Woodmen Hills Disc Golf Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

My three pros:

- Good tee pads, visible signs and quality baskets at all holes. Teepads are 4'x10' concrete pads. Tee signs are wooden posts with a red sign indicating hole #, distance and par. Note only one distance is indicated on the signs although multiple pin positions are possible. Baskets are still in good condition although basket 17 seems to be in flux and was mounted awkwardly when I played.

- Easy navigation; Hole #1 tee sign is visible from the parking area as well as a big sign marking the parking area for disc golf. From hole #1 the navigation is easy to follow until hole #9 after which a next tee arrow points players to cross the road on which they parked. After quickly finding hole #10 on the other side of the road navigation is again quite easy until hole #16 which has a longer walk to hole 17. Almost all baskets are visible from the tee. The front and back 9 play in separate loops that bring you back to the parking area.

- Hole variation is pretty distinct between the shorter front 9 and much longer back 9. The first 8 holes are remarkably short with several right around 200', some of the holes bring a the nearby wetlands area or a lonely tree into play but several are wide open. Hole #9 is marked at par 4 & only 340' and plays significantly harder than the first 8 holes with OB on the left and right sides of the fairway the full length of the hole. The back 9 plays around 300-400' on most holes and generally plays much harder than the front 9, although I only recall the 450' hole 15 as the only par 4 of the back nine. The course is pretty open so most holes will be challenging in their proximity to OB and length.

Cons:

My three cons:

-Front 8 holes are dinkers and too easy to match with the back 10 holes. A second set of long tees on these holes would solve this issue. Most holes are very open and dont bring the nearby woods and wetlands into play very much.

- Walking paths come into play on all holes of the front 9 and several holes on the back 9. Not many folks were out walking while I was playing but if there were more bikers & walkers it could really slow things down. It appears hole 14 teepad was moved recently such that the drive doesnt have to be thrown across the path so I presume the path was coming into play.

- The big sign at the start looks like it would have a map but instead none is to be found. It even has a bunch of course custom score cards at the big sign, but these also have no maps on them, Luckily navigation is pretty easy without a map. The tees are pretty raised from the surrounding ground making it tough to run up from off the tee pad.

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice new course that I was happy to find and play. Despite the short start holes, I would say this course is worth a stop if in the area. The shorter front holes played very quickly - especially with an ace on 222' hole 7. The front 9 holes play near a pleasant swampy wetlands area and the back nine play in a slightly more wooded part of the greenway. Overall the course is a fun play and has some good holes sprinkled throughout. With the OB wetlands and sidewalks considered the short holes at least make you think twice. The course was initially installed as just the front 9 in 2020 and it seems the back nine were added in 2021 which could explain the vast difference between the design of the front and back loops.
