Give the 'dotte a shot 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 30, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Really well kept course, set in a large park with a lot of other stuff to do

Large poured concrete teepads for every hole.

Well mowed when I went with distinct fairways and rough and a few 'greens' around the pins

Clean (not like some other KC area parks), well signed with multiple pin placements for most holes and a bench by every tee. Also, there's a couple of big restroom areas, where you can get water.

Not crowded at all. Only saw a couple other groups the times that I've been, all in the late afternoon after work.

Pretty scenic... although most of the course plays pretty wide open, there was a nice use of elevation and trees that influenced shot selection on some holes.

Starts and finishes with a couple of nice tunnels. Overall, well designed and good use of the large amount of space and old trees available in the park.

Good mix of challenging and fairly straightforward holes and risk/reward factor on several.

Cons:

Most holes are fairly straightforward... long drive, layup, putt. But a few require a well placed upshot or fairway drive. You need all shots, though. Hyzer and anhyzer if you want to score well. Or you can usually take a straight line if you're a newer player or don't have all the shots down yet.

Most holes are quite long, which I like, but not everybody does. Only one sub 300' hole. Most are 400-500'. Couple over 700'.

1/2 of the holes are wide open or just require you to hit a big gap off the tee before you're wide open, but the tunnels and playing along the treelines are nice and a lot of baskets have multiple pins and lines to the hole.

Bring a map. It's not obvious where the next tee is a lot of the times, or 2 tees are visible from the pin.

You have to play across the park road several times, and the course plays back on itself a couple of times, but not too bad.

Depending on where you live, it can be kinda far. It's not real close to any of the other courses in the area but the park is right off of I-70 and easy to find.

Other Thoughts:

I've really enjoyed this course the few times that I've played it. It's mostly wide open, but you need a well placed shot, not just distance to score well. Decent mix of hole lengths, but all par 3 and 4's. The park is really nice and not crowded at all. It'd be a great place for a beginner even more experienced players that want to work on their game. Not too challenging or long to intimidate, but certainly enough to keep it interesting. This course is a really good complement to some of the other great courses that we have in the KC area. It's a bit out of the way, but if you're out by the Legends or Racetrack/Casino is definitely worth a look.

A long bomber's paradise 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 27, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is set in a park near the speedway with gently rolling hills and sparsely populated with trees. The tee pads and long and wide, and the tee signs are the same type seen elsewhere on KC courses (I think this style is very good and pretty helpful). Most holes have multiple pin positions, which is always a plus with me.

Navigation here was so so. Many of the baskets have a helpful arrow inscribed in a brick in the ground pointing the way to the next tee, but not all do. I brought up the map on this site on my phone, and that got me where I needed to go. A couple times the course loops back on itself.

My favorite hole was 14, a downhill hole approaching a pond. The pin was set on the other side, so you had to decide how hard you could throw without risking going in the lake (it's about 375 or 400 feet away, so you're probably not getting wet without a big arm). And then the approach across the lake, which is not a tough shot, but the water gets in your head. Fun hole.

Hole 5 was also a nice shot onto a mound, and the various positions looked good.

The elevation changes made for some variety.

It is right off of I-70 and is easy to get to.

Cons:

See the note on hole 16 above. That sort of decision making is what I love about a course...and it was really lacking on most of the holes. For the most part, you are chucking your disc as far as you can, and there aren't a lot of decisions because there aren't that many trees or other obstacles.

I'm not a huge fan of really long holes in general. This course had two 700+ foot holes. I guess if you have this kind of space, you may as well.

The grass was pretty long when I played. However, it was in late March, and spring started really early this year, so I'm guessing the course just hasn't been mowed yet because who the hell mows in March? So I won't hold that against anyone.

In general, there aren't many holes you haven't seen on other courses.

The course is very close to I-70, so you can hear traffic throughout the course.

Other Thoughts:

As a rec player who can't consistently throw over 300 feet, this just isn't my kind of course, but it might be right for you. Here's the thing about Kansas City: unless you want a mountain course or something set in a lush jungle, they have EVERY kind of course. So if one doesn't fit your needs, try the next one down the road. We'd all be so lucky to have a variety of courses like this city.

Pros:

Teepads-long and wide
Baskets-upgraded mach 3 i think catch well
TeeSigns-Good and informative
Benches-everyhole
Trashcans-A few probably a con
Location-right off I-70
This course was a lot of fun, i have some distance when i throw but with trees and some sharp elevation and wind playing on to the green was tough. I imagine be as open as this course is lots of wind so it makes for an excellent factor. yes a lot of these holes can be long and even the short placements are 350+ but there a lot of golf shots playing the fairway and figuring out the greens. Hole 1, 2 and 18 epic beautiful tree-lined fairways

Cons:

Not many trashcans. Made for those with durable arms. Several holes slight elevation but wide open with trees.

