Birthday Trip 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 26, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Signage was acceptable
-Liked having multiple pins for short and long setup.
-Nothing super hard or unreasonable.

Cons:

-Difficult to find hole 1 if you drive up to what appears to be the gate of the park.
-Tee pads feel short.
-No indication of which goals are in play.

Other Thoughts:

I will admit, it has been a minute since I played this course back in March.

Overall, the course made a good impression, not great, but good. I did not find anything super difficult about the layout. It would say it was tough in places, but fair.

I agree with a previous reviewer. You do need to be able to hit your lines. Distance is no where near as important. I can respect the course for that reason.

While the signature hole is clearly the well built goal shot off a long drive on 11, There is still nothing here that should draw an out of the way trip. Especially with other top tier courses within a decent distance.

Plenty of Woods & Rough. Not So Much Leisure.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 22, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Woodruff Leisure Center is a fun, challenging course. The course offers a whole lot more woods and rough and not as much leisure.
- The WLC is an excellent, out-of-the-way course. This is not your typical small-town course...aka a poorly designed layout. This could easily be found in a larger metro area with the support of a larger disc golf club. Think a comparable layout to Reedy Creek in Charlotte, or a poor man's Pipeline in Spartanburg.
- A classic wooded layout with just enough (more) open layouts to keep you from going crazy. Here's the irony. #11 is one of two mainly open holes but it offers one of the most nerve-wracking tee shots. On this downhill throw, if your disc starts sailing, you will end up in the woods and might be scrambling to salvage bogey.
- There's an excellent use of elevation from tight, downhill throw-it-on-a-rope shots (#4 & 9), to uphillers that let you make an aggressive run at the basket (hello #5).
- Doglegs, doglegs, and more doglegs. Wow. It doesn't seem like there's a straight shot the entire course. Ok, I know there are a couple - #9 & 12 - just come prepared to be able to be hooking throws left and right.
- Long and short tee pads. Course is just a little more forgiving from the shorts if for no other reason then you're getting a more favorable angle. The long tees are ONLY 5051 feet, an average 280 per hole. With the twists and turns of most layouts, heavy tree coverage, and narrow fairways, the course plays much longer.
- The rocks are a nice change of pace on #18. I also enjoyed the crisscrossing of the creek on #17, one of the few wooded holes that provide enough space to craft multiple types of shots.
- Tee signs are solid. They're a tremendous help with so many blind tee shots.

Cons:

The short answer is I wouldn't change much if anything. I think this is a perfect compliment to the Upstate disc golf scene. That said....
- Signage could be better in a couple of spots. There were random paths that didn't lead to the next holes. They were just there. In these spots, as well as some of the longer transitions, throw up a couple next tee signs.
- The course isn't meant to appeal to everyone. Players with mediocre mid-range games are going to STRUGGLE. If you can't hit your lines, you'll be hitting trees instead. That said, you could always have a little more variety in the design. The only two open holes are consecutive layouts - #10 & 11. Otherwise, you're in the woods the rest of round.
- In terms of hole design, I wish #18 was a tougher closing hole. It's a slight downhill, 221-footer. It's one of the easiest three or four holes on the course. Throw in the simple par 3 factor on #17, and you get to catch your breath, and be aggressive to close the round.
- Watch your footing. Lots of roots and small stumps in the ground. Also, a couple of hills have tricky footing especially when wet. #5 was the worst offender.
- Not a course issue, but worth noting, nonetheless. The course is close to nothing. It's less than 10 minutes off I-26. The exit off the interstate only has one old gas station. The day I played and stopped there, the bathroom wasn't functioning because the septic tank hadn't been emptied. It also threw in a fee for credit cards. I couldn't wash up after the round and my overpriced candy bar was even more expensive with the surcharge.

