 18 concrete tee pads.

You will probably have the course to yourself.

Um, did I mention the 18 baskets..

Cons:

The number one con for this is course is the complete lack of maintenance. A perfect example is hole 18s basket(which can be seen from the parking lot.) The bolt that holds the cage to the pole is missing so the cage is sitting on the ground. Instead of taking a few minutes to go find a bolt the park workers just mow around the basket, I tried to fix it with some zip ties but they will only last a little while.

While on the subject of baskets some of them have been beat half to death, basket 1 for instance.

The "fairways" are way too narrow. There are places where the fairways are only a few feet wide, I mean literally 3-4 feet wide. Add in a super low ceiling on many holes plus branches that have grown across the fairways makes for a miserable disc golf experience.

Many of the long tee pads are hard to find or overgrown. Some of the fairways for the long tees are completely overgrown.

The course flow and navigation are not very good. There are some "next tee" signs but not enough. Plus many of the baskets are blind from the tee so you have to walk to figure out where to throw to. Many of the tee signs are missing, and a lot of the ones left are at the long tee placement.

Poison Ivy everywhere, literally everywhere. If you play here you will end up in it multiple times.

You aren't going to find any discs here because no one is playing this course.

Other Thoughts:

The one thing I keep thinking as I played my two rounds here is that the course doesn't have to suck. I don't know how it played back in 2003 when it first went in but as of right now it's bad. I don't even think it would take that much work to make this into a decent course. Who ever is in charge of this course needs to go take a look at Valley View in New Berlin, WI and try to be more like that, or just hire Terry Miller to come and redesign the course. They could even try to work with the local disc golf clubs to organize some work days.

For a rating I am giving this course a 0.5. I have to rate the course how it was when I played and the course was pretty bad. It's hard to explain just how miserable the disc golf is at this course. If you like having to throw an 80' tee shot to set up for an 80' approach shot then this might be the course for you. I even threw a forehand roller off one of the tees because that was the only shot that had a chance of getting down the fairway because of a large branch that blocked every other shot.

If you are wondering if you should play this course- I would suggest skipping it. There are better courses in the area. If you are a bagger it probably doesn't matter what I say you are still going to play it. To you I say take some pictures of the course map by the parking lot, you will need them to navigate. Also, you really only need a putter and maybe a mid. And bring some alcohol wipes to wash your hands and discs after they go in the poison ivy.

Pros:

This is a very unique course like none I have seen in the around 200 courses I have played. The well manicured grassy fairways are cut through very dense underbrush. These very narrow and twisting fairways do not lend themselves at all to the flight path of a golf disc.

As such, this course is best suited for play with catch discs....lids....superclass discs. I would rate this course highly for the fun-factor of playing it that way. I feel bad that I have to rate this course very low when compared to courses designed for true disc golf.

What I personally like and how this course stacks up:
1) Holes with good risk/reward. Fair, but harsh punishment for bad decisions or execution. == B (The only way to "go for it" on this course is up 'n over - thumbers and tomahawks - into blind landing zones. The risk is being unable to throw out from your lie.....and losing your disc!)
2) Holes that have rewarding birdie opportunities for me. I throw 300' accurately, 360' max. == D (The holes that are lond enough to be a challenge have a shape that is not throwable)
3) More wooded than open - lots of variety of shots required caused by hole shape and topography == C- (less than half the holes require you to do more than throw a putter 150')
4) Natural beauty (Appalachian beauty preferred) and seclusion. == B (Feeling completely secluded in nature is the best feature of this course)
5) Bonus points for multi-shot holes with defined landing zones, good risk/reward and multiple options to play them. == N/A

Other Thoughts:

It's all about feeding the addiction, so I ranked this course subjectively based on my own "personal addiction factor". The grades above tell how well the course will draw me back to itself again and again and again. Since I have played a decent number of courses (125 18-hole, 64 9-hole as of mid 2009), my hope is that players/explorers who have similar addiction tastes will find my ratings list helpful as they choose courses to play and explore.

I fully expect others with different tastes/philosophies to disagree with me....that's the fun of things here. See my profile for my rating philosophy.