Other Thoughts:

It was real windy when i played and forced to make a lot of smart shots but that is golf so i loved it.

Pros:

-huge course
-benches on every tee
-good chance to "air" it out
-some holes are very fun (4,7,9)
-Some tunnel shots through trees are fun
-not a busy course

Cons:

-if it is remotely windy outside, just turn around and go play somewhere else
-some holes are just literally throwing the disc straight on flat ground 500 feet
-not too many elevation changes

Other Thoughts:

Be ready to walk.. This is a long course

This would be an ideal course for a big pdga tourney because there would be a lot of space for spectators and you would get to see the pros really throw.

probably a 4.0 course an a non-windy day

another way I can describe this course is it's sort of like a cemetery minus the tombstones

Wyco is made for disc golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 15, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful course! The trees seem as though they were planted for disc golf. The wide sweeping views, the natural tree tunnels, and well maintained fairways are perfect to play. Excellent signage, easy parking, and rarely any lines. Besides the distance, the hardest challenge is navigating the ever changing wind conditions that change from teepad to basket due to natural wooded bluffs. This course was designed for flying plastic.

Cons:

Relatively flat with limited challenges for experienced players. Limited shade on hot summer days.

Other Thoughts:

This is my favorite course to teach friends and family how to play DG. Simple layout, beautiful park, and really encourages you to "just throw".

WAY too Open 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 30, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very well maintained
Awesome signage at each tee
Great concrete tee pads

A great layout that mixes lengths hole to hole, however it is LONG so be prepared for the hike! As long as you know what you are in for - it's a good course.

They have some great pin locations that make the approach on most of the holes interesting which is quite frankly the best part of the course layout in my opinion. A couple of holes had the baskets tucked in a nice semi circular tree allee and others at the edge of some drop offs (14 comes to mind at the edge of the water).

Course layout takes advantage of mild elevation changes and flows VERY well!

Favorite Holes - 14 & 18

Cons:

A bit too long for my liking. Holes over 600 feet only wear out the arm.....I prefer the 3-500 foot holes of which there were some great ones here!

The only other con I have is that the course is so wide open that it lacks punishment for errant shots. There are numerous angles to play it safe on every hole, so in my opinion it suffers by not making things a bit more technical, but they have used what they have and have still done a great job!

Need more trash cans on the course - they are only located at the shelters.

Least favorite holes - 12 & 13

Other Thoughts:

I would have prefererred more technical shots and/or obstacles, but that being said with the course being so long it is a blessing that it is so wide open.

Bathrooms at shelter adjacent ot basket #1/3 and #12/16

With so many great courses in the KC area, I would recommend Prairie Center in Olathe or the Rosedale Upper Course in KCMO if you are coming from out of state.

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 26, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

A very well maintained course. The flow of the course layout was excellent. Multiple pin locations which are frequently changed. (So I was told from local players) Elevation changes made for some challenging drives. Tee pads had signs that were well made, benches at every pad and trash cans at every few pads. Utilization of the environment in the design seemed like it was meant for a DG course. It is kind of on the long side, but I enjoy being outdoors on a course throwing plastic. Had a great time here. And there are a lot of good courses in the area.

Cons:

Not any in my way of thinking. But, if you are looking for a short course. This is not it.

Other Thoughts:

It could be a very challenging round if the "Winds of Kansas" are a blowin' I'm a Kansan and I don't mind it at all. But that's me.
A definite play if you're in the area.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 25, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is an excellent course, especially for big arms. There is a practice basket near the parking lot which is always a bonus for me. There are nice tee signs and concrete pads at every hole. Alternate pin placements provide very different lines in most cases. Not much elevation change, but the gradual slopes play well on some of the holes. You have a nice variety of shots available here including water/ tunnels/ bombs/ some shorter semi technical stuff.... Unlike a lot of the courses I play, unless you have some kind of super-cannon you are forced to put more planning into your next shot before you tee off on many holes which I really enjoy.
Not all too overwhelming, but still a nice reality check after playing other courses littered with ace runs and easy birdies.

Cons:

Looking back, I used to get really frustrated with this course when I was new to the game. The holes are too long if you don't have a decent drive, and you need some balance of control/distance or you really won't enjoy it... (not really a con for me) but if you don't enjoy the exercise part of the game, this course is a pretty long walk.
Kansas can get windy and this park is no exception.

Other Thoughts:

On a calm, nice day this is one of my all time favorites... I wouldn't recommend taking the family out for a round here or any first timers unless they are serious troopers, but it is great for a nice long solo round or a round with some closely matched players. I would love to play a tournament out here, the longer holes open up a different kind of play that I don't really get to see a lot of.