Other Thoughts:

Woodruff Leisure is fantastic for what it is. I only needed driver on #10. The rest of the round was sorting through my mid-rangers.
- Course has gotten proper credit with its ratings on here. That said, I have a feeling it won't get near the amount of play it deserves due to its isolated locale. That may help preserve its quality with a reduction in foot traffic and erosion.
- Picking the best hole on the course, my two nominees are #4 and 11. #4 is the best of the tight(ish) downhill layouts, compared to #9, 16, & 18. At 279 feet, a solid mid-range throw is required to carve a path around the trees. I had scramble for my par but enjoyed it nonetheless. As for #11, I described it above. You can't relax because it's an open tee shot or you're in trouble.
- Lots of credit to the course designers for their minimalist approach to creating an excellent design. They let nature be the obstacle rather than trying to do too much or gimmick it up. For a new course, it had an old-school, well-established feel to it. I wish more course designers followed the less-is-more approach.
- You could see a large scoring variance here between your best and worst days. On a day I'm on, I could see myself having a lot of birdie putts and tons of easy pars. On a bad day, it's going to be one hit tree after the next, and a lot of 4s and possibly 5s on the scorecard.
- This is a well-deserved 3.5 in my book. It's missing some oomph to be considered in the 4.0 category. This is close to a must play in my book. Combine it with Pipeline and you'll have an outstanding day of wooded courses.

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 2, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is really a fun course, I really have enjoyed playing here.
There quite a range of hole types with most of them being medium length in wooded area with a few open drive opportunities.

There is good use of elevation as well throughout the course.

The course itself is also somewhat pleasant to play for the isolation and nice wooded layout. It is a nice walk through the woods with some wild life and a small creek.

Cons:

One of the main cons is that it there is still some trash throughout the course that looks like its been there for years. and some new trash as well. It is a shame that people would just through their trash in the woods while playing.

Another minor con is that there is a lot of trees and some incredibly narrow lanes to throw through. It is really difficult to not hit a few trees on this course unless you can do some really really straight drives.

Technical and fun! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 8, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Lots of wooded holes with elevation, technicality, and nice pin locations. Good mix of short and long.
Two longer open holes, plus a few semi-open drives as well.
Signage is adequate.

Cons:

Not a lot. Could use some trash cans mid-course and needs to be cleaned up. There is broken glass off the first couple of fairways.

Other Thoughts:

One of my absolute favorites.

Great Technical Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 14, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-The tee pads, baskets, and tee signs are all in great shape on this new course.

- They have two nice port-a-potties near basket 9, but because of the layout it is easy to run to the bathroom at holes 1, 9, and 18 as they all start or end at the parking lot.

- The course plays around and over a small creek, so it adds a small challenge. The creek is small enough though that you should not lose a disc in it, so don't be afraid to throw over it.

- Fairways are nice and open, but since the course is new the rough is rough. Really just encourages to make sure you hit your lines.

Cons:

- There are only 2 wide open holes to really let it rip (10 and 11) so this will be a down side for long throwers.

- There are one or two holes where it might be a little hard to find the next tee, but if you follow the worn path it should be easier.

- Beware when walking on a few holes as there's a lot of broken glass on holes 2-4. Before there was a course people would use this to dump their trash, so there are still some pieces everywhere.

Other Thoughts:

Great short course that will make you work and refine your technical game. This would be a great course to learn on as it is shot enough a newbie can reach some of the holes for par, but technical enough to really get some skills.

Great new course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 14, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tee pads are well defined. Mix of concrete pads and gravel pads with plastic mesh.

Interesting mix of holes even when you are in the holes. Nothing that makes it a boring repeat.

Most baskets have directions to next hole which helps.

Great course for practicing you technical game.

Cons:

If I had not had someone who had played before, a few holes would have been tricky to navigate.

Power throwers will not like this course as there are really only two holes where one can let it rip.

Other Thoughts:

Played two round today while passing through. I've been playing a little over a year and have a 175' throw. This course is a great workout for the technical side of the game. I didn't find any problems with tight trees because it just requires better control. Even on #12 which is supper tight, I was able to Par and Birdie the hole.

I will definitely be back because the variety and challenges. It was also very nice to hear they have a league here and a number of other players were out enjoying the course today.

The meaning of deuce or die. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 16, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Glad to be the first person to review a course finally! It's definitely a unique new challenge to the Spartanburg area. The hole lengths may say that it's pretty simple but the fairways may say otherwise.

-Brand new course. But consists of nice tee-signs and concrete tee-pads. The front nine and the back nine both end in circles so if you only want to play nine (don't do that) you'll end close to the parking lot and where you started.

-There are interesting assets throughout the course. One hole has a slightly elevated basket and some play along a little creek. Elevation comes here and there, and there are a few open holes. #11 is a great downhill tee-shot from the short pad that may seem a little similar to hole 14 at Tyger River. But there is extra challenge since thick woods on both sides play as bigger obstacles.

-The fairways are definitely interesting. Some may still be incomplete but every hole can be reached. This is why I call it a deuce or die course. Every hole can definitely be birdied but a tree could cost more than one stroke. #14 stands out to me. It's a VERY tricky shorter hole that seemed like a carbon copy of hole 9 at Clover Park. It gently fades left so you'll need to throw your disc that you consider "slightly overstable" if you are a dominant RHBH thrower.

-Starts off unique with a fun hole 1 with the short pad in the woods that offers many different options with different consequences and the long pad off a small hill; and ends well with a fun ace run hole 18 that's perched on a small hill right before you walk out of the woods.

-Love the temporary change in pace after #9. Hole 10 is a wide open bomb that plays as either a challenging par 3 or a par 4 with a potential eagle opportunity since the fairway gently fades to the right. #11 is tough! The short pad offers a nice picturesque view from the top of the 20' hill. The long pad is actually down the hill and a good way left of the short pad. It's a very scary par 3. It requires a very gentle left fade. Then hole 12 changes everything.

#12 is the shortest hole on the course, but possibly the scariest. It is an intimidating gauntlet with a low ceiling. Could definitely be aced, but just about any player is destined to hit a tree. I liked this hole.

Cons:

-Still very new so it has its issues. There are some trees that should be cut down, but they are mostly on the back nine. Particularly on #16. It's a very, very tough hole. The fairway isn't quite fully formed. #17 has some bad trees as well. There isn't quite enough space to perfectly hit one of the two gaps since it is a split fairway.

-#7 plays extremely close to a private property fence. I don't know electric fences from circuit wires but the fence can very well be barbed wire. Don't cross it to retrieve a disc because it can cross over with a bad kick.

-The walking trail plays completely along #10's fairway. Great hole, but joggers will hate disc golf once they see this hole. I think you'll love this hole though. It's a fun one!

-Some confusion here and there. After hole 7, the first basket you'll see is hole 13's. And you'll also see hole 16 after playing hole 8 and I don't think you'll see hole 9 before that. Just be patient.

-Not enough trash cans.

Other Thoughts:

Bare with me. I apologize. I don't really know how to give a great layout of the course without describing the holes. So I'll just give some facts.

-Course is pretty hilly in places. Not like Pipeline, and not as hilly as Tyger River or Shoally Creek either. Still, not considerably flat.

-Current standout holes would be 9, 11, 12, and 17. Hole 4 was a close favorite of mine. Right now, there are just too many trees toward the front of the tee pad. Gap needs to widen. Since there aren't any pictures (and my school email won't send pics to my social email), I won't describe them but you will remember those holes.

-You are either going to love hole 16 or you are going to hate it; due to the state that it is in right now. I hate it at the moment but I think I'll love it in the long term if the fairway gets clearer.

-From the long pads, it reminds me of my home course Bradley Center. The long pads to me are significantly different than the short pads except for hole 10. It may also remind you of Boyd Hill if you have played there.