Pros:

This is a great place to work on distance.
This is also a great place to work on wind driving.
This course is never too crowded, so your round will flow pretty well.

Cons:

For me it was a bit too repetitive.
It is always good to be able to throw your driver well, but I wish there were some shorter and more technical holes to compliment the long open holes.

Other Thoughts:

Has some good entertainment areas nearby and some good food (Arthur Bryant's). For someone that loves to throw long, this is a great course. For other's like me, I would prefer a more technical layout.

Wyco... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 4, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is located in a slightly hill area of a large park called Wyondotte County Park. (or Wyco as some people call it) Most holes had at least a slight hill on them. Only a few flat holes. Lots of trees, but not quite a wooded course. Most of the holes had a straight line of trees defining the fairway, but there weren't very many obstacles IN the fairway. Large concrete tees which helps with the long holes. Tee signs were pretty good, but some of the pin positions weren't listed. Benches at ever tee, but usually they weren't in the shade. Lots of fun holes (some memorable holes were 4,5,14.) If 5 is on the short pin, you have to throw onto a big mound of dirt about 250ft. ahead of you. Lots of long holes. If you don't have a big arm you're not going to enjoy this course.

Cons:

The grass was really long when I was there. Lots of bugs everywhere. The holes were a little long for me, but I can't throw very far. There were about 4 holes over 600 ft. which can get very repetitive. If the pin is on the short positions, it can be a long walk to the next tee. The "O.B." (seemed more like a mando) on hole 13 wasn't marked at all and I had no idea if I was O.B. or not. It gets very hot here during the summer. Make sure to bring plenty of water.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this is a nice course. It seemed a little long for my weak arm, but most people would enjoy it. My favorite holes were 1, 2, and 18, which each had a line of trees on both sides of you which gave you the feel of a tunnel shot.

Charlie Brown's Pitcher's Mound 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 24, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a great course. Some of these pin placements were lots of fun. The ground was still wet enough, I was fortunate enough to throw a tombstone drive on #5 next to the basket that sits on a big Charlie Brown's Pitcher's Mound. (Sorry, I put some personal round comments in here, but it was a real relief to see that thing stick.) ;) Seriously though the pin locations really made some of these holes fun to throw at. Besides that, this course has some moderate elevation, variety of hole lengths, lightly wooded, some interesting hole layouts, a few OB/Mandos areas, a few risk/reward greens, and great use of the entire park. Most of the holes are wide open. The park looked well maintained. The tee pads were excellent. There seems to be just one obstacle on most of the holes. It was a nice way to keep it interesting and yet simple. This park could be a challenge on a windy day, but it was a delight to play. There is a bathroom by first hole.

Cons:

They do need tee signs with better footage on them. When I played the footage on the water hole #14 was way off, because they did not list the short pin placement, even though the long placements (over the water)were listed. There were very few trash cans on the course even though the course was quite clean. Some of the fairways were almost too wide as others have mentioned. The long number 13 can be about as long as you want it with this fact. ;)

Other Thoughts:

More obstacles would have been nice, but not always necessary. The Fun Factor for me was decent. It wasn't always the drive that I was enjoying. Many times the approach to the basket was the ticket. I definitively enjoyed playing here and will do it again when I come through the KC area.

As Good as it is Long 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 15, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a long and well-kept course that can really test your driving skills, both in distance and sometimes in accuracy. It's a large, hilly park with lots of trees scattered throughout and also a wooded creek. The course takes advantage of these things to provide a really good course with varying degrees of difficulty. There are some great layouts, and there are also alternate hole locations that are different enough to altar some of the layouts quite a bit. This helps maintain a fresh feel to the course. The trees provide some tricky shots, some of which favor backhand throws while others favor sidearm throws. Some holes are real narrow while others are more wide open, giving you an opportunity to launch your disc as far as you can on your opening drive. Also, the signs and benches at each tee pad are really nice and helpful.

Cons:

It sometimes is kind of hard figuring out where to go to get to the next hole, including the first hole. This park is huge and has multiple parking lots, and it's not obvious where to go to start playing this course (it's next to the tennis courts, so look for those). There are a few holes that seem too wide open and could benefit from having a few more trees to help make them more challenging. Also, some people might not like how long this course is; it has a lot of long holes.

Other Thoughts:

This might be a daunting course for someone with a weak arm, but overall it's a great course that can challenge a lot of players.

All day disc golf adventure 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Great course with tunnel shots, distance shots and elevation changes.
Rarely are there a ton of people there so you can play on through. But when there are people there, they are always friendly
Will challenge your patience on a few holes and will make you want to learn the roller.
Well maintained by the KC flying disc club
Trash cans on every 3 or so holes so it is kept pretty clean
Also a few regulars who change baskets as they play as well as pick up trash.
Baskets are moved often to keep you on your toes.
tennis courts, skate park and playground right around area so can be an all day adventure. They also have a junior golf course on site, as well as agricultural hall of fame if that floats your boat.

Cons:

not a con for me, but length could be a con for the beginning golfer.
A little too wide open, maybe throw in a tree here and there. But having it being wide open, you still have to throw it far

Other Thoughts:

Like I said nice variety
Holes 1 and 2 you have to keep your disc low and straight..or just roll it
#3 has slight elevation changes and tress that make for a tricky hole.
#4 is a tough anhyzer shot. oh just nice RHBH and then you have to shoot threw a small clearing up hill.
#5 is set on top of a hill, so it is farther than what it seems.
#6 starts the leash free dog zone and goes back down hill with only one tree and elevation in the way
#7 has tricky elevation and trees and only about two shots you can throw it,but they when you do throw it there there are low trees, so be mindful.
#8 is probably the easiest hole. You have to shoot it threw a small gap and it is less than 300 ft away.
#9 also has you shooting it through a gap like #8 but the gap is further away and once you pass it there are trees, but nothing to worry about
#10 has a line of trees on the right side, so it will have you questioning whether to shot around the trees or to shoot it sidearm as if you try and throw it RHBH it will curve down a hill..not big hill but big enough to mess up the hole.
#11..get out the big guns..There is one tree, but it is not in the way. the holeis set up quite far and off the the right..sometimes before a sprout of trees sometimes after. so either grip and rip or throw a mean sidearm..depending on placement.Because you can have a decent drive, but if it is at the far placement then you must throw it 400+ or be faced with difficult decision.
#12 is flat but many trees cause you to think before you throw, Like #10 if you try and throw it straight and you miss, you will go down a hill an OB unless you land on grass.
#13 is a beast of a hole..close to 700 or 800ft depending on placement. But they have added chalked fairway lines so you cant just throw it out there. Which makes it even harder.
#14 is downhill and has a water hazard, there are also trees placed "just" at the right spot, so chose your shot wisely
#15 shoots back up the hill that 14 shot down..so it makes the 330ft placement play farther than what it is. there are also trees and some "seemingly" low since you are playing up hill.
#16 plays down hill but then the hole is elevated and there are only a few trees about halfway through the hole. I think hole is 450+ But throw nice and straight between them and it will work out fine.
#17 can either be a fairly easy drive, or if the basket is on one of the further spots can challenge a few. A few elevation changes with trees places it great locations that will make you think..
#18 is a nice tunnel shot either straight ahead or anhyzer..good ending to the course and you are very very close to hole one again

As someone has mentioned, when it seems like it is getting too hard..they throw in an easy hole.
Love the design
2 bathrooms, one at the beginning by the tennis court and one about half way though the course.I think after hole #13

Great Course to Let 'Er Rip 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

I absolutely loved this course. Trees look like they were planted with a disc course in mind. Great flow of wide open shots working left and right, and a few holes that will make you think a little bit. No terrible trouble to be found, but most holes require a well-placed drive and an accurate up-shot. Several holes with tunnel shots, wide enough and tall enough to play quite fair, yet remain challenging. Beautiful park, the course was well maintained and flowed quite nicely. Finding holes is no problem, with markers at most baskets, and very detailed signs at each teepad. Multiple pin placements for nearly every hole can provide some good variety

Cons:

If you can dodge trees, and have a strong arm, you'll rarely run into trouble. Not much of a punishment to miss the fairway here.

Other Thoughts:

One of the best courses in the KC area, in my opinion. Slight elevation changes are used well to provide an additional challenge, and the treelines demand strong, accurate teeshots for scoring possibilities.

Quiet "little?" course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 14, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Long course with nice concrete tees. Far enough out of the city for less traffic but the park is well maintained. Course laid out to take advantage of the few elevation changes in the park. Every hole had multiple pin placements. Just when you think the course is too difficult the designer through in an easy hole or two. Hole 13 is a 600ft flat wide open course but the field is marked with chalk for OB which takes a boring hole and adds a little challenge. Water comes into play on 15 with one pin placement only 20 ft from the edge of the pond.

Cons:

While there are trees on almost every hole, they are sparse enough to not make a difference.

Other Thoughts:

Several of the holes play through a double row of mature trees, wide enough to not be a significant issue but makes for a dramatic presentation, which adds to the outing. Also the course has light enough traffic the grass is in good shape and even after a rain the course was hardly muddy.
